Thank you to everyone who reflected on my desire to get a position in higher education in addition to my k-12 job. It is not something that is done overnight and will require some deep thinking on my part. Most weeks I can barely keep my head above water, let alone teach a college-level class. The idea has not left me but, at this point in time, no active action will be taken. I simply do not have the bandwidth to go through with it in this season of life.

white space

Last week, my husband was away for a few days so I was solo parenting. Regardless, I had some generous white space on my calendar and nice buffers between work and home. My evenings were easy, too. I even managed to do a little gardening when the kids were on the trampoline.

Examples:

Monday, an easy day at work, then home, white space alone at the house!

Tuesday, did some gardening after coming home with the kids, trimmed roses.

Wednesday, swimming at the YMCA after work.

Thursday, a hard day at work but white space at home, took a nap and finished the Wedding People.

Friday, another easy day at work, then weights and cardio at the YMCA, then home, then my friend’s birthday celebration that ran very late into the night. Man was I tired the next day.

outside time

Look at the pink sky!

I get a lot of inspiration from podcasts these days. After listening to yet another podcast, I found out that current humans are nature starved. There is an “inside epidemic” going on where humans simply do not get enough time outside. The recommended dose of nature Rx? Five hours a week.

Because NJ had some summer-like weather last week I took to sitting outside with my morning coffee. It was glorious. I even walked around with my bare feet one morning.

allergies

Spring is here and my son and I are sneezing machines. Me- just a little, him- A LOT. Poor kid. Sneezing, runny nose, red eyes and puffy area around his eyes… I started giving him children’s Claritin and it seemed to help. Also, children’s Flonase. For me, I took a Claritin yesterday but that didn’t seem to help. The car has a thick layer of yellow pollen on it. I dusted the surfaces in the house multiple times to keep the pollen at bay. I love to open windows so it’s inevitable that pollen will get in.

Subscriptions

I want to subscribe to The Purse. It’s an online newsletter about finances, women, division of labor, and home economics (but not in the typical sense). I get some of their articles but want to dig into their archives and have unlimited access.

Overall, I do not subscribe to any of the paid content on the internet. Of course, we have Netflix and Hulu and stuff. But all that is family stuff.

I know my husband subscribes to a few creators in maker space. But me… I am just way too cheap to do that.

Maybe it’s time? Maybe I start with The Purse for $50/a year?

I wrote in my looking back, looking forward reflection that April will be low key, and so far, it has been just that. This coming week my husband is away for business again so it’s me and the kiddos. The weather is cooler and I can’t really sit outside in the mornings.

This week has some hard things and good things. My kids have their spring concerts. It is also “bring your child to work” day on Thursday. Their regular activities… Piano, jiu jitsu… Exercise and time outside, for me. And let’s not forget this thing called work.

A hibachi restaurant with friends this weekend was fun!

Questions for you…

Do you feel you get enough time outside?

Do you suffer from seasonal allergies?

What/who do you subscribe to in terms of independent creators/newsletters?

What is “white space” looks like for you?

Have a great week!

I subscribe to a number of patreons – most are book-related and I subscribe to Best of Both Worlds. I mostly see it as a way to financially support creators whose work I really appreciate. I also subscribe to a couple of Substacks.

We spend a lot of time outside in the summer/fall months and not much in the winter months. So on average, I think we get enough time outside, but it’s very unbalanced. We had some really nice days last week and it was so wonderful to go outside with the kids after lunch. Other kids on the block came over to play in our yard for a bit which make it extra fun for the boys.

I used to have horrible allergies. I was on allergy shots for a long period of time but I seemed to have grown out of them!

I used to take Claritin, but discovered Zyrtec works better for me, so now we take that. We get the generic at Costco. Allergies suck.

Yay for lots of white spaces on your calendar. Nice that the kids are old enough now that you can have some down time while with them.

I support a number of creatives on Patreon/Substack. If I really value the work they are doing (and they offer incentives, like extra podcast episodes/longer posts), then I want to support them in some small way. I can’t do it for EVERY creative person, so I try to pick the ones where I feel like my support will go farther. So I say, GO FOR IT.

I do not get enough outside time. 5 hours a week feels very doable, though!

      Hi Dasha,

I hope all goes smoothly for you this week. I like how you are anticipating hard things and nice things – helps to be prepared and aware when it’s best to press the easy button, and helps to have things to look forward to.

Time outside: I probably get an average of 5 h a week or close to it. I like going on walks. In the fall and spring, 2 of my kids have outdoor sports/meets – I am counting this as nature time because these often happen in parks and green spaces. When the weather is nice, we eat outside. So it all kind of adds up.

White space: I daydream, read books, read blogs.

Subscriptions: none (in this context). I am thinking about subscribing to our local newspaper, but I want a physical copy.

That’s right, you do love going for walks. I average maybe two hours per week? It’s low. Especially that NJ is NOT warm this season. Also, the allergies, gosh… I do try to get my eye balls into sunlight as soon as possible after I wake up.

We get a lot of time outdoors, but we are lucky enough to live in SoCal where it is possible to do so year round. I have 5 subscriptions for content creators. I’m not sure if that’s too many, but it is nice to support creators I enjoy. I have: Pantsuit Politics Premium, The Girls Next Door, Optimistic Musings, About Progress, and the Workspace for Children.

That is nice to support the creators you appreciate! I am just way too cheap but I think I’m going to sign up for the Purse.

Thank goodness I have a dog. Five hours a week is not an issue for me! I am medicated for allergies all year round. I take Zyrtec/Claritin/Allegra/whatever Costco has for sale every day and Flonase during the summer/early fall when my seasonal allergies really kick into overdrive.

The only subscriptions I pay for are for dog and cat products and Spotify. Our household has an AppleTV subscription, as well. That’s it. I feel like I have access to multiple libraries and if I can’t find what I want for entertainment with all those offerings, I should just go for a walk. Ha! I am too cheap for the modern world.

I didn’t respond to your last post, but as someone who works in higher ed right now, it is not a field I would send people to. Enrollments are declining, colleges are closing, students are almost exclusively using AI, and it’s a terrible, terrible working environment.

Since I live in Opposite Land (Florida) I struggle to be outside enough in the summer. Running helps, but if I’m not training for a big race (which I rarely am in the summer) I probably don’t get five hours outside.

I have a couple Patreon subscriptions. I say, subscribe to The Purse! It really isn’t that much, and you can always cancel it if you’re not getting enough out of it.

It’s nice being in the house alone, isn’t it? That’s definitely white space for me.

Hi Jenny! It’s been cold this week in NJ so I just poked my nose out most mornings but sat inside afterwards.

That time spent outside with your coffee sounds divine! I definitely get a nature craving, and am having one right now, as I have been in cities more and currently am in Bangkok which is s concrete jungle. I do have a park nearby, and purposefully booked a place near the park, but it is 100 degrees out and I definitely am NOT going to the park as much as I had planned. I really need some trees and fresh air!

Hi Kyria, yes Bangkok is quite the city. I remember I was there back in… 2014. Are you by the Lumpini park by any chance? I remember walking around there…

I am not near Lumphini, but I am near Chatuchak! However, it is literally 90 degrees at 7 pm and so getting out into the park is not really that fun. I went out for a walk yesterday and it was good to get exercise but hot and tiring to be out in the sun!

I live in a city so I walk my kids to school and that definitely gets me to > 5 hours a week. During the pandemic I realized how important outside time is. I’m still working on having white space. My husband and I try to spend time together in the evenings, but I usually find myself filling any other free time catching up on work. I have a new job which doesn’t feel the most sustainable so I’m hoping to pivot from working in my free time to reading eventually.
