1. Corinne Low has a new book out, called “Having It All.” I read her interview on Substack and was left with mixed feelings about labor division, “utility”, and hobbies/leisure. A new baby, a book tour, and being a professor at Wharton. I will not be purchasing the book since I rarely/never buy books, but the concept looked interesting. I wonder is she cracked the code for equal labor division..

2. Friday night dinner at my friend B’s place. She loves to cook and feed people. It’s been a while since I saw my friends (last time was late October) so we were overdue for a catch up. I came home at 10:30 and was very fried.

What a beautiful spread she prepared for us

3. Korean sauna and spa. On Saturday I roasted for 4 hours at the sauna. I did dry, wet, then dry eucalyptus, then.. who knows?.. Turkish? I want to make this sauna experience a regular thing, say, twice a month or once a month, at least. I bought a pack of ten back in October and just used the first voucher this weekend. I have a picture of me in a facial mask but I’ll spare you.

4. Skating with Santa. Oh, this was awesome! As many of you know, Sundays are our “skating” day where the three of us go to the rink for public skating session. Today was a special event, where we skated with Santa, Mrs. Clause, Buddy the Elf, and other Christmas helpers. There were also read-alouds, caroling, cookies and hot chocolate. Our county did a great job on this.

5. My parents’ situation is always at the back of my mind. My dad is post-stroke, my mom is 80 and is his primary caregiver. My brother likes to get boozed up often, gets verbally abusive when under the influence, and I am over here in NJ living my best life. I say it in jest, of course, but the feelings of helplessness are real.

6. I am seriously considering hiring a biweekly cleaner. Thank you, Elisabeth, for the kind pep talk. I needed it.

7. I ordered a gift for myself- a Christmas tree ornament featuring an orange kitty sleeping on a stack of books. I got the ornament, but the ornament featured a cute rat, not a cat. Is there a sign from the universe I should be decoding? What do rats represent?

8. My Secret Santa is Michelle!! Thank you, dear Michelle, for the gifts! I will wear the pin with pleasure and always think of you when I put it on. Red glasses- you nailed it. And yes, the daily calendar will serve as a daily reminder that overwhelm is temporary and there is always, always beautiful things to ponder, even if it’s just for a minute.

Sounds like you have been making the most of the season. I love that photo of you all with Santa and his elves. And yes, a cleaner will give you a bit more margin when yuo are feeling stretched.

What a great Secret SANta gift! I love the pics from your visit, and I agree, if you can manage a cleaner and it will help, DO IT.

I love that pin! So cute. I am sorry you are dealing with distant parent/caregiver issues – that’s so difficult. I am going ice skating tomorrow with my Girl Scout troop (we were supposed to go last Monday but the University had a rink “takeover” and we decided that might be a little difficult to navigate). I will likely not skate, but it will be fun to be out there. It is in the same park with our town’s tree and they lit that on Friday night, so festive! Here’s hoping that the holiday time brings peace and comfort to you and yours.

Hey Coco, I wear it on the side of my sweaters. I only own two pins: a cat one from Paris, and now this new one from Michelle. I like them with sweaters, but they can be used to hold the cardigan or a blouse together.

That sauna experience sounds divine… do you just zone out? Do you read? Listen to music?

The distance-caregiving situation is very difficult. You have loves and responsibilities here and it is great that you are living your best life… that is what everyone who loves you wants for you ❤

Oh dear Maya, thanks for stopping by. The Russia situation is truly hard: do I go there? And, if I do, I cannot stop my brother from drinking. I cannot fix the sanctions, I cannot make it all go away…
The sauna has a variety of sections, with couches in between where you can rest/read/nap. It’s like these “pods” that are saunas and the rest of it looks like a retreat of sorts.

Hi Daria! I’m so pleased that you liked my secret SANta gift! 😊 It was like that pin jumped out at me and said, “Send me to Daria!” Your sauna day sounds amazing, and yes, hiring a cleaner is a fabulous idea. You work so hard and deserve that little luxury.

I have so many feelings about the concept of having it all. I guess it depends on the definition of “it all.” Sometimes I think it’s impossible to achieve everything, you know? Maybe I’ll read that substack newsletter, even though I have MANY unread newsletters at the moment.

What a great secret Santa gift!

That is a wonderful pin! And your friend’s table for dinner! Lovely.

I suspect #1 and #6 are connected. My husband has been doing all of the laundry lately. Which should be fine because I did most of it for years and years. I ask myself, why do I feel guilty that he is doing the laundry these days?

I sympathize that you have those family difficulties and cares.

The skating event sounds marvelous and fun!

Hire the cleaner!! It’s the best gift to give yourself. We have one right now thanks to gift cards from coworkers and I am hoping I can convince Phil to keep it. It’s wonderful to walk into a spotless house.

I hope you can make the Korean spa a monthly thing. You deserve it to offset all the solo parenting you do!!

I’m so glad you had a fun get together with your sister friends!!
