The week of the final exams is upon us!

My students are taking their final assessments, in all of their classes. They only come in the morning, take their two final exams, and leave. Teachers stay to grade the exams, clean up classrooms, and wrap up the school year. This whole week, in the afternoons, the school is quiet. I like it.

Russia trip is coming up. In total I am going for 11 days, not counting the travel. With travel days, it’s four more days on top of that. So two weeks total.

Flying through Türkiye, having an overnight stay in Istanbul, there and back. Trying to put a positive spin on this very unexpected, expensive, long and anxiety-producing trip.

In Istanbul, I have about 24 hours before leaving for Moscow. My hotel has a cool name – Dream Bosphorus, named after the canal and the continental boundary. I’ll be on the European side of Istanbul.

Coming back from Russia, I also have a long layover in Istanbul and my hotel in on the Black Sea, and not in Istanbul. A different location but closer to the airport.

In Russia, I will be renting a car and renting an apartment. I could stay with my mom and brother but, as many of you know, my relationship with mom is volatile, my brother works a lot, so it’ll be better for everyone if I have my own place. It’ll be better for my mental health.

Of course, I will be going to the hospital to visit dad probably every day?.. Chelyabinsk has a lot of lakes around it so maybe I’ll visit a few, just to spend some time in nature.

Ever since I got the news about my dad’s stroke, life has been NON-stop.

R’s jiu jitsu, the end of the year at my school, L’s piano recital, and R’s graduation from preschool. Father’s Day and our anniversary are also coming up. My sister-friend H’s birthday is June 20th so we will have an informal gathering.

Last weekend was all about planning the Russia trip, booking tickets, apartment, and car. Comparing prices. Things got complicated when I could not use my American-issued credit card to pay for my Istanbul-Chelyabinsk ticket. No Visa or Master card in Russia! Thanks to some folks on the Internets, I was advised to use a website that is .com versus .ru and my payment worked! Example: Aviasales.com vs aviasales.ru.

I can keep on babbling about this trip but it’s getting late…

Haircut before the graduation ceremony tomorrow

A new blush from Patrick Ta: you can see me from a mile away 🤣

LAST SCHOOLS STANDING! WE GOT THIS! Good luck with the travel. It sounds like so, so much and I’m sure the planning took so much time and energy and emotion. I hope it goes off without a hitch.

What a hectic time. I am so sorry it all comes together like this. And travel plans out of necessity are never fun. I hope the traveling goes smoothly and you have a meaningful and good time with your dad and family in Russia. I just had to google Chelyabinsk because I am ignorant. pictures of the city look beautiful. I hope you have some nice moments and small pockets of joy.

What a busy, exhausting time of year and I’m sure your dad’s health challenges are hanging like a bit of a shadow over a time that usually feels like a bit of a relief (to have reached the finish line on a school term).

It’s clear you’re making the right decision to go and visit him, and I hope there are many rays of sunshine – literally and figuratively – along the way. Sending hugs, my friend ❤

    Also, that haircut is PRECIOUS!

Thank you so much for your kind words, as always. I know the trip will be hard and long, but I just want no issues travel-wise and logistics-wise. I feel like I have planned/outlined all the moving parts… But in Russian we have a proverb: “a person is planning and God is laughing.”

It’ll be a relief to be done with school as you have so much else to focus on. You’re a well-prepped teacher, so I hope assessments don’t require a ton of your energy now.

Sending you off with best wishes!

Love the fresh haircut look! What a cutie! I can see how this is a highly anxious time for you. I hope all of your travels go smoothly. I am glad you will have your own space while visiting your dad. A Russian friend I worked with years ago at Wells Fargo is from the same city as you so reading this made me think of my old friend, Yulia!

Oh wow! I have met other people from Chelyabinsk, but just like… Two?… it’s a rather big city. I will have a car so I’m hoping to go to one/a couple of lakes close to Chelyabinsk… I made a list of hikes/mountains/lakes nearby.. just o have it. If my dad can be visited only for about one hour, then what to do with the rest of the time?…

There were some issues with my credit cards in Türkiye as well, like when I booked a train trip, I had to do it through a travel agent, and pay them through Paypal rather than use my US card on their website. It feels kind of weird and is very frustrating! I hope that your travels go as well as they can and that your night in Istanbul is a nice reprieve before you hit the ground running!

What a time Daria! Good you’ve got it all planned now, and you managed it during a busy time with the kids and end of school year. Well done. Glad you’ll have your own space in Russia, and good idea to get out in nature a bit while you’re there. Thinking of you over the next few weeks.
