1. Its size. I grew up in an apartment building (think block of Stalinist flats) in Russia so having space is important to me. My husband is the same. He is also 6’2” and has hobbies that require stuff (i.e. models). We have about 3500 square feet: more than plenty for a family of four.

This Halloween

2. Its style. A white colonial, with black shutters and a red door. It has symmetry. Not sure why but it was important to me to have a visually appealing house.

Winter

3. The street it’s on. Our block has a lot of trees and families with similar age kids! We definitely lucked out. Both of my next door neighbors on either side are great people whose kids come over to play on the regular.

Buddies

4. The surrounding plot of land. New Jersey is a densely packed state, and it can be rare to have a big yard, especially in our area (central Jersey). We have a big front yard and a bit of a “woodsy” area in the back. Like, jungle. It’s just forest but it’s nice to have that area. The kids play hide and seek and build fairy houses.

Into the woods, summer
More woods, fall

5. The price we paid for it and our interest rate. Don’t want to get materialistic but we bought this house back in 2014 and locked in a great interest rate. The price was more than fair, considering the size of the house and the fact that the prior owners really needed to sell. Since then, this property more than doubled in value. The house and the surrounding property continues to be a very valuable asset for me and my husband.

Now. Not all is bright and rosy. We are talking about real estate, after all.

The house is rather old- 1933. It can be drafty. Not very insulated and not very “green” when compared to more modern homes. It needs care, and love, and money. It takes a long time to clean due to its size.

Things break, things need to be replaced. We have already invested a lot into it: central air, a new kitchen, new Sheetrock downstairs, a new guest bathroom upstairs, and other projects.

And we still have a loooooong list of projects that we would like to complete (finish the basement, finish the attic, re-do the garage floor, widen the driveway, etc).

Your turn! What do you like/dislike about your house?

This month I am participating in #NaBloPoMo2025. A running list of participants can be found on San’s NaBloPoMo page as well as more information about this lovely initiative on this NaBloPoMo page.

I have always admired your house. It is gorgeous and I love how you’ve designed things. The exterior looks like something straight out of a movie. What a great place for your kids to grow up, and I can see why you appreciate all the extra space (both inside and out)!

My residence has the advantage that I can work out by walking up and down the stairs.

Compared with writing down what I dislike about my residence, I find that I’m actually in a better mood when I’m taking actions to fix the things that I dislike about my residence.

You have such a beautiful home. and with that neighborhood besides, I can see why you love it! For me, I love the location of my home. I’m within walking/biking distance to the beach, shopping, and restaurants. I love the layout of my home too, but it’s getting old, has been hit by several hurricanes, and really needs a complete renovation inside and out which unfortunately I can’t afford to do.

Your house is so charming. I love that style of architecture. Ours is sort of similar. But ours is a bit smaller at 2400 sq ft including our basement. Ours was built in 1925 so she turned 100 this year! It was significantly remodeled back in 2008, so well before we bought it in 2019.

    Favorite things:
    – ours is paid off. This is a privilege but something we prioritized.
    – our block is wonderful and we are close to many great walking and biking paths!
    – I love that we have a guest room with an en-suite bathroom in the basement
    – I like that there are 3 bedrooms and 2 baths in the upper level (one is in the primary bedroom).

    Least favorite things:
    – we are at the top of a giant hill so our back yard is sloped. And we have a corner lot so Phil has to shovel/snow blow a corner lot on a hill. It sucks.
    – we don’t have a foyer or entrance – the front door opens into our living room which we both dislike.
    – our fence and retaining wall need to be replaced. They look terrible but it will be such an expensive project! And not do anything for the value of our house.
    – we have a very small alley garage. It is a tight squeeze to get 2 cars in it.

It took us 2 years to find this house, though. It was so hard to find something that didn’t need significant renovations, had a main floor powder room and a 2 car garage. Since the homes in our neighborhood were mostly built in the early 1900s, it was hard to find a house with those 3 must haves!

Oh Daria, your house is a dream (from the outside) and you have 3500 sq ft. Wow. that is a lot of space. I am glad you were able to snatch this up at a good time with a good interest rate.

I’ve always loved the pictures of your home. I agree with others who said it looks like it came straight out of a Hallmark movie. I have to admit that I especially love the wooded area in the back. You are in a neighborhood but that area makes you feel like you are outside the city. I love it.

I can’t say that I love my house. I do love the price and the interest rate as well when I bought it, which was the end of 2017. I love the large fenced in back yard. I could do with more trees, but then I would have too much shade and couldn’t have my garden. It was important at the time to have a large space for my grandson and dog to run and play. I also love the open concept, as soon as I walked in during an open house I knew this was the place. I love having family and friends over for holidays and special occasions, but I do spend a lot of time in the kitchen. I wanted a place where everyone could gather and not feel left out.

Well, I can see why you love it – it is gorgeous! And what a yard!!!

I love my home too. I love that we have space for things like a garden (a few gardens), I love that I have closet space and a pantry, and three bathrooms! We were 23 years in our little bungalow, so I enjoy having the extra room.

I love my 1912 American foursquare with all my heart. But it’s old and needs some renovation. Someday it will be perfect, right?

Your house is gorgeous! It’s such a classic design of American architecture.

Your house and yard look beautiful!!!! The winter look in the snow is simply gorgeous. And the woods in the back yard – magic!

Our home is a mid-century split-level. When we were looking for our house, we were hoping for something historic with character and I swore I would never buy a split-level, but… here we are 🙂

Love: location (we are near a state park, short drive into town, and an easy commute into Philly), neighborhood (lots of trees, quiet, and no HOA), large-ish property (we fell in love with the backyard: there are trees, a stream, plenty of room for garden/fruit trees/berry bushes), size of home (plenty of room for 5 people but not too big), fireplace, large deck in the back that’s shaded by strategically planted trees (thank you, original owners!) where we like to eat al fresco from late spring to early autumn.

Don’t love: no sidewalks in our neighborhood, can’t walk to town, dependency on car; 2 of the bedrooms are very small; lack of style/furniture that don’t quite fit (because we just plonked down whatever we owned when we first moved in – and then were too busy to figure out what would work better).

Your house is BEAUTIFUL and I love all the yard you have. But, yes- houses require a LOT of upkeep. There’s always something going on, right?

i love how our house is close to the kids’ schools (they could walk to elementary school) and that we have places to run. When the kids were little I liked having a pool, but now it’s just another thing to keep up, and it requires a lot of work. I like how our street is pretty quiet!

I love your house, plenty of space for a family, and lots of outdoor area. I loved having a decent garden when the kids were younger because I could send them outside when they were ratty. Now I love our apartment because it is quick to clean, easy to leave for travel, it has a good size garden that isn’t so large it’s hard to look after, it is only 500m to the beach and I can walk to most things I need.

Your house is beautiful! I love that style, beautiful setting, how wonderful.

our house is low set brick, very practical, built in 1980. It’s not that pretty, but it is well built. It’s on an acre of mostly forest, so it’s a beautiful setting, we wake up to a soundtrack of rainforest bird sounds. We have privacy, and live on a quiet cul de sac, where a lot of neighbours know each other. It has tiled floors which keep the rooms cool, and timber ceilings which I love.
things I don’t love is the maintenance, the forest is always trying to take over, they septic and grey water needs management. I don’t love that everything is dated and will need an overhaul, that we only have one bathroom, and that it’s cramped.

I’m backing up to this post, because the photo of your house caught my eye. It’s so very pretty. When I was little, we drove thru a nearby town often. Huge homes. We always announced which house we liked the best, and I always chose the house with symmetry. We go to that same town now and I always point out that house to my kids. They’re like, I know, I know, you liked it because it had matching windows on each side. Ha.

Our house is spacious. The kid rooms are huge, and that’s what sold us, because we had 6 kids and we knew our kids were gonna have to share a room. I like the floorplan too. We have a 3 car garage and it faces the side of the house, which I prefer. We redid the kitchen and put on an addition to it in 2017, which has been a game changer. That was the only part of the house that didn’t seem to match the rest of the house’s size/spacious feeling. We are also walking distance to church and to my parents’ house and they are elderly.

I’m so glad you love your street. It makes a big difference. Having kids right on your street and a nice yard – really awesome.

I always love seeing photos of your home – it’s just postcard-perfect. Look at that winter scene!

We don’t have many older homes in my area, so I love walking around a home with floors and stairs that creak, haha.

Daria… your house is beautiful!! Especially with all that space! It was 20 years ago, but when we lived in NJ, we had a condo and no private yard space at all.

I love our current house (an architect-designed passive-solar gem with huge skylights so I can tend to all my plants).

Your house looks so gorgeous. And I totally get the syymetry thing, I love the black and white too. And how great to have some woods in the back.

I have never lived in a house. So I have this romantic wish to do so but every time I realistically think about it I prefer the apartment.

In my apartment I like the big terrace, the layout of our home and the materials used. I hate the kitchen though as it has shitty appliances and eggshell colored. We asked to change a few things as it wasn’t build in when we rented it and were willing to pay the extra amount but they wouldn’t even consider it. Sigh. It’s an eyesore.
