I’ve been MIA from blog land because…sheesh…

What a week…

I feel like I’m drowning at work.

AND! I did not work on Monday; I only worked from Tuesday to Friday.

Major things that happened:

1. I met all my students on Tuesday. The first day and the first week is super important. That’s when you break them in (or they break you).

2. T was traveling Sunday-Wednesday

3. I have three preps. In teacher jargon: I have to prepare lessons for three different levels.

4. My own kids were in summer camp at their gymnastics place. I’m just glad they had openings.

5. Poor planning on my part: needed groceries mid week. Instacart to the rescue but that’s very unlike me.

@ I like all my students but many are still in the so-called “honeymoon” period. I was so happy to see some students who I recommended for honors last year. Those are the kids that I absolutely adore and, truly, any teacher is lucky to have them. And this year, it’s ME. Again! Usually, I have a very cordial relationship with all students but, you know there are those few that just are special. And I have four of them this year.

@ My classes seem unbalanced: ten people in one, twenty-three students in another. Fifteen. Eighteen. Twenty-five. That means that each class will be going at a different speed. Some classes will cover more material and have more individualized attention from me, and others – less, because of the class size.

@ The mental load at work is what is most overwhelming. I have the materials and resources but it’s constant thinking about work that bothers me. In spite of the fact that our contract negotiations are at an impasse, I still want my students to have engaging lessons. Because it’s not really their fault that some adults in their lives cannot agree.

So.

We have this long weekend coming up. I want to sit down and spend an hour or two on sketching things out for this year. Get all the ideas I have bumping around in my head out on paper.

This may only apply to teachers but I gave a diagnostic assessment this year. I’ve been wanting to do it for a while: to see for myself what gaps students have and how to best help them fill those gaps. I still put the grade into the system but it’s for informational purposes only so it doesn’t impact their final grade. I did a grammar and syntax assessment as well as a verbal assessment. It is a good reality check.

Regardless of overwhelm, I am happy to be back at work. The summer felt long and hot. I am ready for fall.

My own kids…

don’t start school till next Tuesday so this week they are at their gymnastics camp. There is an imbalance where I am in work mode and they are still in summer mode.

They had an ice cream social at their new school yesterday where they had a chance to meet their teachers and school peers.

This Labor Day long weekend I want to:

1 lift at the ymca: Saturday, Sunday, and Monday

2 do some work – planning, mainly

3 read my book

4 get groceries/meal plan

5 catch up on life: admin stuff, plan out next week, read blogs

After my first day back with students, the kids and I got pizza

How was your week?

Friend, that is a lot! I think transitions are always extra exhausting, especially with the kids being off school and still in “summer mode” and T away. (I feel like one impact of summer mode is my kids aren’t tired for bed nearly as early as they are once they’re in school which seems to tire them out.)

I’m glad you survived the week and I hope things settle down and feel more manageable once you settle into the academic term.

Oof that is a lot. And that is a wide variety of class sizes, too! I know you will find your rhythm but it’s overwhelming and you were solo parenting, too. I think the weekend following a period of solo parenting you should carve out some solo time for yourself and T can be the primary parent. I do that for Phil every time I travel because he needs some time and space to just be.

That is definitely a wide range in class size, I can imagine it’s difficult to manage and get them the instruction I know you want to provide. The first few weeks back to normal after summer vacation are always the most difficult, it seems. Good luck on a really great year!

I can only imagine the business for you right now but I totally get that the first days are majorly important to “break them in”. I just ha that experience. My niece called me after her second day of school and was head over heels with her new art teacher. She didnt like art much before but he is soooo cool. Teachers are so important in developing interests or ruining it.

Everything I read you sound like such a great teacher and the kids are lucky to have you. Hope you find your routine quickly and have a great weekend.

Wow, I’m amazed that the classes vary so much in size. Are they different subjects? I’m glad you have the return of some good students from before to look forward to. I’ve never had a teacher’s schedule, never considered how complicated it is to have kids on a different schedule.

It has to be a huge lift to have the first day of YOUR school before your own kids have started THEIRS, and with the spouse away to boot.

As a work-at-home person, I always have found it super difficult to be hard at work while the rest of the household is frolicking away nearby. Makes me very cranky. I totally get that feeling of the imbalance and I am here to confirm that it is grossly unfair.

I hope the second week is easier.

Oh gosh, this feels like a lot. I’m sorry you feel like you’re drowning, my friend. Sending you love.

I love the last photo of you and your kids at a pizza parlor! I love the pendant lights that hang from the ceiling. They remind me of what Pizza Hut had in their restaurants when I was growing up! It made me smile. 💛

Oh, so sorry to hear that. It is a lot, I’m not surprised you’re feeling overwhelm. I hope you get the time to yourself that you need to work out next steps.

I love that photo of the three of you, you look happy even amidst the overwhelm.

My week is busy getting everything tidied up before we go away next week. But I did manage to get my haircut and coloured today.

I have a friend who is an elementary school teacher (1st grade!) and I never envy that transition from summer mode to work mode for her. It’s NECESSARY to have that break but whew, is the transition hard even for adults. I hope you were able to have a restful yet productive long weekend so you can be in the right headspace for the next school year!

My sister is an elementary school teacher and she always tells me that the transition back to school after the summer break is rough. So, I feel you. I know you’re going to find your groove again, but this first week definitely sounds like A LOT.
