Let’s start with feelings. 😵‍💫 I am anxious, I am restless, I am insecure. Also, I am energized and feeling some anticipation. All those feelings come from my upcoming trip, to Paris, with the kids. Let’s unpack.

😵‍💫 What am I afraid of? I honestly don’t even know. Issues? Say, an interrupted trip? Or, sick kids. Of, sick me. Or, some kind of crime? More specifically, I think I am feeling uncomfortable and anxious because it’s TRAVEL. Any kind of travel brings feelings of unease, no matter the destination.

😵‍💫 How can I feel better? I can prepare, of course. I can read up on Paris (example: TripAdvisor forums, etc). But what really makes me let go of the feelings of anxiety- is getting on that plane. There is no way back once you are at the airport, or even better, butt-in-the-seat.

Logistics

🧸Money – will use an ATM at Charles de Gaulle airport to get some cash since Charles Schwab doesn’t charge any foreign transaction fees or ATM fees. Transport to airbnb – RER train to Chatellet and Metro. We rode the metro in Copenhagen and both kids loved it.

🧸Carry-ons only. Not sure if I will pack my “hiking” backpack or whether I will bring my duffel bag + every day backpack…. A backpack gives you BOTH HANDS FREE (important on escalators, subway, etc). A duffel bag is smaller but hangs on your shoulder and that equals pain. I do not what to purchase another bag.

🧸 Note to self- buy some snacks for the plane, i. e. pistachios, granola bars, chocolate covered nuts…

Activities

💐 L is officially signed up for piano! Trial lesson but hope she likes it. R is only in gymnastics and that’s it. T-ball is available through our town but ages 5 and up, so he has to wait.

🍊Mindful eating meditation with my students! They loved it. I sliced up an orange, distributed it to the students, and read off a script. After, we debriefed, and they reported they really liked it!

🧘 Tomorrow is an SEL day at our school! SEL stands for social-emotional learning. I prepared activities such as tapping, mindful eating and a mindful discussion.

To-dos

Not a lot of to-do items! One major one, but that will take a while. I am in process of creating a “in case of death” folder. Here is what I’m including in it:

  • Will (in process of updating R’s info in our will)
  • Living trust (not sure what it is, need advice)
  • Power of attorney
  • Life insurance policy. T has two, I have one through the state of NJ. As long as I am employed and contributing to our teacher pension, I am covered. Coverage is 3.5 times my most current salary.
  • Birth certificates
  • Marriage license
  • Bank and credit card accounts
  • Loan documents: mortgage, student loans for T and I
  • Car titles
  • Property deed(s)
  • Account and device passwords (gmail? I don’t even know what they are…)

Anyway, it’s a work in progress. I’ll be done by summer.

It’s such a lot of work being an adult!

I completely agree about the best way to get over travel nerves is getting on the plane. I feel like until we board I’m in this weird tither of not REALLY being able to prepare, but feeling like I need to be planning/researching/packing full time? I find it mentally challenging and anxiety-producing too.

I’m so excited for you and the trip to Paris! I hope the kids adore the experience and you make some sweet memories.

Mindful eating scripts. That’s so smart. I should look one up and do it with my kids. I bet they’d really like it!

Hmm, I would opt for whatever gives you your hands free. Traveling on the metro with luggage and 2 little kids… I would definitely want two hands. I am still in a Paris Facebook group from when we were planning our (cancelled) Paris trips due to covid, and I have seen post after post lamenting just horrible issues with pickpockets on the metro right now there. Plus you’ll probably need a hand on each kid in a busy metro station. So, if you are going to take the metro with all your stuff too, I’d make sure to be hands free! Not to add to your anxiety, but I kinda feel like a lady with a bunch of stuff alone with 2 little kids could potentially be a target for pickpockets (since moms are always distracted in crowds with kids! lol!). So that would be my advice I think- whatever is most secure and hands free. (Personally, in that situation (alone with very young kids + luggage) I’d probably just pay extra to get a taxi/uber directly to the Airbnb, and then use the metro the rest of the time for touring around when you don’t have all your belongings. (I am sure you will be fine either way though!) You are so brave and so adventurous! I can’t wait until we make our Paris trip happen…. we had it fully planned TWICE and both had to cancel due to pandemic. Then we were planning to go this June until we realized the Olympics are there this summer, and it’s going to be insane in Paris probably all summer, higher prices, huge crowds, etc. So we scratched that idea too!

Thank you so much, Kae! I think I will cough up $$ for the taxi to airbnb. You are so right about the luggage and the pickpockets.

Oh and I am sorry to hear about pandemic impacting your plans. I wanted to go last year but that’s when Paris had demonstrations re: retirement age reform. So we went to Denmark instead. Oh and yeah- this summer is going to be crazy.

I was there in 2022 and also heard about the pickpockets on the metro preying on people with kids, or people with luggage. We decided to take a taxi (queue in line to get a real taxi, there are apparently fraudsters out there) to avoid that, which took a lot of worry away. I also wore a cross body purse with little clasps that locked it, so no one could pickpocket me on the metro. I will say that my preparation made me feel pretty safe, and I never saw anyone that looked fishy or anything. i also tried to get on the first car of the metro, less crowded. We had such a good time, I want to go back as soon as I can (which will not be this year, or probably next either…)

I am team backpack 100%; it keeps your hands free, and is especially helpful if you have to run, or are on cobblestones, which are common in Europe. Re trepidation, that is so normal. Even if you have all of your $hit together, you will always feel (or I always do) that you are going to forget something. Do you have your passports and your ATM card? Yes? You are good! Everything else can be handled if you forget it/lose it etc.

Re Death File! Feel free to email me; I can talk to you about all kinds of things (Trusts, passwords etc.) and am happy to answer any questions. I also wrote a post about some of this a while back and you can find it here. https://travelspot06.blogspot.com/2023/04/my-last-to-do-list-trusts-other.html But seriously, you can shoot me an email (or call) if you have any questions.

I hope you have a wonderful time in Paris! I think taking a taxi to your Airbnb makes sense and then going forward you can use the metro which is super easy to navigate. You are a street smart, well traveled woman – you will do great. There were scammers when I was there years ago but being confident and not someone who can be tricked into stupid shit goes a long way. Like back then the common scam was for someone to act like they had picked up a ring that they ‘thought’ you had dropped and then they try to sell it to you. When strangers came up to me I just said ‘no merci’ very firmly and I had no issues luckily!

I always, ALWAYS get anxious before trips. It’s just my MO, and I’ve learned to accept that I don’t get to have that GOOD anticipation from travel – it’s always bad anxiety. But once I’m on the plane – I get excited! And I know you will have that, too. All you can do is PREPARE as much as possible and then live in the moment when you’re there with the kids. And that’s what you’re doing. There is some great advice already in these comments. You’ve got this! ❤

You are such a seasoned traveller I’m sure everything will be great. I think hands free is a good idea since you are travelling with two children and would want to keep hold of them. The Paris Metro is great. No need to check the timetables because the trains run so frequently. Crowded at times, so hence why free hands will be good.

I’m kind of ignoring all the travel-related questions because, well, I think I’m just as bad as you if not worse. 🙂
BUT – I would strongly recommend that your folder become a “fire-proof lockbox/safe” or “safe deposit box”. Those are the most important papers for your family’s life, and you do not want anything to happen to them. Maybe provide an outline in a folder/email to important people in your life, but I would definitely keep the documents secured. And (hopefully) safe from fire/flood/etc. 🙂
