We don’t celebrate lots of holidays but we like to celebrate winter and summer solstice. Why? I honestly don’t know – we are not pagan. Nothing fancy whatsoever: for Winter Solstice, we have dinner lit by candles only, and for Summer Solstice we make a fire in the fire pit and roast marshmallows for s’mores. That’s it. I feel like it acknowledges the progress of time nicely.

Summer Solstice 2023- waiting for the fire to start

BOTH kids are home till September 11th. They only are in camp when I will be in Poland for 10 days (T will be working so they need camp).

Don’t want to jinx it but today is going… Okay. I’ll take okay any day. AND, extra pats on the back for me: it is overcast and raining.

In the morning we went to the Great Swamp Nature Reserve for a nice, long hike. It was the best decision ever, and we really lucked out. It only started raining after we were finished hiking (and we did it at a very leisurely pace because, 3 and 5). We stopped regularly, gazed into the swamp, pointed out animals and plants to each other, and had about 300 snacks. The moment we climbed into the car and I clicked my seatbelt, it started drizzling. The moment we pulled into the driveway of our house, it was pouring. They both had yet another snack (omg), and R went down for a nap. L stayed up drawing. Me: writing this blog post.

Later on today… A movie (Rio) and popcorn. Then at 5PM, we have reservations at the Stone House – where we usually go for our anniversary. Today, 11 years married! We are bringing L and R with us because our babysitter was not available. Hopefully, they behave since this place is really nice.

I also celebrate the summer and winter solstices! It’s just a lovely thing to do to think about the Earth and the passage of time and renewal and how far we’ve come and how far we’ve got to go. I appreciate hearing about how other people celebrate them.

That sounds like a fun day! My family usually celebrates the solstice with a campout, but this year I think that it somehow did not get planned. However, it is my brother’s girlfriend’s milestone birthday today so maybe we are just celebrating them all together this year! I hope that you had fun at dinner and that the kids behaved!

I kind of forgot about the solstice! It came and went without me really thinking about it. I kind of hate it because the days get shorter from here but I need to focus on the fact that we will have lots of daylight for a long time!

I am glad you made it back home before it started to pour rain! And I hear you on allll the snacks. That is part of why our park visit last Sunday wasn’t super great. I assumed the donut vendor that was at the farmers market every weekend last year would be there but they are coming every other weekend this year… so the boys were hungry and it just wasn’t pleasant. I should always bring cheerios (my boys’ fave snack).

I hope the kids did well at dinner. Happy 11 years!!!

“Days get shorter” -exactly! So it’s a good reminder for me that still a lot of daylight is left.

I don’t really “celebrate” the solstice, but I am always “aware” when it happens and acknowledge it 🙂 I like that you have a tradition of celebrating it!
