Join San and others we make our way through #NaBloPoMo! More information about this great initiative can be found here !

The quintile system comes from Sarah Hart-Unger. If you want a detailed view of quintiles, then listen to this episode of her podcast – Best laid Plans.

In essence, you divide the year into FIVE chunks if you work in quintiles and not FOUR when working in quarters.

Quintile 1: January 1st to the start of spring break (usually, it’s end of March for NJ schools). Highlights: goal setting, global view of the year. T’s and R’s birthdays, Valentine’s Day, International Women’s Day (March 8th), St. Patrick’s day (March 17th).

Quintile 2: End of spring break to the end-of-school (beginning of April till mid June). Highlights/feels: my birthday, assessment, wrapping up the academic year, reflection for the school year to come, graduation(s), celebrations. Summer Solstice.

Quintile 3: Summer. End-of-school till start of school in September. Highlights: travel, books, beach.

Quintile 4: Start of school till November 1st. Highlights: Back-to-School, setting new routines, fall activities, Halloween.

Quintile 5: November 1st till December 31. Highlights: reflection and celebration season. NJ Teacher Convention, Thanksgiving, L’s birthday, Christmas, and New Years.

Why do I like this system?

Each quintile has feelings associated with it so I am more able to be in it fully versus just muddling though and wishing for a more delightful season. Quintiles are smaller and easier to work with. This year will be the first year that I have tried the quintile system for the whole year!

No picture for Q5 yet but soon!

I thought this was what you were doing when you talked of Q5 but I have never heard anyone using this concept. It is interesting and it might work for me too. I will check out the podcast you recommended.

Welp, the other day I reorganized all the blogs I follow on Feedly, and somehow you disappeared!! All of a sudden it dawned on me- I thought Daria said she was doing NaBloPoMo.. why am I not seeing any posts?? Because I somehow deleted you, that’s how!! Whoops! Glad I figured this out and got you back!

I also like the quintile concept although I’ll admit I haven’t been really organized about tons of quarterly or quintile or even monthly goal setting this year. I think it’s a great idea and though and makes a lot of sense!

Oh!!!! I’m glad you found me :))) I still have not decided if I’m going away with Rainn… The big teacher convention is next week and we are off for four days, but so far no cabins are available- see, should have planned it better. 🙂

This is the first time I’ve heard of using quintiles instead of quarters for organizing the year’s activities and thoughts and such. Interesting idea!

I heard about the quintile system through Sarah, but I guess my brain doesn’t work that way (especially since I am not involved in the school calendar), but I can see how this can be a useful way to think about the year! So glad it’s working for you.

Ah, a deep dive into quintiles! I really like Sarah’s blog but haven’t listened to her podcast yet. I still have some questions- I’ll listen to the podcast episode. Thanks!

I really think this would work for me— perhaps 2024 is my year to try, but really, I think 2025 would make more sense since it’s so neatly divisible by 5, and I could play around with the 20 and the 25…

I’m starting to realize that I am not as much of a planner as I thought. I do not have goals for every year/quarter/month. Mostly I’m just muddling through. I do like seeing how everyone else figures out their life, though.

I read up on the quintile system after you posted about it, and I think it is SUCH a great system for teachers or those with school-aged children. I don’t think it would work for me – my brain just doesn’t compute seasons in that way. But hooray for finding a system that works well for you!
