Took a stroll down memory lane and found our pictures from Iceland! The kids and I went in June of 2022 and it was… something. It was very, very good but there were some hard moments, too. As with anything.

I’m not going to get too wordy so I’ll just give you the gist.

Duration: 1 week

Itinerary: South and West Iceland

Ages at the time of this trip: L was 4.5, R was 2.5 and I was 41 🙄

In a nut shell, we followed a designed itinerary and stopped at dozens of some serious waterfalls, hiked in a variety of natural parks (the whole country is a natural park IMO), climbed into canyons, sat in thermal waters, played in hardened lava formations, descended into volcanic craters (dormant), said hi to Icelandic horses and sheep, and hung out on black pebble beaches. And, of course, playgrounds.

Memorable moments: oh, so many. Being in the same room with actual *hot* lava. Visiting the seismic museum and research center. Looking at a huge glacier. Finding gnomes (toy) in one of the caves. Scenery is everything in Iceland.

Lodging. We stayed in 3 places total: a farm stay, a luxury eco-hotel, and an airport hotel for one night.

Car: a small rental Yaris. Was perfect for us. Car seats: flimsy.

Money: a completely cashless society. Amazing.

Agency: this was my first trip alone with both kids so I booked through a travel agent. Iceland is so safe and family-friendly, I could have booked it alone and saved myself some $$$. Lesson learned for next time.

Is Iceland family- friendly? 1000% People don’t sweat the small stuff, we felt very welcome even with a 2.5 year old. Bathrooms are everywhere, diapers and quality food readily available.

Issues: L got sick right before leaving and I was even thinking of leaving her behind, and just taking R. When I broke the news, she was devastated. I mean, DEVASTATED. So, we got her fever down, and got her on the plane. Upon arrival we found out United lost our luggage so we had to buy $500 worth of clothes and such. Got some Icelandic hats and cute jackets. Travel insurance later reimbursed.

Anyway, here is a smorgasbord of some pictures from Iceland and short captions.

Icelandic horses are everywhere and they are quite friendly
At one of the many parks
R was not impressed by the canyon
“Dinner” at the lodge. We were offered fermented shark, I tried a piece and it was vile.
Under an actual waterfall
R’s sly face 🤣
Turf roof houses
Another gem 💎
Black pebble beach- so cool.
At the very end: Reykjavik

My PI keeps telling me we should vacation in Iceland. This now has me almost convinced. I just need to figure out when.

We had a 7-hour layover in Iceland once and went to the Blue Lagoon and I have been wanting to go back ever since. As much as I dislike the cold and keep dreaming of warm destinations, I CANNOT get Iceland off my mind.

Also, gold stars for taking two young kids on so many trips. I was never brave enough to do that (took a toddler to Denmark for 4 weeks but had my husband along and that was IT until they were both much, much older).

These photos are amazing!!! I have been in the Reykjavík airport but that’s my only glimpse of Iceland. It looks so beautiful. Those pictures of your baby crying made me laugh. Two and a half is quite an age!

THE HORSES! OMG, they are gorgeous. My sister and her family went to Iceland a few years ago (pre-pandemic) and rented a camper and drove around the country. They had an amazing time. I’m glad your daughter was feeling well enough to go, and that you had travel insurance to pay you for the clothes you had to buy. Did you ever get your luggage back?
