We have 12 days home this year. With small kids. While it’s cold out.

Whenever I look back on winter break, it starts off good and then days start to blur one into another. This break is probably no different but I want to document, with very brief posts, what we did/didn’t do each day. Please forgive for populating your feed every day. It’s sort of a personal challenge. Think WiBrBloPoCh = winter break blog posting challenge.

December 21, Saturday. Kids were up early, at 5 AM (!!) and hung out with me for a while. It was snowing! At 6 AM, they were outside, roughing around in the snow. I was writing in my journal and asking myself “what should I do today to not fart away these precious free hours that I have?”

I went to yoga, T brought the kids to their gymnastics class. Afterwards, we stopped by my friend A’s house to play for a bit. Her mom is my second mom, a Russian lady that likes to cook and chat. Had tea and cookies there.

L then went to her piano lesson, while R *tried* taking a nap. Unsuccessful. So he got up, played, and we read Picturepedia together. I then while I worked on the Sisyphean task of putting away a mountain of clean laundry that we have had in the laundry room for at least two weeks. Success.

R made “shoes” for himself from Magna tiles

After that, we still had a few hours, so I got to vacuuming the upstairs. Finally. It’s been at least a month. R wanted to move his bed and he did, and put it by the window this time. More laundry was washed, and T vacuumed the downstairs.

We had a Yule party to go to in the evening (because yes, it WAS winter solstice!) organized by our friends in the neighborhood. Appetizers, some drinks, and good conversations. Tonight was the first and the last night I tried a manhattan. See, I usually stick to sweet, light wines, so I’m not used to. The first sip burned a hole in my esophagus. Our friends have kids of similar ages, so our kids were engaged the whole time. At some point I broke away from the crowd and started roaming their house which is so stylish, tasteful, and clean. Came back around 8:30, showers, bed. For everyone. I forgot my phone in the car overnight and felt so free.

I’ve never tried a manhattan and oofffff it was a rough drink 😳

I am not a hard liquor person either. Vodka is the only liquor I will drink. Anything else tastes awful to me! Pass! Give me my crisp sav blanc, thank you very much!!

We have a longer break that you guys – 2 full weeks out of school! The before/after care program provides cards for most non-school days. He’ll be there tomorrow and 3 days next week. Thank. God. I am glad we don’t have to burn PTO right now because it’s just not an ideal time to be away. Work tends to he quiet so I don’t mind working.

Good luck filling the days. Hopefully you can do lots of playdates to stay sane. For me the ideal situation is a morning outing and an afternoon outing and then we have some stretches of screen time or watch movies.

The fighting!!! Argh. Literally less than a day after winter break started my kids were at each other’s throats (almost literally, not quite).

    Sigh.

Today, our daughter was invited to go downhill skiing with a friend and I sent my son to a friend’s house. So…they’re both off screens, away from each other, having fun. A nice reprieve from the fighting.

Can’t wait to follow along with your daily updates ❤ I love these sorts of posts!

I love this, Daria! You write with such humor! I’ve never had a Manhattan – I’m not a hard liquor person either. I can imagine the burning sensation!!

I don’t think I had a Manhattan either. I rarely drink alcohol these days.
