The image above serves as an introduction to our beach season. This weekend we have been to the beach twice: once on Saturday and once on Monday.

Heh, for someone who grew up in a city in Russia, and only has seen the sea once or twice in her life (the Black Sea), I have become quite a beach bum over the past three years.

We do not live or own the house by the beach but in a suburban area of central New Jersey. The beach or, as NJ folks call it, “the shore” is about 50 minutes from us. Since L was three, we have been purchasing a season pass to this one beach area and have been going their 2 or 3 times a week every summer.

My first year I was scared. “How can I bring a three year old and a one year old to the beach? The ocean will swallow them!” Turns out, not true. Yes, I had to keep a close eye on them both, but, thankfully, they are not runners, and they have a healthy sense of danger. That first year, I plopped my behind right at the water’s edge where they’d play. I would not use my phone or read when we were at the beach.

Last year (4.5 and 2.5 year old) – same thing, bought a season pass, and was going with them them regularly to the beach. This year: I am so much more comfortable. They are 5.5 and 3.5 years old. L is only allowed to go into the water ankle deep. R will not go into the water at all. He claims it’s cold- he is right. I wouldn’t go into the water until August.

I feel like the beach has so many benefits for me and the kids. Blue spaces and all. Salt water, fresh air, hot sand, the view of the endless ocean… The kids have more meltdowns at the house than they do at the beach. Heck, I have more meltdowns at the house than I do at the beach.

Benefits for the kids:

  1. An open space to play
  2. Building with sand, seaweed, shells and pebbles
  3. Meeting other kids at the beach and playing with them
  4. Life skills such as being smart in the water and putting on sunscreen as well as packing and unpacking their gear (toys, mainly) at the end of each day.

Benefits for me:

  1. Sunning my pasty Russian body (with spf, of course) thus looking better, thus feeling better.
  2. My brain calming down
  3. Feeling like a kid myself- making cakes from sand and “feeding” them to the kids
  4. A sense of wonder that I usually loose during the school year.

Are there things that I do not like? Of course!!!! Sand gets everywhere, all the possible crevices. The car after the beach season looks like a boat in spite of regular cleanings.

The beach has become our “thing”, something that we all love and do together every summer, just the kids and I. T comes along sometimes but he has to work in the summer so no weekdays.

Anyway, we love it, and I plan on doing this until they both tell me “Mom, I’m going down the shore… With my friends.”

Do you have a “thing” you do with your kids? What are your thoughts on beaches with the kids (or alone)?

I mean, I live in Calgary, which is landlocked. But we have taken many, many beach vacations over the years and I loved them all. I loved how the kids would just be occupied by the sand for hours and hours. I love the waves, I love everything about the beach.

My “thing” I do with the boys is take them to the library. We go nearly every Saturday before gymnastics. They rotate the toys every couple of months and have picture search and find that Paul loves to do. We usually check out a bunch of books, too.

We also go to the beach although our beach is at a lake. We did not go much last summer because Will was not a huge fan but he’s very into sand now so I think we will go more often this summer. There is a beach about a mile walk from us, so we can take the stroller/scoot there. There is no shade at that beach, though, and it’s kind of small so it’s not my favorite. My husband swims at a lake that is a couple of miles from our house so I am hoping that we will go with him for his Saturday morning swim. We did that nearly every weekend during the summer of 2020 when Paul was just over 2 and I was pregnant with Will.

Any weekend with lots of outdoor time is sure to have fewer meltdowns… although that was not really the case this past weekend. Will was IN A MOOD and had lots of meltdowns… no amount of outdoor time seemed to help!

OMG Rainn was SO WINEY yesterday… I was climbing walls… He may have been going through something… Today he seems better.
My husband is from Maine so lots of lakes there – and the kids absolutely love it 🙂 Hope you are having a great week!

I just love a beach. My dog doesn’t like it, though, because she’s a hater of water. I like to be outside with her, so I don’t go very often, but I just love a book, a towel, and the sound of waves crashing. You’re beach looks lovely and I’m glad you’re getting to enjoy it!

I love beaches that’s why we go so many beach vacations. what I like the most is the sound of waves, endless, calming, never boring to me. girls love beaches too as they always have things to build. I like to read, or just close my eyes to hear the sound of waves. I don’t sunbath so I always stay under the umbrella, and only come out when sun goes down.
beach means relaxation for me, fun for the girls, and nap for husband 🙂

MY kids are adults now but when they were younger we went to the beach a lot. I remember my yuongest when he was crawling he would head out into the water, Hubby and I would be watching (from grabbing distance), thinking he’ll stop when a wave comes in … but no. It was hard because he was always fearless and would follow the girls out too deep, so I was glad when he could swim. All three of mine did junior lifesaving every summer, which none of them loved, but we were at my parents house which has a really dangerous surf beach so they needed to handle themselves. Luckily there were two other bay beaches that were safer for kids.

I also find the bay side be safer- not too many waves and more animals and shells.
