For a while now I’ve been meaning to write about items I have at work to elevate my experience of being at work. I already enjoy my work but that’s not to say that there are difficult days. For example, when I have to teach three classes in a row.

Having these additional comforts makes work better. I primarily work from my own classroom where I design lessons, assess student work, have meetings with colleagues, and work with students who need extra support. So here are some small comforts I have at work.

  • An electric kettle
  • Instant coffee and a variety of tea bags
  • Creamers
  • Plentiful spoons and forks
  • Salt and pepper shakers
  • A mug
  • Granola bars + crackers
  • Instant oatmeal
  • A plastic bowl
  • A sweetener for tea (honey or agave syrup)

Among things unrelated to snacks and tea, these other items live at work and make my life easier. A sweater, a big bottle of hand sanitizer, a hair brush, an extra hair scrunchy, deodorant, floss and a bottle of mouthwash. Lip balm and hand lotion. Medicine for when headaches arise – Ibuprofen. An empty water bottle that I fill every day to stay hydrated. A lovely-scented room spray from Bath and Body works that when I feel like some focus is needed and when the students and I meditate.

It may look like a lot of things but really it makes such a different if I feel like having tea and I don’t have to go into the staff room to boil water and look for a mug.

Just this morning, I simply forgot my bagel back at the house so I whipped up two packets of instant oatmeal with hot water from my kettle.

What do you have at work that helps you enjoy work a bit more?

It’s great that you have all of these things to make life easier and more comfortable. Good planning. I work from home, so I have pretty much everything I need, but when I worked in an office I used to keep cereal or oatmeal, and a sweater. I had a lot of pictures of famous paintings on my cubicle walls, to make things more homey, and I had a little radio so I could listen to music. I need a decent atmosphere I guess.

My favourite way to set the mood for working (from home; basement office):
    – a cup of coffee or my Yeti filled with cold water
    – my planner and favourite pens + highlighters
    – a sweater
    – music (preferably in headphones)

I do similar things. I keep my blazer, heels, scarfs (different warmth), oatmeal, protein powder, tea, coffee, creamer, soy milk, mug, water bottle, hand cream, lipstick, all in my office. I also keep some family pics. It feels homey without being too personal.

I have quite a few things at work, too. I have deodorant, tooth paste and a tooth brush. I also try to have popcorn and Rx bars for when I need a snack. My newest purchase is my huge Stanley stainless steel water mug. I need to bring some photos of the boys in to personalize my space a bit! I had some but brought them home during the pandemic!

The hot water kettle is key for me too.
Good lighting. I’m in a cubicle in a shared office and the overhead lighting isn’t great.
    Pictures of my kids.
A hoodie for when it gets cold.
Snacks – all the snacks. We usually have a mix of sweet and savory snacks.
Lately we have been keeping jigsaw puzzles on the big table in our office. It’s been a great way to take a brain break when we need it.

Yes! I have a lot of these things in my office kit, too. I also have a desk lamp that I bought at Target when I got my very first office that I always move in because it’s usually a lot better than the florescent lighting. I also have a blanket that lives with my office gear because the AC is always too cold when it’s on.

A lamp! So much better, we have fluorescent lighting, too. I avoid it as much as I can- so depressing.

OMG, your list of office goodies is almost identical to mine. Many many years ago when I started my job, I quickly realized that i can’t function without a tea kettle – brewing a cup of tea helps me think about my research. So on my first day of work i went to Target over lunch to get a tea kettle – I have no idea how i made it mid-day without a cup of hot tea on that day :))
Packaged oatmeal, snack foods, hand lotion, lip balm, cardigan, etc. – i can’t work without those items! When i worked in the office every day, i also had a pillow and a sleeping bag, and i did use these two things for a short break under my desk (while i was pregnant). I used to keep them in a box signed “Very important things” – the reality of working in the U.S.!
Reflecting on this post, I think one super important skill might be the ability to know how to elevate/lift up your day, when you are “not feeling it”. The fall is already here in Midwest, and on some gray rainy morning I try to teach my kids on “how can we make today better”? “How can we still go to school and be happy”? So far they provided two answers: screen time over breakfast and chocolate chips :)))

Thank you so much for all the insight! I was debating on bring a yoga mat and a meditation cushion… Heck, if our employers are getting it all out of us, it’s up to us to make ourselves as comfortable as possible! I love you questions to your kids- will use them!

Yes! Making a cup of coffee or tea at work and having snacks/breakfast options on hand helps a lot. I have the same “stash” at my office…. and then a couple of hygiene things and comfort things like you. Good planning!
