Naomie wrote a post this week how she is in the process of decompressing and I could not relate more to her post. I, too, always have these grand plans for the summer, being a teacher and off in the summer. But then I always, always stress over how not to waste that time. Should I take up a new hobby? Exercise every day? Take a class? Learn new dishes? Make desserts? Volunteer? All of the above? I usually do not do well with a lot of unstructured, free time.

As the kids get older and possibly want to spend less time with me, I will probably end up getting a part time gig in the summer that is not related to education.

Summer planning post from 2023

Our summer looks like this:

~ Camping at Mongaub pond for two nights in June! Slowly getting ready.

~ L is in STEM/nature camp at the reservation for three weeks; I am excited because it’s at the reservation that we go to, and it’s nature- and science-based. I am concerned about ticks, so I’ll make sure to use tick spray and check her skin every evening before bath.

~ R is with me those three weeks. We have a beach pass and will be exploring the playgrounds.

~ Italy trip: two weeks. Amalfi (staying in Menori) and Calabria, with one week in each location. T is coming with us for the first week, then he has to get back for work. I will stay in Calabria with the kids for another week. Nancy, my colleague at the school who teaches Italian, hooked us up with information/accommodation in Capo Vaticano, where she was born.

~ at the end of August is my mom’s weekend away. A brief solo trip. Will probably get an Airbnb somewhere or a hotel room not too far. Heck, even Princeton, which is about an hour away from where we live. This summer I am not visiting my friend in Poland, as I did in 2022 and 2023, maybe next summer.

When I honestly ask myself about this summer, I would like to have a nice balance of activity and rest, routine and spontaneity, togetherness and solo time. I want to continue exploring with my family and exploring who I am, by reading, writing, and getting out of my head, and into my body.

And you?

Looks like you have a fun summer planned. I appreciated the Lazy Genius podcast who mentioned separating summer plans into having to and hope to. It made me realize we have lots of fun planned and most things aren’t have tos.

I love your summer plans, esp. that you have more international travel coming up. I envy all your adventures with your kids (in the best possible way!).

Summer here is going to be summer. Not much changes for me in my daily routine or at my job. That’s how it goes when you’re not in the educational system either yourself or your kids. Haha.

Sounds like a good plan for the summer especially the Italy trip! Summer is not really much different than the rest of the year for us since the boys are in full time care and our jobs don’t change in the summer. But I am kind of glad it’s like that. A summer home with the boys does not sound super appealing if I am completely honest…. I know that sounds terrible, though!! I would need a solid plan for each week to keep us busy and entertained!!

No, I hear you! Sometimes when I am gaping down the hole of uninterrupted summer days, I feel scared that I may not be my best parent when we have so much time on our hands.

Your summer plan sounds great, especially the solo trip. I have a rather busy summer and will only have 3 weeks of break instead of 1.5 months as usual. We will do a vacation trip within Indonesia, and I’ll have a solo business trip to the US. When it’s not too busy, I enjoy those business trips. I hope to read more too as I’ve been so behind due to work load recently.

Your plans sound great! We don’t have any plans this summer, sadly. Though my husband is hoping for some home improvements, which would be pretty good.

Italy! Exciting. I hope you have a great time.

All your trips are so different from each other and with L’s camp and your beach pass with R, it sounds both full and relaxing. I hope it all comes to pass as you envision it.

Super interested in hearing about your Italy trip eventually.
