Thanks to Elisabeth for the inspiration! All in all, 2023 has been a wonderful year. The country had peace, clean streets, and taxes. We had medical care, heat, days off, money, and plentiful food. Like, what else do we need?

As I look through my camera roll, I notice so many great memories, wonderful moments, changes of seasons, growing, aging, learning, and teaching. Looking at a big picture, our lives are pretty darn good. So then I struggled with “what do I include????” So I decided not to overthink it. Rather, I am rolling with whatever comes to mind.

Favorite Meal: Mosárabe salad in Córdoba. Oranges, olives, lox, avocado, walnuts, onions, etc. So, so good!

Favorite TV Show: Yellowjackets- it’s the only one I watched this year. What can I say, I don’t watch many shows.

Favorite Movie: Eileen. There were others, of course, but Eileen is fresh in my mind. Just saw it last weekend.

Favorite Song: That That by Psy and Suga or anything jazz.

My regular rotation on Spotify

Favorite Purchase(s): Plane tickets! Leggings. Inexpensive golden hoop earrings. Two dresses from Marine Layer.

One of the Marine Layer dresses; another one is blue and white.

Favorite Decision(s): 1. starting this blog in March of 2023. 2. Our trip to Denmark, 3. Our trip to Spain and Portugal. 4. taking charge of my own retirement planning.

Favorite Book(s): I honestly don’t know how many books I read in 2023 and how many books I did not finish. But two books stand-out: “Overwhelmed” is non-fiction and “My American Life” is a fictional novel but deeply based in reality.

Favorite Beauty Products: in October I had a little bit of a revelation. And that revelation was that I need to invest more in quality skin care. Pretty much everything I got from Sephora was top-notch. Even the eyeliner and lipgloss! But three products kind of stand out: face cream with plant squalene, honey mask, and a scrub.

Top Favorite Moments of the Year:

  1. Walking in Alcazar of Seville and holding hands with T, while the kids ran ahead and played in the Alcazar mazes.
  2. Sitting on a bench in La Alhambra gardens while the kids played nearby in a fountain.
  3. Our Copenhagen Airbnb host giving the kids and I warm coats out of his own closet because we were freezing in Denmark in April.
  4. Student tearing up when I gave them a birthday card for their birthday
  5. Rainn potty training! YES!
  6. Decorating my own classroom at the end of August and making it all MINE.
  7. Watching my kids roam the ancient streets of Spanish towns
  8. Hugging my friend Joanna in Poland
  9. R falling asleep at the beach in Portugal, I can’t even!
6AM in Zafra! We were the only ones awake!
R napping at the beach in Portugal ❤
Eat up, brah – R is wearing a borrowed snow suit in Denmark.

I LOVE these lists. What a great year. And you’re right – when we consider having the basic necessities of life (peace, food, love) and so many extras it really puts life into perspective.

I’m so glad you started blogging this year ❤

What a great way to reflect on your year.
I tried to read Overwhelmed a few years ago, and, ironically, didn’t find time to read it and then had to return the book to the library.
I love how many international memories you made this year. I want to prioritize travel more, but the planning is where I always get stymied – I’m so terrible at making decisions. Maybe you can do a post on how you trip plan these big adventures? I would love to hear.

Hi Diane! Thank you for giving me an idea for a post! I just added it to drafts 🙂 “how to plan big trips with the kids” there is no secret really. I buy the tickets and roll with it. If the kids whine or cry in Iceland, then can whine and cry in New Jersey.

Yes, I love this. When you think of everything going on in other parts of the world, and everything we have- we’re so lucky. An amazing trip like the one you took is icing on the cake. It sounds like you had a really great year. And I love the beautiful photo of you in the dress!

Right?! When i was writing I was thinking “all of our problems seem so insignificant.” But then again, writing for the sake of writing.

I love reading your favorites. I’m not sure I can remember what I ate yesterday, much less my favorite meal of 2023. LOL. Thank you for sharing your life with all of us this year.

I love that marine layer dress! Great purchase! You had a lot of wonderful moments during 2023! I need to do some reflecting but maybe when I’m not sick! Right now all I can think about is all the illnesses we have had but when I take a step back I can see that we have it so so so good. Many do not have their basic needs met and/or fear for their lives!

My best meal was probably a meal I had at the restaurant by our house one day when Phil took the kids to his mom’s!
