This week was packed. Work, yearly physicals for both kids, yoga, morning hour, end of the marking period… It was a lot.

Also, luteal phase. Tired and cranky. I am feeling run down. Am I not getting enough sleep? I am in bed at 8 the latest, and I’m up around 4:30. That’s 8 and a half hours of sleep. I don’t feel sick (no cough, no stuffy nose, no fever) but just blahhh.

My daughter (7 y.o) declared she has not been eating lunch at school since she “doesn’t like it anymore.” Me: panic mode, she is not eating at school!! The result: a new thermos for hot lunch, and a grocery spree mid week to get her lunch stuff.

Her and I “collaborated” on this: she told me what specific foods she likes and I got them for her. Her “main” meals are a. hot leftovers (pasta, or kotlety, or soup in her new thermos) or b. a cold meal (prosciutto or mortadella on a piece of a bagel).

In her lunch box, we will have a main meal (see above), and a few other items that could serve as snacks. Not all at once of course! Pistachios, berries, clementines, apples, dates and dried apricots, yoghurt, and maybe even a treat (a small piece of chocolate). She promised me that she will eat her main meal first :] Water to drink.

Why does this feel significant?… I’ve never had to pack lunch for any of my kids since they have always received lunch and snack at their respective schools. In R’s preschool all kids regardless of income receive breakfast, lunch and snack. In L’s kindergarten we paid for school lunch, and now she is in 1st grade and she no longer likes it. Not a problem, we figured it out. She said she ate everything in her lunch box yesterday and today apart for a few scraps.

My big little boy at the MD’s office for his annual physical

R had his 5 year annual physical at the pediatrician! Answered all the questions himself, made conversation with the doctor about why she should consider playing with transformers, got two vaccines. Cried. Received some stickers.

At first I was going to bring him to his appointment after work, on Tuesday but then I took the day completely off. I have family sick days and that is what they are for- medical appointments or illnesses. I technically could have made it work by running out early, rushing to his preschool, grabbing him, and stepping on it on our way to the pediatrician. But no. I took off so I can pick him up normally and arrive to the doctor with plenty of time to spare.

Interestingly, my oldest also had her annual physical this week, except on Friday. She is perfectly healthy!

Annual physical for this big girl!

Daily habits are going… okay. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday- yoga! Morning routine is good- I am up at least one full hour before anyone else and do my meditation and journaling then. I misplaced my Kindle (AGAIN) so phone time is up since I was reading on it.

Almost two hours on Chrome… What was I doingggg???

Family year-in-review book arrived!! It’s thick! And a labor of love.

Things we did, big and small, all in one place.
Looked through the book and reminisced together

On my mind

I want to take a road trip for spring break. Longwood Gardens and… What else? Look at this place in Jarvisburg, North Carolina, right on the water! A night in Kennett Square for Longwood Gardens the drive down to NC for a few nights?

From Kennett Square, PA to NC

Fellow bloggers, I welcome any ideas. I will probably bring the kids, and have the whole week: April 11th till April 18th…

Delaware, Maryland, Washington, DC? But the school groups are in DC for spring break, too… I’d like to avoid crowds of school kids since I get a lot of them at work.

Pic on the front: a beet before I crushed it into smithereens for my borscht.

How was your week? Are you all over the place like me? Any plans for spring break this year?

We decided not to do anything for spring break this year. Instead, Phil and I are going on a couple trip with two other couples in late March. Last year we went to Destin, Florida with my parents and the trip was kind of a mess because my grandmother‘s health was declining while we were on vacation so my parents spent so much of that trip stressed out and on the phone with healthcare providers and family. I would’ve been willing to go somewhere, but Phil kind of had PTSD from the whole experience!

I’m no help on your potential spring break plans though as I haven’t been to that area of North Carolina. DC would be really fun, but I understand the concern about it being mobbed with school trips.

Paul’s lunch is free at school so he eats lunch there although it’s a mystery about what he actually eats. We just enrolled taco in the pre-K program there yesterday so he’ll start there in the fall. I’m so excited to have one drop off! School lunch is free for all children in the state of Minnesota, although I wonder if that is at risk as Democrats no longer have a majority and there’s been a lot of uproar from Republicans about paying for school lunch for all children. Grrrrrrrrr.

sorry about the school lunch situation. Maybe plan with her on a weekly rotation? what’s what I do, either rotation of things that they like or leftovers.

Well I’m biased about DC being a fun place for kids…

I will say there are school groups all the time in DC, so they are hard to avoid at certain museums. The Natural History Museum is always a zoo, it seems, but some wings get less traffic. The Air and Space Museum is now ticketed (still free) so it might not be bad. The thing about the Museums on the Smithsonian, though, is that they are all free, so you can duck in and out, and when you’re tired of being inside, there are lots of gardens and green areas on the Mall to sit and relax. The Zoo also isn’t too bad because it’s outdoors mostly. And April 18th is at the tail end of Cherry Blossom season – which is really beautiful, but also can be crowded, especially on a weekend. Weekday mornings are less crowded than you would think.

Baltimore also has a lot of really fun things for kids too – the Aquarium, Maryland Science Center, Port Discovery.

Anyhow, if you do come this way, let me know! I’ll tell you all the things we like to do :).

We’ve often done Longwood Gardens paired with The Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia when the kids were younger. One other time we did Longwood and Dutch Wonderland – I don’t know what Dutch Wonderland would be like in April, though.

The Husband and I went to Kitty Hawk once maybe 15 years ago and really liked it, though I can’t remember what we did. I’m sure we did some “First in Flight” type of activities.

My two younger kids pack lunch – except the 2nd grader gets to buy lunch once a week. I don’t think the school lunches are that good, to be honest, which is why I prefer to pack. They get the same thing almost every day, though – ham and cheese sandwich, half an apple sliced, five (or so) slices of cucumber, and a treat that they get to pick out. If we’re out of something, I feel a low level of panic at having to think of something else to put in their lunch. Packing lunch takes SO MUCH time!

I wish I had some guidance regarding where to go to avoid crowds, I doubt that is possible that time of year.

I love that you and your daughter collaborated on lunches. Nothing like getting buy in to help, right?

I love that book you created with family memories! What a lovely thing to do for yourself and your family.

We haven’t gone on a spring break trip since our kids were younger, and I miss it. I think it stopped in 2020 because of COVID, and then my oldest went off to college. I’ll enjoy seeing the pictures you take on your adventure. 💕

Yes – my week was very much all over the place. You got so much done!!! All the well-visits!!! The photo book is such a good idea – we need to do something like that…

About school lunches – honestly, I think packing can be a much healthier option, if you have the time. I have a weird dread of making lunches and an even more substantial dread of washing out lunch containers… My youngest packs her lunch 1-2 times a week (PB&J sandwich if we have good bread, or soup, or leftover pizza… also vegetables and fruit). The middle kids refuses to pack lunch but still complains about school lunches. The oldest kid has been bringing a bagel with cream cheese every single day – I thought it was a supplement to a lunch he buys at school, but turned out he stopped buying lunch… so I started packing him fruit in addition to bagel (he has this lunch&learn thing where he takes a class during his lunch period, and then he has track practices right after school, so he claims there’s not enough time to buy/eat school lunch, but he can wolf down a bagel pretty quickly during one of his classes). (He probably buys occasional treats with his own money if he and his buddies walk over to wawa after practice).

Road trip for the spring break – that sounds fun!!! I have a suggestion about a place that may be free of crowds but I don’t know if your kids would be into it or if it would be too out of the way. My father-in-law went there and thought it was amazing – but he loves old tools. It’s on my list to do with the family: https://www.mercermuseum.org/collections/mercer-museum/

Also, Brandywine/Chadds Ford area has an art museum (and some nature area surrounding it). It’s pretty close to the Longwood Gardens. https://www.brandywine.org/

There is also Brandywine Battlefield Park.

And Valley Forge National Historical Park (can learn about history and also plenty of space to run around and explore; good place for biking!).

Wow, thank you for all these wonderful ideas! I am yet to book a place… Kind of dragging my feet on it… Yeah, lunch has been tricky but on the inside I am happy she is eating better- I have seen school lunches and, well, they are not very tasty-looking
