On Friday was my actual birthday so I brought an ice cream cake to school and had it with my first class. The students sang to me – that was so stinking cute! They gave me a card signed by the whole class, a party hat, a necklace that said “happy birthday” and a chair cover that looked like a cake with candles. The chair cover did not fit over MY chair but I will definitely use it for students’ birthdays!

Cake with students. When DQ people asked what I want written on it, I hesitated. Then went with happy birthday and my title+last name since that’s what students call me.

On Saturday I didn’t do much but that not much were things I like: I worked on a puzzle for a while, then went to the library and picked up one of my holds, wrote in my journal, did yoga, and read. Oh, went to a nail salon with L! We also replaced our old, rotted playground with a trampoline – such happiness!

Here they are: airborne!

On Saturday night we had dinner with my husband and my three sister friends. The restaurant was near a (man-made) lake, I had soft-shell crab, and I felt so special being surrounded by the people I love.

On Sunday we took it easy. It has started to rain, a few of our neighborhood kids came over to play. The my Russian friend K stopped by for some tea and cake.

In between all of that I worked on my puzzle, napped and read my book. And picked up our weekly grocery order. I think after I finish this 500 piece puzzle I’m gonna take a break. I hang up on it and just keep going, while I need to go to bed. You can see the other puzzle hanging on the wall in the picture below- I framed it!

Puzzle #1 is hanging on the wall, Puzzle #2 is in process. Both puzzles are from the Longwood Gardens.

On Sunday night I was really peopled out so I crawled into bed early to recover. Read my book “How to Winter” by Kari Leibovitz. Since I think I have seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and that book has been on my hold list since… November of last year? It makes sense since that’s when I usually feel most down- after the daylight savings time change.

The book is good but much of it is common sense.: reframe your mindset toward winter, get outside, prepare.

This week… is teacher appreciation week so I am celebrating all of my colleagues out there. It’s not easy but we got this. 💪

Also this week is a sick day for me to care for R who has a stomach issue. It’s L’s spring concert. And Mother’s Day on Sunday (a heavy holiday for me since I am estranged from my mother).

Happy Belated Birthday, you did some wonderful celebrating! I haven’t had soft shell crab in years…you don’t see it on menus out here nearly as much as the East Coast.

I hope you enjoy Mother’s Day with your kids. It’s complicated for so many of us. I’m sorry your relationship with your mom is so fraught.
