In lieu of my Friday Five I am processing the month of May and saying hello to June.

May 2023

May ended up being quite busy, in spite of my thoughts at the beginning of the month that it will not be. I was wrong but only a little.

In May, I celebrated my birthday, watched L perform in a spring concert, and attended a celebration of life of a dear friend.

I ordered my own doctoral gown to wear at graduation (so I don’t have to use the institutional one).

I started Meru app for online therapy, and while my feelings about it are mixed, it is generally a good meditation/journaling/learning app for my mental health. Meru sends reminders, and the people pleaser in me completes most of the activities. Hey, whatever works.

Garden work was clearing and tilling the soil, weeding, feeding, and, of course, planting. I also trimmed the roses. In late May, after the crap from the trees stopped falling, we hired someone to mulch the flower beds and around the house, and it looks so much nicer. We bought an outdoor couch and chairs to add to our existing outdoor table and chairs. I still want to order outdoor string lights for more ambiance.

New patio set. ‘Scuse my knees.

I booked our campsite and started preparing. So many wonderful tips from you all!

May also brought Teacher Appreciation celebrations both in my own school, and in my kids’ schools. I scrambled to get meaningful Teacher Appreciation gifts for my kids’ teachers so next year that task will go onto April to-do list.

Allergies were in full swing in our household, especially for the little man, the big man, and me. My daughter was just fine. May had a long Memorial Day weekend, and it was great to have those days to rest or to explore. I missed my mom on Mother’s day and wrote about her difficult childhood this very cathartic post.

“In Case of Death” folder was finished and put together, and so was the will. The trust is quite a process so that is still in the works.

Work was very busy – editing final exams, editing study guides, creating qualifying exams for honors classes. I am wrapping up the academic year, putting all the stuff away, and decluttering. It’s fair to say that most of my my overwhelm came from work.

Goodbye May, hello June post from 2023

June

June will be a slower month because my last day is June 14th. I want to continue gardening, and declutter our attic and guest room. It is our anniversary month, and the kids have their moving-up ceremonies.

Fun stuff to look forward to: more reading, camping, beach, library, pool, barbecues. And my sister-friend’s birthday ❤️

How will June look for you? Any events, big or small? What are you most looking forward to in June?

Our kids don’t finish school until the last day of June (literally) but the schedule is a bit all over the place with some days off, special events at school, etc. I don’t have a clear plan for June yet. I think I’m still a bit stunned that May is over?!

You had a very busy month but I hope you felt a deep sense of satisfaction when you saw everything written you. You got A LOT done, have paved the way for some big adventures ahead (e.g. camping), and have a nice plan for June!

I did feel a sense of accomplishment! I am the first one to get down on myself so any positive affirmation helps my mental health 😉

Paul is done with school the same day as you so it’s a sort of normal month. He starts the summer kids program the Thursday after school ends so we have a 3 day gap but one of those days is Juneteenth which Phil and I both have off. But taco has school so I will probably do something special with Paul like maybe go to the pool which is far easier to do with just 1 kid versus 2! I have one trip to NYC but that’s it for travel which is a nice change of pace for me.

Love your outdoor furniture!! We need a set like that for our paved patio. Where did you get it?

I haven’t been up to date in a timely manner so this quick recap was wonderful to catch up. Thank you. Looks like your may was indeed very busy but also fun. I am amazed how quickly you work through the tough paperwork like will and such. I am struggling to do this for probably 10 years now. I started but was so overwhelmed with deciding about my organs…

Also very belated happy birthday to you. Sorry I missed it.

Have a wonderful June. You have lined up some fun activities.

Oh thank you so much Tobia! Wow, you have to answer questions about organs? We don’t. They do ask that question when you get your drivers license.

I’ve never heard of the Meru app. I have questions. Is it a free app? Do you talk to a therapist as well, or is it all on your own?

Your yard furniture looks great! I am considering getting something new, but I’m leaning more toward waiting until someone gives away a set on Buy Nothing. My brother in law just got a great set for free that way.

Hi Julie! The Meru app is a program that goes through my insurance – Cigna. You talk to a live therapist once per month, and you do exercises like meditation and journaling. Also, they send you a biofeedback device that measures your hrt to get in resonance. I actually really like the biofeedback activities. In total, I pay $15 per month as it’s mostly covered by Cigna. The program is 3 months long, I’m on week five.

You had a busy month! I think May is usually busy for me, as there are a lot of days and I think in this case there were even five weekends, or at least five Fridays! I love your patio and the furniture and the nice lawn! I could sit there for hours with my book. I did away with my lawn in order to save water and it is convenient but it is not as nice to lay around in a pile of lavender, that is for sure!

I DID sit there for a while one evening and then the mosquitoes got me lol I need to get that lemoncello candle. May definitely felt LONG. I think June will be easier. I can’t wait to hear about your adventures.

I used to have a tough time getting to your blog when they were ads (it’s easy peasy now). Anyway, forgive me if I missed a post where you talk about your monthly vision chart. I *love* the freeform nature of it and would love to know more.

Both your months look so full–and meaningful. Happy June!

Oh thanks, Maya! Maybe- just maybe- when I had a basic, free, version, the ads were rampant. Now I upgraded to *still* cheap but paid version, happy to hear the ads went away!

I used to make custom notepads for my kids’ teachers for the end of school, but I have to remember to order them way in advance or they don’t get here in time, and this year I definitely missed the boat on that one. I should definitely set a reminder the first week of May to order them if I want to do it again.

June looks to be pretty busy because we’ll be travelling the week after school ends, plus swim team season has started. The 12 year old didn’t want to do swim team last year, but wanted to do it this year. I had forgotten how consuming swim team could be – we are at the pool 4 days a week most weeks, five days if there is a meet. But I have lots of plans with friends coming up, and that always rejuvenates me.

I hope this last bit of your school year goes well!

Hi Diane! A bit of a stupid question, but how do you do things with friends? Do you all agree on a specific date? Or, do you set the date and then see who is available? I want to set some things with friends! 😉

I definitely see friends a lot more when I’m not working because I have more time off, so I can meet people for lunch which is easy and I don’t have to ask the Husband to watch the kids. With my mom’s group, I often throw out two or three days/times when I’m available and see who comes – sometimes it’s four, sometimes it’s just one. I used to feel bad that I’d often offer a weekday lunch and a lot of the people in my mom’s group work, but as one friend pointed out, other people can also initiate plans too, and a perk of planning is to make sure the time works for *me*. Other than that, I do try to plan one or two one on one friend dates a month and that’s much easier, just to text a friend and see when our calendars match up. But, yeah, I find I do have to initiate 90% of the time.
I would LOVE to take a ladies’ weekend trip or a regular monthly thing or something more than just random one offs when my schedule allows, but my schedule is so inconsistent it’s hard to have standing dates. During COVID I had a standing weekly date with a friend and that was great because we never wondered if we were going to hang out, we just knew we would.

That patio furniture looks so comfy! I hope you can spend many a summer day relaxing on it!

The kids are already out for the summer here – I think their last day was May 30th or something.

    Happy June!
