“We only buy things we need and only if we can’t go without or repair the ones we have. We don’t waste. We take care of things we own and treat them with respect.” ~ Ludmila (my mom).

Fast forward 35+ years.

It takes me a long time to press that “buy” button. Stuff sits in my cart for a long while and often gets deleted by way of selling out. I never shop in stores. I always shop online. I do browse and think thoughts like “wouldn’t it be nice to have ____.” And I stop there.

T thinks I’m cheap. But I like to think of myself as an under-buyer. With a twist.

I have the money, I don’t have the desire to spend it. Even if it’s something that I technically “need.” For example, I need a winter scarf. The bulkier, the better. I have two gauzy and light summer/fall scarves that I also use as coverups, but I do not have a winter scarf. And I’ve been dragging my feet. I am so indecisive. I know what I like (bulky, plain, no lettering or labels), I know where I can get one (Aritzia, Nordstrom, Ardene) and I just don’t do it. Price? There is also Amazon but… I’d rather give my money to Walmart. Not that they are any better.

What I wrote above doesn’t mean that I have nothing to wear and that I don’t invest in some pieces. Two years ago I bought a Sam Edelman coat in bright red and have been enjoying it ever since. I invested in a few of Becca swimsuits. But they are the only three swimsuits I own. Winter boots? Two pairs from Thursday Boots and one pair of heeled boots from Vince Camuto. Sneakers: 2 pairs. Jeans: 3 pairs. I’m going down the rabbit hole so I’ll stop here. Clearly, I wear my pieces “on repeat.” A lot.

I admit that I do not like the idea of spending money. And I don’t like cheap sh*t either. So I shop rarely and with intent.

How will Christmas look?

T and I decided how much to spend on each other and that is the biggest amount. He knows I either want a gift card for Airbnb or Nordstroms.

Kids will get something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read. In essence, four things each. I will fill their stockings with little chocolates (say hi to Kinder eggs!) and play dough.

R and L’s teachers are getting the same gift (a hand soap set from Bed, Bath and Beyond).

Aftercare teachers will get a big Cheryl’s cookies basket (individually wrapped).

Our mailman is getting a gift card, trash guys- same.

My friends and I we usually don’t give each other gifts but instead get together for dinner instead.

[on the cover: William Morris refrigerator magnets that I splurged on at the Met gift store a year ago]

How about you? Are you a spender or a saver? What will Christmas look like in terms of gifts in your family? What kind of feelings do you associate with shopping?

I am definitely leaning more towards your approach. I don’t like to spend on things. I. try to get a good deal. I wear my things for a long long time. I still have a pullover I bought in 1997 or so… And then there are moments I really spend money. Usually on experiences and travel. Rarely on something for myself. The husband always tells me to get it if I want tit but I answer with but I don’t need it. More often than not I don’t buy.

I love your mom’s quote. We repaired so many things back then when I grew up. Now you just through it out and get a new thing. Unfortunately preparing today is often enough more expensive than buying new. Sigh….

I definitely have become pickier in terms of what I buy for myself, but I am also guilty of impulse buys because sometimes I can’t help myself. I have been sewing more and wearing something I made for myself brings me great joy (at least if it turns out they way I wanted to). Quick question: Are you happy with your Thursday boots? I am trying to find the perfect boot and, so far, had no luck. I tried Blundstones but had to give them to my child since they hurt my feet too much even after the break-in period. It still bugs me to no end because I really like the lok.

I really do like Thursday boots! I just re-soled and re-heeled the black ones and now I like them even more! They are now 5 years old and going strong 🙂

Don’t feel bad. I identify as an under-buyer too (I will buy things that I need but I don’t go out spending money on just random things. Usually, I think about it for at least a couple of weeks before I hit the “buy” button… and even then, sometimes, I just delete stuff out of my cart.). I think it’s called “being smart with your money”. 🙂

Interesting topic. i would say I’m an underbuyer for most of the year (although I do love to go to stores and browse) but I love to go all-out for the holidays. I love having lots of presents under the tree. Granted, a lot of them are things the kids need anyway, like new clothes or shoes. But they’ll get fun stuff too. I probably spend too much and Christmas- oh well.

I buy quality things and take good care of them, but I buy what I need. I also have dozens of scarves, though, so no one would ever call me an underbuyer. LOL.

I lived in Philadelphia for a couple of years in the 90s, and have lived in California for the last 27 years. I have a warm, heavy, dark green scarf from that time that I have NEVER worn here and will likely never wear. Can I send it to you as a holiday gift? I would love for it to have a new home, and if in fact it is NOT what you are looking for, if it is not heavy enough, you can give it away.

I am with you, I dislike spending money when not needed. I am happy to spend money on travel, food, time with friends, but I’m not fond of joke gifts or things that will end up in the landfill next month. This means gift cards often, which are not as fun as opening something, but they are more practical.

I am similar in terms of buyer. Sometimes I will splurge like I bought a pretty expensive work backpack but with how much I travel I felt it was worth the money spent. Phil did not agree. 😉

We are definitely under buyers for our kids, too. They get a lot from extended family at the holidays and birthdays so we feel like we can get away with buying less. Phil and I don’t exchange gifts. We figure we can buy what we want. Gifts are dead last on both of our love languages, though!!

This was a timely post for me as I did a big closet clean out/ clothing inventory etc this weekend. I have such mixed feelings about all of it- sometimes I get the urge to drastically cut back my wardrobe, but it’s really hard for me! I’m very indecisive. I also fear getting rid of things I “might want one day”. Also, about only buying very expensive things…. I kind of go both ways on this, too. Because I do have quite a lot of clothing, even my “cheaper” items just don’t always get worn so much that they get worn out. I also feel like sometimes I find cheap(er) items that last a perfectly long time and I still like a lot! For example, I found a pair of brown ankle boots at Cabela’s of all places, for I think $39.99 last winter. They literally look identical to other pairs I see online that cost $200+ and I get compliments on them all the time! I love them! I wear them all the time and they still look new. So then I feel like it’s not always worth it to me to spend a fortune on everything….

That makes so much sense. I have a $50 “grandma sweater” as I call it and it’s from 2016 🙂

I like the idea of things. But I also like the idea of not having things. I see things that I think my kids will like and I want to buy it for them. But I also hate spending money. I think I go in phases. Some months I barely spend money on superfluous things, and some months I will think, “Why not, if we can afford it?” I’ve also noticed that ironically, I spend more money when I’m not working than when I am working. I think, when I am working, I don’t have the mental energy to think through purchasing decisions, and I do tend to over think purchasing decisions.

I am an over buyer when it comes to some things (mainly books, clothes, and food) and a “use it till it falls apart” kind of person when it comes to lots of other things. I am hoping that this Christmas I can rein in the spending a bit, especially because I have no idea what to get anyone.

I am an under buyer too! I just came back from a three-night stay at the conference, where i travelled with my carry-on and had one outfit for presentation (bought about 8 years ago), one outfit for workout and one swim suit, one pair of shorts and two tops (the conference was in Orlando)! and my PJ. It was so easy to unpack!! Got it done in 5 min!
Since i work from home most of the time, I have five pairs of yoga pants, 5 tops, and couple of cash emir/wool cardigans that I purchased at ThredUP. For my office days, i have three pairs of work pants and maybe about five tops. I do like to wear simple tops with my cardigans, and just add accessories or scarfs. For the conferences/presentations, I have three classical business dresses that I got years ago and a jacket. The plain blue, black and grey dresses just never go out of style, so i have no reason to replace them! Also, based on what i have seen in Orlando last week, the standards of the business casual wary a lot based on where you are presenting. I will just leave it there 🙂
In terms of Christmas, we don’t do gifts to each other, because we both work and can get whatever we want (seriously! ) We just do gifts to our two boys ages 6 and 8. Everyone gets one gift and something fun for the stockings, so it is super simple and stress free for now. I do take advantage of the Christmas sales at Ulta , and usually buy some cologne for the hubby (he works in the office every day), and some perfume and make up for me (mascara and my favorite eye shadows, because i don’t use lipstick and don’t believe in expensive skin care).
The only time when i enjoy shopping is my weekly grocery shopping, ethnic groceries, and seasonal farmers market! I need to confess that i can easily drive 30 extra min to get persimons from the Asian market, for the fun and love of it 🙂

I like your Christmas gift formula for your kids. Brilliant. I do not like to spend money, but I typically look for things on sale – quality, I like name brands. I probably should hesitate more before I hit buy on Amazon.
