Q4 was short and sweet- two months. When Q4 started it was stressful mainly due to before/after care situation, but we made it work. A kind neighbor stepped in for mornings on the weeks when T was traveling, and both kids went into an accredited after care program at R’s preschool. All this shows that I stress wayyyy too much.

While I did feel overwhelmed when T was traveling and we were setting routines, all in all Q4 went well. Aftercare provides me with some breathing room to meaningfully close out the day without rushing from work to daycare as I did last year. In fact, this is the first year that I have some kind of buffer between work and picking the kids up.

Some things that come to mind from Q4:

Back to School processes and adjustments for both kids ✅

Aftercare for both kids ✅

BTS nights for me and the kids ✅

Many hikes in the reservation ✅

Fall decor for the house ✅

Booked Paris for a week with the kids ✅

Cleaner fell through ❌

Paid off Paris tickets ✅

Ripped out the ivy and dead plants from the summer ✅

Decorated the house for Halloween ✅

Hayrides and campfires at the reservation ✅

Hispanic Heritage project at my school ✅

Friend H’s birthday ✅

Transferred 403b to traditional IRA ✅

Made a 3D paper pumpkin for R’s preschool ✅

Gymnastics is going well! ✅

School in general is going well for both L and R ✅

Thinking about a road trip with Rainn in November 🤔

Everyone got their flu shots! ✅

L-tyrosine ❌ had to stop- making me rage- vomit

NJ Sick Day policy was a big win for New Jersey public employees Sick leave bill

Q5 is also short – November and December. Time for reflection and celebration.

Some highlights include getting the Christmas tree after Thanksgiving, a show in November, a ballet in December, L’s 6th birthday, wrapping up the calendar year, and NaBloPoMo in November. The mind map is not very full and I plan on keeping it that way.

How did quintile 4 go for you? And, what do the last two months of 2023 have in stock for you?

Wow you got a lot done! It really showcases it when you lay it all out, doesn’t it? So what exactly is Q5?

So many check marks on your To-Do and Want-To list. You must feel very accomplished. Really cool. The last two month of this year are filled with NaBloPoMo of course and hopefully some craft projects and fun books to read. On the adult and business side of life I will be knee deep into the Christmas season for one of my clients (gifts and stationary) and some household stuff that we keep putting off. Also I need to clean my desk but that is a rather short term to-do or nothing else will get done.

Hey Tobia, sounds wonderful. I love stationary. I have some pebbles in my show that I need to take care of, too. Like sew up my pants and add a button to my fall jacket.

Love that brain map – I think I might do one today for the last 61 days of the year. Wow, time flies.
So many great check marks 🙂

Wow, you accomplished so much in Q4! Very impressive! I cannot believe we are nearly done with 2023. This year went past in a flash. Your brainstorming map is excellent. What a great idea!

Wow, Daria, look how much you have accomplished!!! This is amazing!!! Our Q4 went by way too fast! My goal during Q4 and Q5 was to simplify our time, routines and make things easier 🙂 So lots of commitments were dropped from the list, and we mostly enjoy cozy evenings readings books and playing chess and uno cards. I hope the same routine will continue into November :))

Since someone else asked, I’ll ask too- what is Q5? Is this something everyone else knows about? “Q” seems to apply to quarters, but I’m pretty sure there are 4 quarters in the year… of course math isn’t my strong suit so anything is possible here! : )
Yes, I like the mind mapping. I’ve done it before and it’s great. You’re inspiring me to do my own mind map of “Q5.” Like you, it’ll be about Thanksgiving, Christmas, and all the events that happen in these two months.
Nice job for Q4- you got a lot done!

Hi Jenny! The quintile system is borrowed from Sarah Hart-Unger and it really works of me. It’s smaller chunks so more manageable and I noticed it makes me stop and smell the roses more often versus just burning through my days. Here is an episode where she talks about the quintile system in detail: https://theshubox.com/2021/03/episode-36-planning-in-quarters-or-quintiles.html

Okay thanks! The funny thing is I saw that she mentioned “quintile” on her blog today! The mystery is solved.

I’ve never seen anyone break the year up into quintiles before, interesting. So is each 1/5 of a year, rather than 2 months, or do you just average it out? Clearly we all have questions on this.

I’m excited to read about your trip to Paris, when will that be? Have you been before?

you’ve done a lot! I didn’t have so many tasks to begin with. I’m not good at keeping a tasks list. nov and dec is celebration months and school break which means more travels for the family! I’m super excited for one trip as it’s supposedly to be very idilic and remote. it’s also my birthday and husband’s, so more celebration to come.

Wow, I am super-impressed by your list. You got a lot done. I guess it helps writing things down and then checking things off 🙂
I am looking forward to Q5 – the holiday season is upon us. While stressful sometimes, also a lot of fun.

Hi Daria. Is there anything more satisfying than checkmarks? It looks like you accomplished a lot in a few months. Wow. The yard work stuck out to me. I never set aside time for that. My husband sort of does, but I feel like the rest of the inside of the house and our lives need so much, I can’t spare time for it. It would be satisfying though.

A trip to Paris? Sounds exciting.

I hadn’t heard of anyone breaking the year into quintiles either. It’s an interesting concept. My last two months have been consumed with back to school and getting into a good system. I run a daycare and I just recently filled my last few spots. I only babysit during the school year, so it’s sometimes hard to fill openings once the school year has started. I was also busy urging/helping/proofing my son’s college applications/process. It was exhausting.

Hi Ernie! Thanks for stopping by. My some is only 3, going on 13, but I know that one day I’ll be in your shoes with college applications. I teach high school, I see how stressed the students (and parents) are.

I need to look at this quintile system. I think it might be a fun way to break up 2024 for me! Thanks for linking SHU’s blog post.

You got so much done in Q4 and I hope Q5 is a good one to you as well. I have a lot of fun stuff happening in the last two months of the year and I hope I can just enjoy myself and keep my anxiety at bay.
