1. L has homework, like, official, homework. Every day, except Friday, math and ELA. She was resistant at first, but then I was like “ohhhh no, we do work because it’s work and not because it’s fun.” She seems to have come to peace with that by the time the week was over so on Thursday she said “mom, can you sit and have tea while I do my homework.” Aww, I thought you’d never ask ❤️

2. An interesting blend of wine I bought today. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre mix. Do I know what all those flavors are? Nope. Do I like them mixed? Yes. From California.

3. A new audiobook! recommendation of the Girls Next Door podcast- the Whisper Man 😱 It is SO good!

4. A student, who is a very Macho kind of “man” had his birthday today, and when I surprised him with a Mariachi “feliz cumpleaños” song and a simple birthday card that all other students signed, broke down. He is crying, I am crying. Oh, it was beautiful. I am not religious at all but God bless this boy. Just to be clear, I give all students cards on their birthdays even if they fall on a weekend – I then give it to them the Friday before.

5. Halloween costumes! Are here. I’m gonna be a butterfly, T is gonna be the Undertaker, L- a fairy, R- a transformer. So, we are not coordinated in the least but it’ll be fine.

Gosh that is such a sweet story about your student! What a sweet kid. I feel like boys would not have cried in public when I was growing up. I am happy to see that narrative about ‘men don’t cry’ is changing. What a sweet kid! And you are a kind teacher to do this. How do you know their birthdays? Do you have to ask for them or does the school provide that?

Paul has homework but it’s optional and our rule following boy has shocked us by not doing it!! We decided not to push it since it is optional. But I am a little miffed by his attitude/disinterest. Like who is this child?? 😉

The boys have their costumes (Spider-Man and Marshall the fire pup) but us adults are not into Halloween so we don’t dress up. I will prob have to come up with something for a family Halloween party at the end of the month, though!!

Thank you, Lisa! Our school provides information such as their dates of birth, address, and other by way of PwerSchool- our student management system. When I print my roster at the beginning of the year, I always like to include their birthdays for myself. I don’t get them gifts or anything but do write a few words on a card, in Spanish.

Hallowe’en costumes! I just ordered one for my son today. The oldest wants something complicated… not sure when that will happen. I’m always so impressed by people who have their costumes done before the middle of October.
    L’s top knot is adorable!
“Work because it’s work…” I love that phrase! I’m going to have to borrow it; my kids are always saying things “aren’t fun”.

Interesting. I think our school district has done away with homework until middle school. Kids *might* have to take something home if they don’t finish it, but I guess, according to the parents in my friend group, that it’s incredibly rare. The teacher have a spiel about how afterschool is for spending time with family and on developing extracurricular activities. I will be interested in seeing what happens with this homework-less group of students in the future.

Our school has SO little homework and I LOVE. IT. The most homework both of my kids had was actually in primary (kindergarten). As a parent I dread homework, so I’m glad my kids don’t have much to deal with yet. But I also know it will be a rude awakening to get to higher grades in middle school and high school when the homework load grows.

I love, love, love that you give each student cards. That’s so thoughtful and I mean so much, especially to some kids who might not have a wonderful home environment.

I’m a Scrooge about Halloween. I’d skip it if I could. One year with the kids I dressed up in PJs and a robe and carried a teddy bear around with me. I could get behind that sort of outfit – ha!
