Last night my daughter goes: “mom, my favorite day is Sunday.” Me: “why is that, honey?” L: “on Sundays we wake up and there is no gymnastics, no piano, we can do whatever.”

She is right. We can do whatever.

Except I am not that good with “whatever.”

Mornings with R

Sunday started typically- my morning with my son, coffee, and transformers conversation.

I then drove to meet Maya from PocoBrat in on of the NJ towns. Over an omelette and some eggs in a typical NJ diner, we talked higher ed, teaching, kids, careers, hobbies, childhoods… I honestly wished she lived closer.

I shared with her that I was nervous prior to our meeting since Maya is a university professor, and her blog is very cerebral, so I had felt insecure. Would I measure up?.. 🙂

The moment we met and hugged I could put all of that aside. What a warm, compassionate, amazing person. In Russian culture, we call people like that “golden” people.

Upon return home, I wanted to finish feeding the roses and shrubs. My little gardening assistant helped.

Gardening assistant

The flower bed by the side of the house looks better- it’s been cleared, roses planted, then cleared some more. It is still very much a work in process, as I still will need to mulch. But it looks cleaner and more civilized.

What a lovely Sunday! And you got to meet Maya! AMAZING! I had a very quiet Sunday and totally could have joined you (were I not 3,000 miles away). Maybe next time.

It is nice to set aside time where you have no responsibilities! However, I personally like to have a good mix. But I do remember many a summer day when I was a kid where I just sat and read my book a lot (I also worked in the summer but man those book reading times were golden). Maybe this is just from the outside, but it feels like kids now do not have a lot of down time (is that correct, or just perception?); there seem to be a lot of sports, homework, flute, etc…. and I feel like as a parent I would be exhausted! My friend is a single Mom and I used to go a couple of days a week to shuttle kids, make them dinner etc. but even my couple of days felt busy! I had to go home and read my book after that!

Oh you are 100% correct- the kids are tremendously over-scheduled these days. We “only” do two activities per kid (my son- BJJ and gymnastics, my daughter- piano and gymnastics) but I know someone closely whose kids are in five different things. Even those two things we do seem like a lot sometimes. Not sure how we will proceed and want to do things. Right now they do things because -well- we signed them up.

How fun that you got to meet Maya! I’m so glad. ❤

Unscheduled days are nice but probably a little more tiring when you have young kiddos, as you have to figure out ways to keep them entertained!
