Sunday, December 22. Today was Sunday, presumably a day of rest. Kids were up at 6AM, and that’s considered sleeping in for them. I had coffee while they hung out with me.

We then sorted school papers: from both R and L. I explained to L that work packets can all be let go since she already learned that stuff. But the pile is still too big. I will go through it again, weeding out only a few papers that will then go into their scrapbooks. The kids watched some TV while I did something… Don’t remember what. Reminding myself to NOT waste away these hours that I have.

Borscht and the Irony of Fate (a movie that is a cult classic in Russian culture)

After visiting my Russian friend and seeing all the wholesome Russian food they eat (I mean, her mom lives with them and does most of the cooking), I got inspired and made borsht! Borsht is known as beet soup, red soup, or a Ukrainian/Russian soup. It was not that difficult to make and it was oh, oh, oh, delicious. I made stock from beef bones hat served as a base for the soup. A taste of childhood.

Ready!

L’s friends came over to play. R was climbing walls since he wanted to play Star Wars, and the girls didn’t want to play that. I didn’t want to play Star Wars either. Shoots and ladders game, tiny dots math game, play dough, painting.

We do some screens, mainly good old TV, but we try, really try, not to lean too heavy on that. I am so tight-assed about screen time, I can’t help it.

In the evening, we made brownies. I ordered Christmas ornaments from 2017 till 2024 from shutterfly because… comparisitis.

Some painting
An army of play dough people
Not messy at all. Whew. I can stand behind that.

This post is part of my #winterbreak2024 blog post series, part personal writing challenge, part meditation on the mundane.

That soup looks so good! I love Borscht! Yum! I have never made it, though. I only order it in Russian restaurants.

We use screens a fair amount on the weekends to give myself a break to lay down. I don’t love it but I need the rest so badly so have relaxed some of my standards, especially in the winter when we can’t be out for super long stretches.
