Nothing glamorous and yet…

1. Exercise. I hate that it’s number 1 but it bloody works. Each time I do a short lifting session, do a treadmill run, go for a walk or do yoga- I feel better mentally. What I need to do is do this on a more consistent basis.

2. A tidy space. A clean kitchen, a swept floor, no shoes strewn around- some examples of how I feel better. Dishes in the sink, toothpaste in the bathroom sink and stuff all over the place has the opposite effect.

3. Alone time. I need to be more disciplined with giving alone time to myself. Solitude is healing to me.

4. Planning and looking ahead. Doing a brain dump and deciding what is truly essential and necessary alleviates my anxiety. I check my calendar multiple times a day, just to make sure I am not missing anything. Even if that is just blank space.

5. Laying off the phone. I hate the damn thing, and I wish I never got it. BIT I also, sadly, cannot live without it. I like google maps, and podcasts, and school updates. Blogging. Shopping. Banking.

Last weekend I took the kids to gymnastics and left my phone at home. By accident. knew how to get there so I don’t really needed it. I had my wallet.

During that hour and a half, I felt SO much calmer. I did have my kindle so I finished my book.

I am sure there are other things that help my mental health but the above are top five, I guess?

What about you? What positively impacts your mental wellbeing? What takes away from it?

This month I am participating in #NaBloPoMo2025. A running list of participants can be found on San’s NaBloPoMo page as well as more information about this lovely initiative on this NaBloPoMo page.

Pic on the front: skates! Also contributes very positively to my mental state.

Yes to all of these! I also hate that exercise is necessary, blah! But it really does wonders for my mental health. And time to myself and reading. I’d also add reaching out to friends because I tend to cocoon myself when I really need the support of people who love me.

Oh, yes to everything about #1 – so hard to get started, but amazingly effective. I would add time outside (similar to your #5, with disconnecting).

Exercise is also my Number 1. And alone time is a big one. I am an introvert and need time to recharge. I am also a planner like you. It’s good to write it all down.

Same with the phone. I love when I don’t have it with me but also feel like I need to have it with me (sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t and it’s all so confusing and hard to manage and I often feel very jealous of my parents’ generation who did not have to cart a phone around everywhere they went and be accessible at all times).

My #1 thing is time alone. It recharges my batteries like nothing else.

I also really like to tidy/clear spaces.

Reading a good book or watching a documentary.

    Naps.

    Coffee/tea.

Sitting down with my planner or paper and pen to write out lists or do a brain dump.

We have a lot of overlap!

I am with you on the phone. There are many days I deeply regret getting a smartphone nearly 10 years ago. Yet, I now live in a different country than my parents and sisters and the texting apps that allow for free international group texts are a wonderful way to stay connected. I am trying to accidentally on purpose leave it behind sometimes and am always glad when I do!

Exercise is up there, too, but it doesn’t need to be high impact. A long walk is probably the absolute best thing for my mental health. Time outdoors in nature is also very grounding for me. And I value both alone time as well as time connecting with good friends. I love being alone but then my brain can start to fixate on things, so to get outside of my head, being around others is optimal!

Yes, to all of these. Exercise is an absolute must. Same with time alone. I don’t keep things as clean as I should, but when I do tidy up I feel so much better.

I thought I commented yesterday, but I see that I didn’t. Our night was a unexpectedly distressing last night. Things that help my mental health – exercise is my number 1. I rarely skip. Also a good night sleep. I suppose eating healthy, but I do enjoy a treat and I eat healthy more to fit in my clothes than for my mental health. Organizing a space in my house probably helps, but it’s the last thing I bother to do. I find writing very cathartic.

Amen to all the items on your list. I also weirdly like to do spreadsheets and data to alleviate anxiety.

I’m a huge fan of everything on your list (especially #1 and #5). For me I would also add reading and being outside. I find listening to birds and looking at clouds in the sky really calming.

I agree with you on all of these things, except I do love my phone, even if it can sometimes be a big time waster. I just love the ease of being able to do just about anything I need to on it.
