We left New Jersey on Sunday morning, and after about 4 stops in different states we arrived on Chincoteague (pronounced cheenkoteegh) island. There is Assateague and Chincoteague part of this nature reserve. We were on the Chincoteague side in Virginia. Assateague entrance is in Maryland and we didn’t go to there.

Chincoteague, VA

The reserve itself is breaktakingly beautiful. Part saltwater marsh, part pine forest, and part mixed woods. So many birds, just so picturesque. Pictures don’t really portray the experience. Weather- wise it was a mild 50-60 degrees. I had to wear my jacket.

A cold Chincoteague beach!
As expected😃and 😫

When we first arrived, we checked in, then went out to check out the reserve. The reserve was outstanding. It was kind of late – 4pm- so we spent an hour on the beach (cold) and hiked a trail next to the marsh. Dinner was Mr. Baldy for seafood. Leftovers lasted us three days.

The next day we did another hike at the reserve, in the morning, then had breakfast and headed out to North Carolina.

Beautiful! I always think of Chincoteague as having the ponies, but I guess they’re on Assateague. Could you see any from the shore? What a lovely place.

I think you’re going to Longwood Gardens, right? Or Kennett Square? If you’re around that area Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, my friend has a lovely little independent bookstore you might enjoy. It’s in the Gather Vintage Marketplace, on Ridge Road in Chadds Ford. Alas, she is in Europe at the moment and won’t be there, but I think the store is still open!

This looks like a beautiful place! I’ve never been to that area, so it’s fun to read about your experiences.

Daria, this looks amazing. I love her dress, by the way. And I have lots of pictures like that of my kids; in fact, we were just discussing two times when one sibling was in tears and the other had a HUGE grin just this morning at the breakfast table.

Love the red coat. You have such an incredible sense of style ❤

What wonderful memories you’re making. I regret all the Spring breaks I used to just catch up on grading!

Chicoteague! This just makes me think of the book (or series? I can’t remember), Misty of Chincoteague. Now I want to reread that because I have such a strong memory of loving it when I was a kid.
