Happy Saturday to everyone who is reading.

I am still treading water but did manage to come up for some air.

This week was super hard and I blame the YMCA. Important note: the YMCA in our town is for aftercare, the YMCA where we go swimming and I lift weights is a different YMCA in the next town over.

Our town YMCA has screwed me SO BAD last week.

On Monday night my husband emailed them asking “hey, where should our kids go for their aftercare?” The email we received back was “oh but aftercare does not start till next week, September 14th.”

WHAT.

It was the first week of school for my kids and my husband already scheduled his business trip. My teaching job is not flexible. And, no aftercare.

You would think that perhaps, just perhaps, aftercare would start when school starts, no?…

AND. The YMCA happily deducted $672 from our account on September 1st. For the whole month of September. AND. We never received ANY notification about the fact that aftercare starts on 09/14.

I was infuriated. I was rage-vomiting. I was cursing them left and right. I was crying. Because, WHO does that to working parents? I know it wasn’t personal but I took it very personally. I felt blindsided – the YMCA really screwed me. Forget the fact that I couldn’t exercise and didn’t really have any time to myself, that’s not such a big deal. It’s the MENTAL pressure that I could not take.

Thankfully. Our neighbors, who have the twin girls that my daughter is friends with, came through for us. They picked my kids up at school and delivered them to their house. Then I arrived home 30 minutes later and got them from their house.

I don’t want to rehash this past week but, at the same time, I do.

Monday – no school, labor Day. Family photos with my husband’s recording equipment.

Tuesday: my kids’ first day of school! T dropped them off, my neighbor picked them up. I got out of our faculty meeting (principal was understanding since she has kids of same ages as mine) and came home earlier than usual (but not early enough for dismissal). Still went to jiu jitsu in late afternoon.

Wednesday: kids=school, me=work, T dropped them off in the morning. Neighbor picked up. I rushed home after work, then to the YMCA for archery. Turns out, L cannot do archery without having taken a “safety” workshop. So, a safety workshop in October and archery classes in October-November-December at the Y (a different Y, not the one that screwed us over).

Thursday was tragic. T had an overnight trip so I dropped off the kids at their school at 7:10. R started crying when he got out of the car, because there was nobody at the school. Doors locked. Some lights on. Some lights off. A playground behind the school (that’s where I told them to wait). My heart was breaking with guilt.

Why such early drop off… My job is not flexible and my first class starts at 7:45. From 7:10 to 7:45 is just about enough time to get to work so that I am not late. The kids only had to wait till 7:30, until their school opens its doors. So around 20 minutes. They later told me that a teacher opened the door for them before 7:30 and L stated “our mom dropped us off earlier because she has to go to work.” Nobody called DYFS.

Ultimately, it was fine but what will happen in winter when it’s dark at 7:10AM and cold?… I also am going to get my daughter a flip dumb phone and program my and my husband’s numbers into it. Also, my kind neighbor and twin mom.

Friday my husband was back (actually, Thursday night) so he dropped the kids off.

Now that the week is behind me I can exhale. But the anxiety is still there.

A note on what we ate/things I made :

  1. the Balkan salad is very similar to a Russian cucumber salad. Essentially, it’s cucumbers, yoghurt, scallions, red onion, a little garlic, and dill. It also has honey and toasted walnuts. Delicious.
  2. Baba ganoush. The smoky eggplant and tahini paste. Loved it.
  3. A canned soup one night “Chicarina” – good enough for union work.
  4. Oven-roasted chicken strips, peas, brown rice.
  5. Tacos with fixings on Tuesday.

I could not go to the gym because there was no aftercare.

I didn’t really clean anything. Except the kitchen. The kitchen was tidied up every night so that I wouldn’t wake up to a really messy kitchen. I woke up to a kind of messy kitchen.

I started showering AT NIGHT! I would give myself a really nice scrub down in the evening including hair. Then just put my work clothes on in the morning. That saved me a lot of time.

I read with the kids and I read when they went to bed.

Camera roll from last week, however, reveals some very good moments, despite of what you read above:

Sunday at the Italian festival – corn with seasoning
Monday photo session (at our house, with husband’s equipment)
Italian ice at the fair on Sunday
Back to School fish braid on Tuesday
Mandatory back to school picture! Tuesday
R getting silly before going into BJJ; after school on Tuesday
Just what I needed on Thursday
A treat for myself on Friday on my way to work

I truly hope your week was better than mine!! I will catch up on blogs this weekend.

    Uhhhh that sounds tough.

And I would be kicking their doors in for not even letting you know about aftercare. And then paying for the whole months. Wow.

I can only imagine how hard it must have been leaving the kids at school. I am sorry.

so sorry about aftercare – what a nightmare. Sending hugs. And so good you have a neighbor who could help out!

Are there school buses to/from their elementary school?

Love the photos – the one of you and your daughter is gorgeous!

I’m shocked about the Y charging you for the entire month but not notifying you of when it started, that is crazy. I’m glad you made it through this past week, it sounds harrowing. I’m sorry that it was scary for them to be dropped off before the doors open. I hope a solution presents itself before it gets dark and cold. Maybe you could talk to the school and figure something out.

What? They charge you for ALL of September, but start aftercare on the 14th! That’s unacceptable. I would have freaked out too. Your emotions were absolutely valid! I am so glad you have a good relationship with your neighbor and she was able to help you out.

Super cute photos! Your week gives me PTSD! I struggled so much with rides and pickups and drop offs for the past five or six years. Teaching is flexible in some ways, but in others it is totally inflexible! I’m glad you made it through and I really hope that the Y being open this week makes it all easier!

That is SO TERRIBLE. I am glad you made it through, We cancelled our Y aftercare w/o even trying it because it closes at 6 and I have 2 late days a week (which is why we need care). We had no issue paying $450/month plus a Y membership for 2 days (have to pay for full care but only needed 2 days) BUT THEY WEREN’T OPEN LONG ENOUGH to work. Boooooo hiss.

What are you gonna do? I need strategies… We have a sitter for late nights but then we have to contact her way in advance. Like, I have a Back-to-School night this Thursday and T is traveling for business so Abbie will come. I’m just grateful she was available.

Oh gosh that was a rough week. That is bonkers that aftercare didn’t start when school started and it wasn’t communicated to you!! Our before and aftercare are onsite thank goodness and their communication is great. But it SHOULD be. T travels so frequently so the drop off issue is going to be so hard to solve for… there will probably be times of the year where it will be tough for them to be outside for 20 minutes. I would probably try to find care on weekdays mornings if there is a bus they can take to school, like a teen that could come and hang with them until the bus picks up. But since they are wearing uniforms, maybe this is a private school and they tend to not have bussing.

We had a pretty good week although it was our first time having the boys take the bus to and from school on Friday. I was the at home parent this week and it was rough having them around for an extra 1-2 hours because of ALL THE FIGHTING AND MESSING WITH EACH OTHER. Phil will be home with them the next 2 Fridays. He’s the one who felt most strongly about them taking the bus on Fridays but he rarely WFH… we will be splitting the Fridays but I would prefer they just go to aftercare!

Fighting and messing around are my kids’ given name… I separate them and they still-still- would not stop. I had them right after work, and you are right, I couldn’t get anything done because they were at the HOUSE.
This week they are in aftercare, yep, it started today, Monday. And I went to the YMCA after work.

That all sounds truly painful. What a way to leave you in the lurch. I’m glad you have the photos to prove there were godd moments in there too. Sometimes they are so hard to see, but you saw them! I hope the weeks get better from here.

UGH. That is SO much to deal with, Daria. So stressful, and not something you can just let sort itself out because the kids need to be cared for EVERY DAY and you have a full-time job.

I’m stressed just reading about it. All the gold stars for getting through the week, finding solutions that work, and I hope the coming weeks don’t feel nearly as crazy and hard and stressful.

I LOVE your dress in the top photo, by the way. You are a fashion icon ❤

THANK you for the love dear Elisabeth. I bet many people just felt their blood pressure rising when they read that post. And yet again I am grateful for people, just people in my life who came through.
Thank you! I love wearing red.

oh blergh!!! just reading your post stressed me out! I’m sorry you had to go through all that chaos and bad communication and uncertainty and scrambling. I hope this week will be more smooth and you get to got to the gym.

I’m a big fan of the evening shower, I have to say. It puts me in a good mood for bed and then I don’t have to do it in the morning. Actually I feel like it’s a very Asian thing to shower at night. My Taiwanese cousin once asked me why Americans always showered at night. “Is it because they get really stinky while sleeping?” I did not know what to say to that.

Ohhh it was not fun, thank you for your kind words.

An evening shower has been truly wonderful. I actually had time to paint my face and do my hair. AND, I had time left over to tidy up the house so that I don;t come back to a huge mess.

LOL, I did not mean to just leave my blog address as the comment. Geez. Thank goodness I copied the comment beforehand. Here’s my ACTUAL comment:

Oh man, that’s terrible, Daria! Why in the world would the Y aftercare not start when school starts? Way to put a ton of families in a bind! I’m sorry it was such a stressful start to the school year for you. I hope things begin to settle down. ❤
