These memories are not necessarily easy but they enriched my life in such immense ways so here we are…

1. our trip to Iceland. My first international trip solo with the kids! R was 2, L was 4. A balmy 50 degrees mid June. The sun that just would not set. Fermented shark, never again. The cleanliness, the emptiness and rugged beauty of that country. I felt completely and entirely safe traveling alone with two small kids.

Look how tiny they are!

2. My wedding. I felt so beautiful, so loved, all my friends and family were there, I was the center of attention. The party was small – only 50 people, and it was in a historical hotel, Lambertville, NJ, at the end of June. During the vows, a monarch butterfly landed on my bouquet, probably a sign from T’s father who passed away when T was just fifteen years old.

My dad and I

3. the birth of my daughter. She was the calmest, chillest baby, even when she was only a day old. I was in active labor all day, since morning, when T drove me to the hospital at around 6pm, I was 7mm when we got there. And yet, she stayed put. Finally, she was born at 10:45pm.

T with much less grey hair than he has now 😜

4. the birth of my son. Same hospital, except we had L already so when my water broke at around 1am I had to drive myself to the hospital. I wasn’t in pain so driving wasn’t a problem. I was told “your water broke, and, if you are not experiencing contractions, we need to give you Pitocin.” By 7am I was having contractions all right. I then had to go to the bathroom and, oops, my son was born in the bathroom of the delivery room.

He was 7 lbs 8oz and his head was no bigger than my hand ❤️

5. Fulbright in Chile. In 2017 I received a grant to travel to Chile and do research: the Fulbright Teacher grant. I was living in Chile for five months. Many weeks were spent traveling around Chile. I went as south as Puerto Varas and as north as Atacama. I also had a side trip to Buenos Aires to attend a book fair and explore the city.

I also found out, while in Chile, that I was pregnant with L, my daughter. When I came back five months later I was already showing.

The above five memories are the grand events of my life…

But then there are other, smaller memories that I would like to relive: tasting my first Snickers bar, standing in line to get into the US embassy, taking the oath to become a US citizen, seeing Paris for the first time, seeing Ankor Wat for the first time, seeing Taj Mahal for the first time, spending the night in Rajastani desert, visiting the birth place of the Buddha, first date with my husband. Defending my dissertation. Serving as an interpreter to a couple from Spain who were adopting two Russian kids.

What memories would you like to relive?

This month I am participating in #NaBloPoMo2025. A running list of participants can be found on San’s NaBloPoMo page as well as more information about this lovely initiative on this NaBloPoMo page.

I love that you picked that prompt. It’s something I’ve been thinking about… it’s hard to pick only five memories that you’d like to relive (so I am glad you added some extras!).

You were a stunning bride and you look so happy. I feel like the wedding day is such a blur and went by too fast, so it would be nice to revisit it 🙂
And of course, the arrival of your two kids! I totally get how special that must have been for you!

Iceland is on my bucket list, btw.

This was a hard prompt since I wasn’t sure -there are some small moments I’m like to relive, too. Like sampling beer at Shenandoah valley while the kids played with other kids and an old lady was playing the piano, just because.

Wow. Those are some really incredible memories. What a life you have led! Thank you for sharing them with us. And thanks for the smaller memories too. I like this prompt, maybe I will try to tackle it this week. I can’t believe it’s the last week of NaBloPoMo!

I love this so much! This was one of San’s prompts? i may have to do this one myself!

The birth of both my kids would definitely be on the list. I’m laughing that you had your son in the bathroom fo the delivery room. Yes, the second one is definitely easier, right???

The trip to Iceland sounds incredible. I would never, ever have taken two young kids to Iceland by myself- but you did it and it’s one of your cherished memories. I need to remind myself to “choose the bigger life’ more often.

My friend got married in Lambertville – I bet it was at the same place! She got married in the fall and it was so beautiful!

I would want to relive my wedding for sure. I wouldn’t want to relive my births as they were c sections… it was wonderful meeting the boys but not like a magical moment if that makes sense? Maybe I’d want to relive 3 weeks out when I had a snuggly newborn and wasn’t dealing with abdominal pain (not that a vaginal birth is a walk in the park either!).

I’d want to relive my trips to Paris, too!

Ufff vaginal is bad but I cannot imagine the c-section recovery- I heard it is just unbelievably painful. Interestingly, with Rainn, he was born so fast that they didn’t have time to give me epidural (which i asked for, and the doctor responded with “sure, be right there”) Be right there turned into a 40 minute wait and welp, in the end I didn’t end up needing it. Which means, when they were sewing, i felt everything and I thought I was gonna lose my mind.

What a beautiful wedding day photo.

I had some things go wrong on my wedding day AND both my kids were born via c-section and had quite stressful births. I wish those could be my answers, but they’re not.

    Top memories:

    • The day my husband proposed to me was absolutely perfect. Also, our first kiss felt like literal MAGIC.
    • The boat tour we took along the coast of the Algarve last summer as a family.
    • Christmas 2020. After all the things to do with COVID my parents were able to make it and we had a healthy, cozy Christmas and it was so very special.
    • Going into the woods with my dad when I was a kid to collect fir branches for giant wreaths.
    • Summers at the lake as a kid.

What a beautiful bride! So many core memories here. I love this prompt!

I’m not sure the moments I would want to relive, maybe the times I spent with my grandparents since they’ve now been gone for a long time. ❤

What a fantastic post! I don’t know whether I would want to remember the birth of my kids, maybe that moment of euphoric joy and amazement after the delivery—I did it, and check out this amazing little human being, but there is so much more to that memory and a lot of it I wouldn’t want to revisit.

What a beautiful post. So many wonderful memories. The birth of my two kids would definitely make my list. My second child was also born incredibly fast about 40 minutes after rushing to the hospital

This is a fun post. What a great idea. I love your wedding photo. That picture really captures your joy. Your time in Chile sounds amazing.

I would also choose my wedding. I’d probably also choose the year I studied abroad in Ireland. Maybe a couple of vacations that we’ve taken with all the kids. I’d definitely relive a couple of really relaxing fun times when the kids were really little and we just hung out at the local pool with friends.
