Let’s start with LEMONS. My one and only albeit giant and sour lemon is a feeling of overwhelm that I don’t seem to shake off. Granted the busy week I just had, it’s understandable. This is a long weekend so I am hoping to add some concrete self care to add some margin to my days. I feel like I need to sit down, write some stuff down, clean the house, put away laundry.. Get my head on straight.

FIGs

T and I invested some money into the production of Redwood the musical, and when to the opening night in NYC! Idina Menzel was incredible, the plot was so moving but the overall reviews are mixed. Some critics thought it was too new-agey, some thought it fell flat. Some were not happy with the set. Whatever, I loved it and was moved by both music and lyrics (it does have themes of loss and self-discovery).

The Nederlander Theater, NYC

We also went to the after party since this was Redwood’s opening night. Oh, an afterparty for a Broadway musical in an NYC ballroom was really out of my comfort zone. The fashions were beautiful. I mean, it’s not Academy awards but still the outfits were gorgeous. Tons of evening dresses, cocktail dresses, blouses and skirts or suits, and some awesome make up and statement jewelry. I was/felt very underdressed in my blue sheath. Oh well.

It was a wonderful people-watching opportunity. Made me wanna move to NYC for a bit. On our way back, I go to T “just curious, what do apartments go for in this part of town?” Midtown the 41st, 42 streets… He goes “oh, about 4-5K per month?…” Bah.

The after party

Anywho. The musical, the afterparty, and simply being in NYC were awesome. But I was *fried* the next morning.

Valentine’s Day. Say what you may about Valentine’s day but I enjoy it. I love wearing red, cards, flowers, and chocolates. So what that it’s a fake holiday? Let it be another reason to have some chocolate truffles from Target, and write a card to a loved one. I listed some random things I love about T. Examples: his sense of humor, his legs, his laugh, his hugs, when he cleans the kitchen, when he calls me cute, when he makes dinner, when he opens the window and when he does NOT touch the thermostat and keeps the house cool. Last two are important since I am going through some night sweats this year. The kids got chocolates and cards from us and plushies from my mother-in-law.

She named the bear Pinky while R named his Bluey (his bear is grey)

Spirit week at L’s school was so fun. They had a fun socks day, a sports jersey day, a funny hat day, a crazy hair day. Below is a crazy hair day creation – a collab between L and I.

Skates are back! R is back on skates for 8 weeks. In fact I am typing this while I wait for him to wrap up his lesson. One day I hope he starts hockey.

On tap this weekend:

Yoga, gymnastics, skates, a few play dates, PT for my neck and upper back, and piano. In between all that, I need some space to pick up the house, read, and just veg out.

By the way, watches Heretic yesterday with T after the kids have gone to bed. It was good – a 2024 horror movie with Hugh Grant. Recommend.

How was your week? How do you deal with overwhelm? Musicals, yay or nay?

I love musicals SO much. Really, I just love music. It is extremely rare for a day to go by without me listening to at least some music (but it’s often hours). And Broadway is just such a magical place.

I can relate to the overwhelm. I’ve had my daughter home 13 out of 15 days. Sigh. Between snow days (4 recently) sick days (4), weekends (4 days), and a holiday (1). I am so ready for a return to normal. I am currently locked up in my office (it’s Saturday afternoon) because I JUST NEED TO BE ALONE.

Hi Daria! It’s so cool that you went to the musical and the after party! I’ve never done anything like that. I didn’t know that it was possible to invest in a Broadway show. It sounds like you had a wonderful time. I hope you get a chance to rest this weekend, and I hope the overwhelmed feeling subsides.

Thank you, Michelle! How is not being on social media going? I saw an article the other day, about deleting social media, and thought of you.

Daria, it’s so nice of you to think of me! There were a couple of days at first when I thought I should check Facebook and then realized I didn’t have Facebook anymore – so what was I going to do? Ha! Ha! But now I feel like my mind is less cluttered and I can rest. It’s a relief.

That’s wonderful to hear!! I don’t have FB or any kids of social media either and find that I read more books or write more thoughts down.

That’s awesome that you were able to go to the musical and the after party! That would’ve been out of my comfort zone as well since I don’t have any truly fancy clothes for something like that. But I’m sure there were lots of regular folks like you there as well!

I try to fight being overwhelmed by making sure I carve lots of time for myself to rest. I always lie down in the afternoon on weekends and read or nap. I know you struggle with rest, but I feel like it’s the only way to offset the busyness of life. Phil is the one that does a lot of solo parenting in our house, so I make a point to take the boys out for stretches of time so he has the house to himself. Is that something that T could do for you?

I haven’t really asked him… I feel like I like going out of the house but that adds to the overwhelm…You are right- I do struggle with rest… The anxious nature of mine.

yay theatre! I am kind of obsessed with the idea of the giant tree onstage.

I am SO curious about how you ended up investing in a show! I’d love to hear about those details, if you feel like sharing. I think in the coming years, people wanting to support the arts is going to be so much more important both in the commercial and non-profit realms.

I hope you find pockets to catch your breath this long weekend. When I was looking at the calendar for the month, I saw President’s Day and thought, “Oh yay, what adventures can we have?” But now I just want to have a day to reset so I can feel like I’m not behind. Yet I still do want to so something fun too. I need to figure out that balance between using free time to gather and reset my physical and mental space vs. also taking the time to grow and see new things.

Hey Diane! Our neighbor who is very much involved in the NYC art scene has a group of investors and invited us in. We first invested in Romeo and Juliet (also a Broadway production ) that ran from October 2024 to February 2025. We have not seen any payouts just our money back.
With Redwood, we will probably see some higher returns, although who knows. It will run longer so more opportunities to make money.

I love that you invested in a musical, and thus were able to go to opening night and the after party, that’s amazing! I would have felt out of place as well.

I hope you were able to enjoy your weekend and the feeling of stress has lessened.

You invested in a play? You went to the afterparty? OMG, that is just so, so cool! I bet you looked very elegant in your blue sheath.

And yes, in this life it’s best to take every opportunity to celebrate at whatever level one can…

As always, all your pics are adorable.
