Mental health. The holidays are over and I find myself not feeling it the second week of January. The grind is real. Where is that fresh January energy??

In the grand scheme of things, all is as well as can be but my mood is low and my physical health is not good. Work is humming along just fine. The kids are in school and both T and I are hacking up our lungs. I may need to get on an inhaler since my cough is not going away.

Nature. Gray skies, clouds, some dirty snow, and spindly, leaf-less trees. I may need to take a hike and look for glimmers.

Connect (my word for 2024). I have been diligent with reaching out in spite of my desire to crawl into a hole and stay there in my bathrobe and my book. Also, on Sunday, I brought my kids to my Russian friend’s house and stayed there for about four hours. Her mom lives with them, and I just love her. Her mom reminds me of my mom so we had a nice long visit. So many good stories!

Travel. I bought our tickets to Italy! Flying into Naples, one week in Amalfi, one week in Calabria. Summer travel was gnawing on me since I was hesitant about… Money, time, accommodation? I was mulling around in my head the best time to go, whether I can handle driving in Italy (the answer is NO), whether to do an airbnb or a hotel. I went ahead and bought the tickets. Now there is no turning back. We are going.

Our family annual photo book (2023) has been designed. Shutterfly did a so-so job so I am in process of putting finishing touches on it and, once unlimited pages offer becomes available, I will purchase it.

Weather. Tonight New Jersey is under the state of emergency due to heavy rain and possible flooding. Our district already called a two hour delay tomorrow. Our basement is not water proof so we will probably see some water down there.

Kids. Many cute moments that I should have written down but I didn’t. L asking me to lie down with her while she took a nap on Saturday. We ended up napping together on her twin bed. R asking me (on his own volition!) to help him look for shapes in his room. R does not like homework (I mean, he is four) so this was a surprise. R creating a game during dinner and being an MC. He would hide an edamame bean in his napkin, have us guess, then give us a “trophy” So stinking cute.

I think going back after the winter break is hard. The days are short. It’s cold. You know you still have half the school year left (or more!) with only shorter breaks coming up. You need to think about summer but can’t really look forward to it yet. It’s not an especially “vibrant” time of the school year for me. I’m definitely also struggling a little.

Good luck! We can do this!

Oh, Italy! Exciting! I love planning a vacation. We went to France a couple of years ago, and drove over the border into Italy, and the driving was indeed a little crazy. I think trains are your friend.

I’m sorry you’re feeling crummy. I think an inhaler sounds like a good idea. I like the sweet stories of your kids. Hang in there.

The beginning of January always feels like a slog to me… I’m sorry about that cough and hope the storm wasn’t too rough on you (we had a lot of wind and rain, but not as much flooding as I thought there would be on my commute this am). Italy sounds so amazing – good on you for pulling the trigger and having something amazing to look forward to!

Yay to Italy! I really wanted to do the Amalfi coast but we weren’t going at the right time of year. We ADORED Rome, but I really want to make it back to that part of the world again.

I find January and February long, dark, hard months. I definitely recommend getting a puffer for the persistent cough. After I had COVID I had a bad cough for MONTHS and it was waking me up and I had a lot of abdominal pain from coughing so much and using those muscles. I went on a puffer and used it THREE TIMES (which kinda sucked because it was expensive) and it basically healed overnight. Sending love and healing wishes ❤

I hope your cough goes away soon, and that you avoid a new one from your students. Darling kid moments— so cute. And yay to vacation planning!!

Italy sounds amazing! Good call to not drive. I have never driven in Europe and kind of doubt I ever will? It seems like between trains and ubers/cabs/etc you can make it work without a car? I find driving stressful enough in the US! Ha!

January can be a slog since winter is usually getting old by this point but we have had such a mild winter so it hasn’t been bad at all.

I feel you. Missing the fresh January energy too. Started out great and enthusiastic with a trade fair and fun but came back with Covid which puts a damper on everything. Over a week now. So tired.

How exciting you have planned your summer vacation already. I need to get that going too otherwise there won#t be any or it will be so so expensive again.

I hope you’re finally on the mend – physical illness can be so exhausting. No wonder you’re not feeling the new year energy. But a trip to Italy sounds exciting!
