The book I read this week was : the Midnight Library by Matt Haig. I loved it, it comes at a perfect time (see #3 below).

The high of my week was taking two days off work to nurse myself back to health. I had a cold. Those two days I took it easy, drank tons of tea, took care of my sore throat and took naps. Also read, watched a documentary, and just rested. Albeit I was sick, I felt grateful to have a generous amount of paid days off and use the time and space to feel better.

The low of my week was : my friend’s partner is very sick. It’s been an extremely emotional week. I’ll leave it at that.

Dinners : last night, we ordered pizza and mussels marinara. During the week, got by with chicken and rice, veggies, and tacos. Absolutely underwhelming and nothing fancy. But our bellies are full and we all got nutrients.

The best money spent : finally ordered two pairs of ballet flats from Nordstroms after roasting in my boots for the past two weeks. My prior flats were from 2016. I specifically remember I bought them at DSW to mimic Marie Kondo’s shoes.

My plans this weekend include : delivering freshly made lunch to my friend at the hospital, hanging with her for a bit. Reading, puttering around the house, picking up clutter here and there. Spending time outside. Maybe taking a family hike. Meditation. Journalling my feelings out. Sunday is Mother’s day and, honestly, I would prefer no gifts. I know T is preparing a nice pancake breakfast so I’m looking forward to that.

I just re-read what I wrote. I sound like a wet weekend (Matt Haig). But that’s okay. The point of this blog is to express what is going on.

Below is a jumble of images from that past week. Some were taken by me, others – by my 5 year old photographer 😉

I’m so sorry you were sick, but it makes such a difference to have concentrated time to recover and glad you were intentional about pursuing that needed rest.

    Lovely photos!

I am always a BIG fan of pancakes (or, better yet, waffles – I hope to have some tomorrow night for my Mother’s Day supper).

I was one of the few people that did NOT enjoy The Midnight Library. Maybe it was all the hype? But I left it feeling disappointed (though I can’t remember now exactly what it was that turned me off). It’s extra ironic because his NF Notes on a Nervous Planet was one of my favourite books of 2022.

Thanks for stopping by! I hope your vision is slowly improving. I absolutely loved your essay about Mother’s Day and how she took the time to write. It’s such a wonderful way to connect (especially in these times of text messaging and insta-whatever.

It’s good that you can take time off work when you’re sick. I think it is the best course of action to make sure you fully recover instead of trying to soldier through. I’m sorry about your friend’s partner, that’s really hard.

My style is to soldier through but I’m slowly learning to give myself grace. In my 40s lol Thank you for the well wishes – I will pass them on to her.

I mean, a book and some hot tea sounds like a heavenly weekend to me! I hope you’re feeling better and this week is better healthwise for you.

Yay for ordering some new shoes! You know you’ll be so glad to have that pesky chore off your list.

HI! Yes, the chore is done so no more of that open loop. Now I can break them in and enjoy having a pair of flats.

Kudos for taking care of yourself. We often put ourselves last but we can’t help others if we don’t take care of ourselves first.

I hope your friend’s partner is going to be ok!

I need to take better care of myself albeit I came a long way! My self-care is often haphazard and sort of an “afterthought.” You know Coco from Jakarta? I admire what she does to take care of herself.

I am flattered. I know I’m privileged to have time to be able to prioritize selfceare… I don’t take it for granted.
