The quintile system comes from Sarah Hart-Unger. If you want a detailed view of quintiles, then listen to this episode of her podcast – Best laid Plans.
In essence, you divide the year into FIVE chunks if you work in quintiles and not FOUR when working in quarters.
Quintile 1: January 1st to the start of spring break (usually, it’s end of March for NJ schools). Highlights: goal setting, global view of the year. T’s and R’s birthdays, Valentine’s Day, International Women’s Day (March 8th), St. Patrick’s day (March 17th).
Quintile 2: End of spring break to the end-of-school (beginning of April till mid June). Highlights/feels: my birthday, assessment, wrapping up the academic year, reflection for the school year to come, graduation(s), celebrations. Summer Solstice.
Quintile 3: Summer. End-of-school till start of school in September. Highlights: travel, books, beach.
Quintile 4: Start of school till November 1st. Highlights: Back-to-School, setting new routines, fall activities, Halloween.
Quintile 5: November 1st till December 31. Highlights: reflection and celebration season. NJ Teacher Convention, Thanksgiving, L’s birthday, Christmas, and New Years.
Why do I like this system?
Each quintile has feelings associated with it so I am more able to be in it fully versus just muddling though and wishing for a more delightful season. Quintiles are smaller and easier to work with. This year will be the first year that I have tried the quintile system for the whole year!
No picture for Q5 yet but soon!
