Motivation has been lacking for me this past week, month, season?… Year? I am most unmotivated around my luteal phase, when I am stressed/overwhelmed, and when I don’t have anything to look forward to.

I shouldn’t be giving advice on motivation therefore this post is self-serving. Usually -usually – these things work for me. But I also have to keep in mind sometimes it’s not lack of motivation, rather, it’s because I’m so bloody tired.

1. do something small – put the dish into the dishwasher, make the bed, wipe the counter, reorganize my work bag. Align the shoes in the closet. Tidy up my desk at work.

2. go outside and take a nice sip of air, a few times. Feel the cold on my face.

3. deadlines. Yep, deadlines work well for me.

4. my future self. I visualize that future Daria and do things the night before.

5. values. I think some of the motivation comes from my overall life values. Travel, education, self-discipline, family, presence..

Extra credit: seeing role models. Not celebrities or influencers but real people, like friends or fellow bloggers. People with energy, self-discipline and drive.

What motivates you?

This month I am participating in #NaBloPoMo2025. A running list of participants can be found on San’s NaBloPoMo page as well as more information about this lovely initiative on this NaBloPoMo page.

    Oh, definitely struggling with motivation…

Number 3 – deadlines – that’s pretty much the only thing that works for me.

Also, structure and routine – doesn’t exactly help with motivation, but at least helps with getting things done.

That’s a good point. I think keeping the structure and keeping up with the routine also requires motivation.

Accountability to other people is key for me. It’s not even about deadlines necessarily. If I have to report to my blog readers what books I’ve DNFed last month, I have to keep track of them! But deadlines don’t hurt. As long as they are externally enforced. I have no accountability to myself!

I feel like motivation is my “opp” as my daughter loves to say. I am constantly exhausted and feeling like I just can’t do one more thing. But, my biggest help is that I have a list of things that constantly need doing in a document (grading, class prep, cleaning a room in the house, writing a blog post, etc.) and I just set a timer for 15 minutes and work on whatever is next on the list. Sometimes I REALLY don’t feel like doing the next thing, so I will skip to another, but I force myself to do something. Usually, once I do one of those, I can move on and do another and sometimes I do a lot of them! Sometimes, I will stick with the one thing because it feels like I have momentum. The timer really helps though becuase I know I CAN stop after 15 minutes.

These are all good ways to get motivated. I keep a dry erase board on the kitchen wall and write things I need to do on it. By the end of the day, I want that board to be clear and empty. That’s my best motivation.

Hmm, what motivates me- fear? Like if I don’t keep up with my strength routines, my body will crumble to pieces. If I don’t do yoga my low back will explode. Your ideas are great.

I’d say I’m similar to Jenny in terms of what motivates me to workout – fear that I’ll feel lousy, or that my stupid medicine will make me gain weight. I like to stay ahead of that.

Other than that – I have a constant desire to get things done. I want things off of my to do list. There are days when I feel like, Why? Why do all the things, when there will just be more things tomorrow? But for the most part, I live in a world where I’m disillusioned enough to think that after I get all of these things done, I can . . . relax? Sit down? See friends?

I like the Do one thing idea. I’ve been trying to do that – clear off one pile of stuff from the counter. Or put away one bin of summer clothes that just needs a lid on it to go into the basement. The little things like that really do add up to a clear less cluttered space, which ultimately makes me happy.

I talk frequently about “tomorrow me” or “two hours from now me.” I’m so glad I’m getting this done, tomorrow me is going to be very appreciative. It really does help. And there are times I think back on “yesterday me,” with either gratitude or resentment, depending on what she did. 😉

Motivation is often fleeting – discipline is what counts! I also work well with deadlines. I am also very much motivated by other people (like you said, people who follow through and “do their thing” – it’s a positive feedback loop!)

This is such a thought-provoking question and lots of good answers in the comments! I think “future me” is the biggest motivator. I always want to set myself up for success in the future. And just living my values!
