Back in January of 2024, I have written out all of these things I wanted to focus on. Here is the link to the original post where I first set these intentions, and here is a screenshot that I completed today:

2024 intentions list, assessed in at the end of the year

Some green, some red, some purple (means half and half, comme si comme ça)

Mid July, I reassessed the chart, saw that many goals where just… I don’t know, far-fetched and unrealistic. One coffee a day? Fun thing per month for myself? MLK day of service?… It was all good intentions and all but I didn’t need to do one fun thing for myself. If I want an ice cream, I will just go get it, it seems silly to have it on a yearly list. MLK day of service has been on my yearly list for many years, I’ve never done it. Here is the list when I reworked it mid year:

Mid July reassessment

I narrowed the list down but still was not helpful. Some critical demerits are:

Work category. ALL of those things listed I already do regularly, so it wasn’t so much of a goal list, more of a reminder list, I guess?..

In “self”, I did not do a good job maintaining the self-care practice that I set out for myself. My meditation, journaling and exercise were average.

In “family”, the kids got most of our time. While we do have quality time with T after the kids go to bed, we tend to be lazy about finding sitters and getting out of the house, just the two of us. Monthly dates are in need of improvement. That’s the update on the demerits.

2024 gold stars/pats on the back:

  1. Email boundaries! This goal was not on the list (should have been) but I have held my email boundaries firmly from September (school year beginning) till present day. I plan on NOT checking email after contractual time (3PM) ever again.
  2. I got three pairs of glasses! After existing in contact lenses for 12 hours a day for years, I got new glasses that I love and wear. Thanks Warby Parker.
  3. Travels. Paris in the spring, Italy in the summer. Also, camping and a road trip to Dutch County, PA. Plus an NYC trip for a professional conference and an NYC trip with L this past December.
  4. Yoga since June of 2024. Consistent and regular. On good weeks, I attend 3-4 times, on bad, busy weeks, once or twice.
  5. In case of death folder and a living will, finalized.
  6. Many live theater performances. Very happy with the fact that I attended quite a few, both alone, with T, with my friend H, and with kids. Many were plays as well as dance and drumming performances.
  7. Increased my retirement contribution to 13% of total salary.
  8. My blog. I feel accomplished with my blog. I am not a daily writer unless it’s a writing challenge but still I’m happy I keep writing! It’s a definite hobby.

Did you have things you accomplished that were not on the list? Did you add them in?

I think you did great on your goals. That is a nice list of gold stars. I would question whether you need a category for work. I don’t make goals for work because there is already a goal-setting and review process at work so I don’t need to add to that or manage it outside of work. And I feel like work is already taking over so much of my life – I don’t need to spend more time on it than I already do. You did a ton of big trips! I’m so in awe of your ability to travel with your kids internationally. I think it would be very hard with Taco’s volatile personality… oof. But some day we will take more interesting trips.

I hope I can see you in 2025. I have 3 trips to NJ, the first being in February!

I think you did a great job, and sometimes you need things on there that are easy or obvious so that you can check them off. I am not above doing that, at least! I did not really make a goal list last year, but of course I wanted to declutter, sell my house and do other life goals. However, I just kept them in my head! Happy New Year and I hope that 2025 is as productive as 2024 was!

I think you did manage a good part of your goals and it was good to reassess mid year and make reasonable adjustments. We all start out with grand intentions but then find life interferes a bit in our plans. You had much more green than I did. I did a quick assessment and found I didn’t even hit 25% of my goals for 2024. So I am working on more realistic goals for 2025 and see how I fare. Congratulations. I think you did great.

You had such a hard year at times and yet here you are doing so well on all the goals and adding some new ones half way through. I think you can be really proud of yourself.

    Happy New Year.

I’m curious about the MIL day of service. What would that mean for you? What would it look like if it were easier? (borrowed from someone on Elisabeth’s comments I think, but I love it and am adapting it.)

For me, this would look like trying to fit in some kind of gifting or volunteer activity. My daughter is an adult, and I work from home, so often I can sneak a bit of volunteer time into a lunch hour. For almost 11 years, I delivered meals weekly to home bound seniors via Meals on Wheels. When my daughter was young, however, it might mean volunteering to chaperone on a school field trip. And if my work schedule would not accommodate that, it might mean donating $ to a local food bank, which could even be done online. My point is, the idea of giving of yourself on MLK’s birthday is lovely. But there are opportunities every day of the year to give of yourself, and the way that you do it can change over the years. So maybe this year you give a little money if you can manage it, and when the kids are older you might take them to a food bank or soup kitchen or help plant trees for a city project or whatever. And when they don’t take so much of your time anymore, you can decide what that giving means to you. I recently started donating about an hour a week to helping with a kitten rescue. I find it very rewarding and important to my well being, but I did not have the time for this when my daughter was young and I worked in an office.

I said MIL day of service, but obviously I meant MLK. Also, NO CHECKING YOUR WORK EMAIL OUTSIDE OF WORK HOURS???? I bow down, that is #goals. I need to incorporate more of this into my life.

Zero email after work hours. And no weekends. It’s been difficult at first, like the fist week or so, because of my own people-pleasing hangups but now I know there is absolutely nothing-NOTHING- that would need to be addressed after work hours or on a weekend. Teaching is just not that kind of profession.
