Christmas Eve

We spent this day bumming around the house and preparing for our annual “open house” party where people drift in and out from around 4pm till about 9pm. And by “preparing” I mean we vacuumed, dusted and set up the space for food in the dining room.

Setting up

In early afternoon, my husband and kids also placed the bags for our town annual Christmas Eve luminaries. Last year, we had paper bags, this year T decided to 3D-print them. They were sturdier but not as bright as the paper ones.

The open house Christmas eve party was a lot of fun. People came, stayed for a while, then left, then came back again. Some folks came early and stayed for the entire evening, others arrived later and only stayed for a little while. Some people stopped for a drink while they were on their way to a theater event or a family dinner.

Friends, friends of friends, neighbors, colleagues. It was a buffet style party where people just helped themselves to food and drinks. Relatively low-stress since we decided to order food from a catering place this year, instead of making it ourselves (prior years).

After cleaning up the party, T and the kids read “The Night Before Christmas” and went to bed around 8:30pm. Oh, they also opened one present on Christmas Eve: my daughter got a plush wale and my son got a Christmas Pusheen. Cookies were left for Santa which he, of course, ate.

Christmas

My daughter was up at 6:00 am and patiently went downstairs to wait for us to wake up. She is 8 so she has more self-control. When my son was up, who will be 6 in three weeks, that’s when we started opening the presents. T and I got each other very few things but the kids made out like bandits.

They each got some Legos kits, books, chemistry and potion kits, and games. My daughter loved Bananagrams, Smug Owl and My Family is So Weird games (thanks for the rec, Suzanne!) My husband and I are yet to play the Moose Master party game.

Creeper!

The rest of the day was spent eating leftovers and playing with their new toys. I took a nap and read some more of Sarah’s book.

The kids also took out ten toys (each) that they want to donate. A mandatory practice since we cannot just keep adding the toys. Their rooms could become impassable! And sometimes, they already are.

A friend came over for a very informal dinner, and we had leftover food from the party. Plus I packed her a few take away containers- we still have so many leftovers!

The struggle is real. Patience is not one of his virtues.

On December 26th, Boxing Day (although we don’t really use that term in the US), we cleaned up the house even more since there were loose scraps of wrapping paper, so we ran the vacuum. Went for a walk to rid ourselves from some cabin fever symptoms. Worked on a puzzle. Read a book. Napped. Watched a movie. Listened to some podcasts.

Made a blanket fort:

And that’s a wrap! Christmas 2025 is in the books. I feel content, with the type and the quantity of things. I did not bake anything (yet) and I’m not sure if I will. The kids haven’t asked to make cookies, and I haven’t reminded them.

As I finish this post, my daughter and I are in the sauna. The Korean sauna that I usually go to has a family day today.

Your Christmas Eve party sounds like so much fun! I also love the picture of your kids reading Night Before Christmas 2021 vs. now. So cute 🙂

I love that your Christmas Eve leftovers made it to your Christmas dinner, that really helps take the stress out of life.

I’m interested in your process of gifting 10 things…what if the kids chose something that they had just received? Would you be OK with that? What if it were a gift from a grandparent (this year I mean, not past) I’m always afraid of insulting people when giving things away.

Hi Julie, ten things?… I don’t think it was me who wrote about that… I’d love to know more about that though.
We “try” to limit the gifts buuuuut… doesn’t really work.

Hi Daria, I was referring to this part of your post above:

“The kids also took out ten toys (each) that they want to donate”

So I said gift, but meant donate. 🙂 I was curious how they pick the things to donate, and whether they do that before opening gifts or after, and if they ever give away something that you wish they wouldn’t, like a gift that they just got. Thinking back to when my daughter was little, there were some gifts she got from other family members that she gladly would have donated that same day.

Ohhhhhh yes! They go through their “old” toys before opening the presents under the tree, and pick out ten things they would give away.
For example, R used to be very much into paw patrol but that is over so he donated the truck. I don’t really have attachment to their toys, they had them, they played with them, and it’s their decision to say goodbye. So the gifts that they received this year will probably be seeded through next year to make space for 2026 gifts.
Even with the toys being donated, their rooms have plenty!

I love that you have so many friends and neighbors and colleagues to celebrate the holidays with when your own family is so far away. It sounds wonderful.

Your Christmas Eve party sounds so fun! I love that people can drop in and stay as long as they’d like! And it’s nice to have the leftovers to enjoy the next day to make Christmas Day a bit easier!

Taco got something like 7 LEGO sets! There aren’t many things he asked for this year so it was an easy thing to tell people to get him. So Paul has his work cut out for him and taco doesn’t enjoy the assembly part – he just wants to play with them.

Wow! For Rainn it’s the opposite- he loooooves the process itself, I guess the challenge of putting the pieces together, but then he loses interest and undoes the toy then makes something entirely different from those pieces.

That’s how Paul is! He loves to put them together but then he does not enjoy playing with them. So they make good pair – Paul builds, Taco plays with it with a lot of imaginative play!

My son also LOVES LEGO! He got one set for Christmas but hasn’t finished building it yet.

I love the idea of a holiday open house. No specific time for people to be there, you don’t have to fit everyone in all at once, and seems a little less formal. I may have to try that on a future holiday. A sauna experience also sounds lovely. I will check to see if we have something locally!

What a lovely Christmas for your family! I love the luminaries with the whole neighborhood. Such a great tradition!

I also really love donating 10 toys after Christmas – that’s a great idea to keep down clutter!
