I don’t write about politics because much of it I simply don’t understand, and am not articulate enough to present my views in a smart way. But I need to say that that meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy was embarrassing to watch.

This post is a highlight reel. But, looking back at February, I see that there were some not-so-good-things: political situation, anxiety, hot flashes, fatigue, busyness, stressful jaw clenching, neck problems, parenting anger. All of that is part of life and, it’s going away any time soon. My dad fell. Nothing is broken but his face is all bruised up. He is 80, they had a “celebration” at work. In Russian terms, lots of alcohol was involved.

  1. T’s 44th birthday. A giant heart for my partner in life.
  2. Started physical therapy for my hormonal headaches and “teacher neck” (apparently, it’s a thing among educators)
  3. The kids continued with their activities: gymnastics every Saturday, jiu jitsu every Tuesday or Thursday, piano lessons). Nobody got sick, no lessons were missed. Oh, and, let’s not forget my little Plushenko over here (he is far from being Plushenko, but in my mind…). For reference, Evgeny Plushenko is one of the greatest Russian male skaters in history.
  4. Saw sister friends once. Met one of my sister friends’ significant other.
  5. Had a snow day from school!
  6. Saw a Broadway Show
  7. Celebrated Valentine’s Day (cards and chocolates all around). What can I say, we love it!
  8. Submitted my SGOs. For those of you not in education field, it’s a procedure to prove that you, as a teacher, doing your job, and is part of your summative evaluation at the end of the year. To me, it’s ridiculous, but you have to gather the data and show students’ growth. *By the way, they are going away next year – thanks to NJEA (our teachers’ union).
  9. NECTFL in NYC – amazing, incredible world language educators sharing their best practices. And, of course always great to be in NYC.
  10. Parent-teacher conferences for both kids. L attended for L, and T attended for R.
  11. Yoga continued – two to three times a week. Sadly, many of you know that my studio is closing in March.
  12. Registered L for her favorite summer camp in July, at the reservation. She’ll be there for two weeks before we go [back] to France.

A photo from February:

March

March is a long month: 31 days. BUT: in New Jersey, the weather is warmer, the sun is shining, and it’s St. Patrick’s day! I am Russian but I LOVE St. Patrick’s day. So… Upcoming things in March…

  1. Three theater performances! Kodo (alone), and Irish dance (with L or R, not sure yet), and Dear Evan Hansen (with T).
  2. Daylight savings. Uffff, we have state testing the Monday after, and we will all be fried but, at least, it will be light out in the morning.
  3. International Women’s Day – March 8th. I always get flowers for the babushkas (baba Tanya+baba Lyuba) in our lives, and my kids’ teachers.
  4. T is away for one week, so, solo parenting.
  5. St. Patrick’s day. Green ice cream and corned beef and cabbage. Soda bread.
  6. Read Across America for L- a week where you get to dress up with what you want – animal print day, mismatched clothes day, etc. Always fun.
  7. Yoga studio’s last day is March 16th. After the closing, I will either a. have to sign up for something else, or b. use a Peloton app.
  8. Kindergarten registration for R! My baby boy is going to kindergarten in September.

In a nutshell, how was your February? And, what are you looking forward to in March?

A long list of awesomeness in short February and shorter list in long March… I hope lots of lovely things get added as March marches on Daria :). I love that you give out flowers on International Women’s Day… I host a tea party at my college.

I love the photo of you with neon wings! It sounds like February was good and busy, and you have lots to look forward to in March! I understand completely about not feeling comfortable posting about politics, and I’m the same. But I agree with you, that meeting was embarrassing to watch. I’m envious of your Irish Dance theater performance coming up! What fun!

My brother-in-law and his family came to visit us in February and it was definitely a highlight. We had a lot of adventures! I’m hoping March has more adventures in store. I think I’m going to start writing my FIGs in my line-a-day journal so that I don’t forget to look for those adventures in daily life.

Politics is hard to write about because it’s such a shit show and it never seems to end nowadays. There is always something horrible and unbelievable going on. UGH.

Jaw pain for me is related to stress, I grind my teeth at night. I guess I need to get my mouth guard out.

I’m not looking forward to the time change either. I take a morning walk before work in the mornings, and it is going to be dark again for a little while until we catch up again. The light afternoons will be nice though.

I’m sorry that your yoga studio is closing. It sounds like you will have a lot of things to look forward to, especially the theater performances.

I’m looking forward to my daughter’s birthday, and to longer evenings, and hopefully California will get some more rain.

February seemed really short to me this year. Maybe because so much was happening? And then I was sick for half a week, so there went that time…. But all in all, it was just kind of blech.

I started registering my 5 year old for kindergarten (again… since she didn’t get in early last year… feels annoying to have to do all the paperwork again.) This time, the registration can all be done online – but I have to get all the medical paperwork and scan it and upload it – seems like a lot of work. Though, is it more work than just walking it over to the school?

I’m looking forward to getting a lot of life admin done in March so that I have it off my plate when I start back up at rehearsals in April.

Ugh, kindergarten registration… I remember for L, I was so diligent uploading everything, and, when I showed up to the appointment, they did not have ANYTHING. Good thing I had all the papers with me. But yay for tuition free schooling!!

That’s so interesting that you mentioned “teacher’s neck” (what are your symptoms?). I think you’re right that it’s pretty common among educators… my sister (an elementary school teacher) has neck issues ALL THE TIME. I hope you’ll get some relief.

Happy birthday to T! And happy International Women’s Day!

Happy March 8th to you, too, San!
My symptoms were migraines, and dull ache right at the bottom of my skulls, where the neck connects to the head. Especially around my cycle. Since starting PT, I noticed a big difference. I am still not finished, not sure how many more times I have to go..
