Chili cookout at work. We had about 15 different types of chili, all sitting pretty in their crockpots and instant pots. At first I was hesitant to participate, but, then I thought, why the heck not? So I signed up, made chili, and brought it to work this morning. My word of the year is connect, and it was nice to sit down and chat with colleagues who I pretty much never see.

Ear infection. R was crying on Wednesday night saying his ear hurt, and then on Thursday, after picking him up, inconsolable! A trip to our urgent care clinic, some Amoxicillin, he is already feeling better. It is so rough to see your kids in pain. It’s like someone is cutting your chest and squeezing your heart.

The Magic Horse. Started a coming-of-age mystical realism story by Sabine R. Ulibarrí with my honors students. Lyrical, magical, written in prose but reads like a poem or a song.

Went out to dinner with R after his annual physical. He received two vaccines tonight and he was upset, so we went to our local Murphy’s Ale House. He got some chicken fingers, I got a chimichurri steak salad. It was nice to have that uninterrupted time with him. He kept asking about different sport that were playing on those giant televisions they have at Murphy’s. So, yes, I brought my 4 year old to a sport bar. Except there were other kids there, some even younger!

The fog. For the past three days, the world has been wrapped in a dense fog here in New Jersey. While it is not raining, you can still see a very fine mist in the air.

We have had that kind of fog, too. One morning it froze and the side walks were so icy. I am shocked none of us fell.

Sorry to hear about R’s ear infection. Those are so painful! It’s nice when they can tell us what hurts. My boys had so many ear infections as babies so they both ended up with tubes – Paul at 9 months, Taco at 13. They were such a godsend.

We were supposed to go to my parents this weekend but Paul woke up with a fever yesterday. I was hoping he would feel better today but he threw up this morning. I am hoping the rest of us avoid this as I go to LA for work on Monday.

The chili cookout sounds like so much fun! The ear infection does not. I like these Friday 5 posts!

The fog was so pretty. Terrible (and scary!) for driving, but beautiful.
