Last week was a four day week (off on Monday) but it seemed kiiiind of long. February slump is a thing…

Delights

1. Messages from Michelle’s calendar, like this one:

The calendar gifted to me by Michelle ❤️

2. Exercise: I delighted myself by going to the Y on Wednesday (cardio+weights), Thursday (swim) and Saturday (cardio and weights). Also, I had physical therapy for my right knee and that felt like a workout.

3. Emerging markets: started investing into an emerging markets index fund – the idea has been on my radar for a while now. Glad I saw it through this week.

4. NOT a delight but something interesting: America’s Next Top Model documentary on Netflix. T and I used to watch ANTM back in 2012… This documentary went into depth of making ANTM and the cringe of behind the scenes. Former contestants and judges talked about the grueling process the girls were put through. The cruelty of reality TV is astounding.

5. Spring break road trip is booked! The kids and I will do a road trip to Myrtle Beach, So. Carolina by way of Richmond, VA. Leave on 03/26, drive five hours to Richmond, VA, overnight there. Next day, another five hour drive to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Come back, again, via an overnight in Virginia, on 04/04. Last year we visited Chincoteague, VA, Outer Banks N. Carolina and Kennett Square, PA.

6. Memorial day camping trip is booked, too. Not too far from our house – about one hour drive. Two summers ago we went camping all the way upstate New York, about two hours away. But they didn’t have any openings this year so a NJ state park it is.

Decisions on summer

1 Italy or no Italy? I was all SET on our 14 day road trip to northern Italy. Milan to lake Garda, to Dolomites, to Lake Bled, to Abano Terme, to Venice. Leave home from Venice. At the moment I am on the FENCE because #economy and volatility of my husband’s job but still… I know someone whose dad waited to travel when he was retired and he died within three months of retiring…

2 If not Italy, then…what? I have always wanted to see the Deep South. Tennessee, the Carolinas, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi? Emerald coast? This road trip also costs money but may be cheaper. BUT: I will put a lot of wear and tear on my car since I will have to drive from New Jersey. And it will put a lot of wear and tear on ME to drive so much.

3 summer camp. Technically, we don’t HAVE to book any camp since I am home in the summer. However, do my kids want to spend the whole summer with me? Probably not. Do I want to spend the whole summer with THEM? Also no. Camp breaks up the routine, and it has a pool. The question is: when? End of June, July or August? Camp is $400 per kid, per week so multiply that by 2. $800 per week, for both. For comparison’s sake…An apartment in Hyères, south of France is $2500 per month. Less than camp, per week. Of course, you have to get there by plane so an additional 3K.

4 Russia trip. My mother is adamant that I should NOT visit this summer. It sounds terrible but she has a good point. Dad is doing okay (considering), my brother has stepped up a lot. The flight is grueling. Getting to Chelyabinsk, Russia takes two full days, and not only it is confusing physically, it is also a total mind f**k mentally. Last year I went through Türkiye, the trip was okay but I felt disoriented for days. Also, the cost. If I go through the Middle East, it is surprisingly cheaper: Newark to Doha, Doha to Moscow, and back: 2K. Then I just have to buy internal plane tickets Moscow-Chelyabinsk.

The larger question is- could I live with the guilt of not going?…

5 OR our summer looks like this: the kids go to camp, and I get a summer job, not related to teaching. I have not looked at any of the summer jobs available, and, honestly, I don’t want to. I want to enjoy my summer and not work. But I also do not want two months with nothing.

Pic on the cover: my daughter and I during my husband’s birthday dinner.

Have you started thinking about summer yet?

What should I do?

When the boys were younger, we often did a mish-mash of things over the summer. They usually did ONE week of overnight summer camp. My kids often did the (free) 1/2 day summer school program through our school district which lasted about 6 weeks- it was like fun enrichment type classes, not real summer school. This broke up the days and then it was okay for them to just chill or have screen time in the afternoon for a bit. Opposite weeks I’d usually schedule 1-2 “day camps” or classes through our city’s rec department, and then I felt better about the “down” days being more low key.

We’d also typically do a family trip for 1-2 weeks- National Park road trips at that age were a huge hit with our family. Have you done Acadia National Park? We had an amazing road trip (I have all the posts on my Travel page) to New Hampshire (White Mountains), Vermont and up the coast of Maine (ending in Acadia) and it’s beautiful in the summer. Have your kids been to Niagara Falls? That could be incorporated too. I’m not sure I’d want to do the Deep South of U.S. in the middle of summer. It is HOT and MUGGY there. Another fun not-super-expensive trip is to do the beautiful horse country area of Kentucky (Lexington Horse Park), could see Louisville and go to Mammoth Cave National Park- my kids LOVED that. We also did a wonderful trip to Smoky Mountain National Park which is amazing for kids and we went to beautiful Asheville, North Carolina too as part of that. So many great options not too far from you!

Wow, you have some big decisions regarding summer! Italy! Russia! So much money and effort and time, but also so much to be gained by spending that money, effort, and time.

Have you considered renting a car for your road trips? I know it’s an added expense, but then you save the wear and tear on your car.

Your travel plans are impressive! I wish I had been better about doing more trips when my daughter was a little younger (she just turned 17 this week). We did some fun trips, but not a ton and now it is hard to schedule anything with her likely having a job this Summer and my Spring Break being broken up by some Union work for me (last thing I needed was something else to do, but it felt irresponsible to not do something productive as of late) and her maybe working that too. But, maybe you’ve inspired me to look for some weekends!

I hope that your trip to Russia can either happen OR that things remain stable and you don’t feel guilty about it not happening. It is such a hard thing to decide – I can’t imagine.

Sue, I started traveling with the kids when they were little. My daughter’s first international trip was at 18 months (to Russia) and my son’s was at 2 years (to Iceland). I have loved those trips and want to continue every summer until they don’t wanna do anything with me lol

So many interesting travel plans all with their own perks and drawbacks. You always do a phenomenal job of planning these sorts of things, so I’m sure whatever you choose will be amazing.

Is there one that makes you the most excited? Or, flipped another way, is there one that you find yourself actively dreading? I think our gut instinct is often helpful when trying to make these sorts of decisions.

The summer can be so long and nebulous and hard to fill, especially when kids are younger. Now my daughter is old enough to work some in the summer which feels like a whole new stage of life.

The trip to Russia sounds so complicated and of course the logistical side of things is only half of the challenge since I know it is emotionally exhausting, too. I hope you get clarity about the best way forward ❤

Love that picture of you and your daughter! So sweet.

I say Italy > summer camp! I mean, if you only have funds for one. 🙂 Can you go to Europe and your husband can join in the middle for a bit? I find the longer I stay, the more I save, or at least that is what I tell myself. But seriously, the flight is often the big expense. Speaking of that, do you have a credit card with miles? And if not, maybe get one and then maybe by next summer you can use them to buy all flights? Many sign up bonuses are 60-100k and often a RT ticket to Europe is around 40-50k, so you would have to accumulate some, but it would be half off or more!

I just used up my miles to pay off the 1,300 car rental from last summer. This time we are only renting a car for the Dolomites region.

I’m so happy that you’re enjoying the calendar, Daria! Ooooh, those are some big decisions. I wish I had some good advice for you, but whatever you choose, I know you’ll make the most of it. My only thought is no summer job!!!

Summer is so complicated! Last year, we tried the approach where my kid had a few short camps, but stayed home the bulk of the time, and that did NOT work for us. So this year she needs more… and yet I haven’t looked into it at all yet. It’s so overwhelming and expensive.

All of your travel plans sound wonderful, and I know it will be hard to narrow them down to the one that feels right.

Summer really IS so complex. I have the luxury to not work so that complicates things even more sometimes.

I would for sure NOT get a job during the summer! I know it’s nice to have some structure but I can’t imagine that being a source of joy for you. It’s one thing if you need the money. I don’t think the economy is all that awful so I wouldn’t make decisions today for something that might not happen. Your job is very stable so if something happens to T’s job, you could make do for quite some time I’d think and could make cuts to future travel plans.

I’m no help on the travel decisions because I can’t even handle taking my 2 kids on a long weekend trip. Ha. I prefer to only travel with 1, and ideally the older one. I’m hoping Taco will get easier to travel with. He is bummed to not go to DC with us, but he would struggle w/ all of the walking we do and I fear the boys would bicker and wrestle and drive me crazy. So it’s just best to do 1:1 trips for now.

These are some big decisions. We loved taking our kids to national parks when they were your kids’ ages. Italy would be amazing, but pricey. I like elisabeth’s suggestions – is there a thing you would dread? Of one you would be excited about. Hooray for having spring break sorted. We did that last week, although we have till Feb 25th to cancel our reservation so we keep peeking to see if we find a better rental.

My kids get a free national park pass in 4th grade so I want to take them then, L will be 10 and R will be 8. A perfect age.
      Italy is ridiculously expensive.

Phew- those are a lot of options! Honestly, a road trip through the deep south in the summer sounds horrible to me. It will be SO HOT AND HUMID. I would much, much, MUCH rather be in Italy! What do the kids want to do? I mean, do they want to go to camp? You could get their feedback and insert that into the equation.

Summer is definitely easier (and more boring) around here. My daughter wants to get a job, and the only travel we’ll do is most likely to Indiana FOR MY SON’S WEDDING. That part isn’t boring.

Good luck with these decisions- the trip to Russia sounds especially complicated. I guess the big question is, can you live with the guilt of not going. Your mom is urging you not to go, so there’s that. This is a tough one!

Hi Jenny, thank you for stopping by! You are right about the Deep South- I didn’t think about that. The kids want to go to Italy. Me, too. It’s been on my mind for a few weeks now. I am twisting this way and that, and it comes out as expensive regardless. I just have to get over myself and purchase plane tickets- then I’ll be locked in if you know what I mean..
