A few days ago, I sat down and sketched out February of 2025 and looked back on January of 2025.

January was a month where I felt the need to look within.. It felt like a long month, and I yearned for introspection, coziness, and alone time.

A few general highlights:

~ a few long stretches of cold weather in New Jersey

~ R’s 5th birthday

~ annual physicals (me, L, and R)

~ some dental work for T

~ got serious about budgeting (paid for Monarch). It’s been excellent.

~ instituted family meetings (but only had one. ha.)

~completed my habit tracker (I have my mornings back, yesss)

~ went to a Korean spa with L!

~ went to a monster jam with R!

~ kept up with gymnastics, piano, and Brazilian jiu jitsu (for the kids)

~ kept up with yoga and meditation (for me)

~ the end of the marking period at my job

~ a date with T (after many months of not being able to find a sitter).

~ instituted a chore/attitude chart for the kids

What I am not satisfied with: we did not celebrate Lunar New Year the way I wanted to (no Asian food, no theater performance, no craft). Although I am Russian, my city is on the Asian part of Russia, and Lunar New Year is celebrated every year in Russia due to having a big Asian population there. I have very good memories of those celebrations when I was little.

I want the Wooden Snake to be kind to us all! Apparently, 2025 will look for flexibility, rebirth, connection to nature (the wood element), insight, shedding the old and the toxic and welcoming the new.

Out of all the pictures in my camera roll for January I am sharing this one:

One of the great swamp hikes

February Things to Look Forward To:

T’s 44th birthday (restaurant reservation and sitter confirmed)

A day off for President’s day

A professional day on 02-14 , no students, just colleagues

Appointments: chiropractor and gyn

Redwood the musical in NYC! (still need to see if sitter can stay with the kids till 1 in the morning).

Spirit week for L (crazy hair day, 100th day of school, etc)

Skates for R start mid month

A sister-friend H’s get together

Valentine’s Day (chocolates for everyone but especially ME)

Parent-teacher conferences for L and R

World language conference in NYC for me, for three days. Hotel was booked through T who has points through the loyalty program.

How is your February looking?

My February is going to be quiet I think. We also have not yet celebrated Lunar New Year, but it is a long celebration, and I think it is NOT too late. I may try to incorporate some of that into my week, too. It’s the year of the snake, and I’m a snake, so I should go for it.

Happy New Year! My husband is the Year of the Snake and I’ve heard that when it’s your year it’s very auspicious but you also have to be careful. I heard this on a podcast, I don’t really know much about it. The podcaster, who is from China, mentioned that in China there is always a mini baby boom in the Year of the Dragon, isn’t that interesting?

Hi Daria! I’m glad you have nice memories of celebrating Lunar New Year as a child. I hope the year of the snake will turn out to be a good one. It sounds like you have some fun things planned in February! My February is looking snowy and quiet, and I love that!

SO many fun things for you to look forward to in short February! Have a wonderful conference–I’m glad you’re staying rather than commuting.

I love that conference, the teachers that present are all creme de la creme, with some excellent and relevant presentations.

I grew up in Hong Kong and LOVED Lunar New Year. Actually, Lantern Festival was my favorite, but Lunar New Year was a close second. And yet I have never done much for it with my kids. I’m sad for that. I love that you usually do something. I will try to remember for next year.

I love that February has some fun stuff to look forward to. I can’t wait to hear all about it!
