Blogs

Saturday morning. Open Feedly after about a week away, see 45+ unread blog posts. Get overwhelmed, close the tab. Remind myself that it’s not homework. Read a few blog posts, marvel at people’s ability to post quality reflections and meaningful responses on a regular basis.

One blog post recommendation – this one from Kelsey of the Girl Next Door podcast and Rising*Shining blog. She created a portfolio of her work. Like, everything she does for work! Writing, editing, house management, kid management, everything! Me: “MUST DO THE SAME!”

Books

Angie Cruz’ novel was amazing. The narrator, Rossmery Almonte, is a national treasure. Patchett’s book – nibbled on a few essays and returned it after a few days. Twyla Tharp’s book is being inhaled by me- an easy read, along the lines of “the Artist’s Way” by J. Cameron. Stephen King audio book is only 4 (!) hours long, can you believe it? He usually churns the books by the pound but this one is brief. Enjoying it very much.

Work

Had a wonderful, productive week with students. Had a conversation with the chosen few along the lines “I love you, and I will help you learn, but I’ll also make sure you will work in my class. I need to see more effort from you.”

Another highlight is that I found a great idea for the Hispanic Heritage Month on Teachers Pay Teachers. I then bought said project ($3.95), manipulated it to fit my students’ needs, tightened it up, and voilà, an amazing and different way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage! Why is this different? Because usually we do people of Hispanic heritage and that’s wonderful but this… 🥰

In essence, students research one Latin American brand/business they randomly select and create an infographic with essential information about their brand. Some of the brands are Bimbo, Marinela, Fabuloso, Suavitel, Chocolina, Cafe Bustelo, Melhar, De La Rosa Mazapán, Goya, P.A.N. and others.

The project also prompted a field trip to a hispanic supermarket with L and R this afternoon to load up on snacks from some of the above brands. Who doesn’t like Gansito? A classic!

September

When I look back at September… I feel good. As projected it didn’t feel super busy. But the month of September passed us by really fast.

I did a good job organizing my classroom and starting the school year strong, in my very own classroom. When T was traveling for work, I was tremendously overwhelmed but did my best to keep my head above water.

I did well on Back-to-School night. I had a chance to meet L and R’s teachers. I took down dead morning glories from our window boxes. I met Lisa! We decorated for Halloween. Both kids are loving gymnastics. Halloween costumes are ordered and started arriving. I booked flights, secured an Airbnb, and insured our spring break trip – to Paris (just the kids and I, T can’t take that week off).

Flu shots. Library visits. A 6 month teeth cleaning and check up for me. A few rainy days, family movies nights. Sleeping Beauty, Elemental, and Hercules. Trivial yet important stuff. And absolutely nothing major to complain about.

Morning glories are… no more

My trick when I get back from being away is to skim my blogroll, maybe pick one or two old ones, read them, comment on them and then mark everything older than 7 days as read. Then I see if I can keep up with what’s left. Sorry people, I can’t go back and read everything, but I will be in the here and now and will comment when I can. It’s not homework, it’s a community and we all get it!!

I think Feedly would overwhelm me as well. Some people post daily, and if I’ve been away from it for too long, it’s just too much. So I will read a couple, and then move on. Of course that means that I miss some really good writing, good stories, etc. But otherwise, as you and Kyria said, it turns into homework, and we don’t want that.

PARIS! I’m so excited for you. I went last September and had a wonderful time. I want to go back.

Oh, wanted to comment that I really liked These Precious Days. I think my favorite essay was the one about her and her friend in Paris. Maybe you and the kids will get tattoos?

I loved These Precious Days and should re-read it! But I’m generally a huge fan of essays.

I get what you mean about Feedly seeming overwhelming. If I get behind, I try to skim all the posts (like seconds each) to make sure I’m not missing anything major that I would feel badly about not knowing…but I definitely comment A LOT less than I used to. I felt obligated to comment on every single post by every single person I read…now I just comment when I feel like I have something I want to say. Which is still a lot, but it feels a lot more “organic” this way.

What a fun project, and great the kids get to enjoy some new/special flavours ❤

I am with J and Kyria on this. I went on a blog hiatus for a couple of weeks and had over 250 unread posts. There was just no way to read and comment on them all. I went to the newest posts and called it a day.
These Precious Days is one of my favourites, and I also loved How Not To Drown In A Glass of Water.

I’m so excited for your trip to Paris. You are going to have the best time!!

I’m glad I got to be part of your month last month! Meeting you was definitely a highlight.

I get behind on blogs, too. The others sentiments here are helpful. It’s not homework and no one is keeping track of who comments on every post (I hope!).

If it makes you feel better, I am always behind on blog reading (although I try to keep up within a week or two) and weekends are usually when I have time to sit down and at least skim blog posts (I am always afraid to miss something major by someone I consider a close blog friend)… but in the end, nobody is keeping track.
