I felt burnt out after NaBloPoMo so I took a few days break. But life continues, thoughts come and stay, needs and wants accumulate, and I need a space to pour them out. Right here.

Things I need to do soon-ish are:

Place a catering food order for L’s birthday party. It will be small (seven kids). She wanted it at her gymnastics place so that is what we booked. I tried to sway her since, in my humble opinion, a party at our house is so much better and cheaper. But no. Gymnastics place it is. Food will be catered from a local deli that delivers (yesss), and for drinks/juice boxes I will just go to Target. Also, some to-go containers because I know we will have leftovers. Maybe we can have people bring some food home?… Decorations are from the house, and will need to get a small cake, too. Her actual birthday was on Thanksgiving and we couldn’t do a party then.

Need to make a 3D (!) ginger bread person with R. That is part of their monthly home-to-school connection assignment. Just add it to the pile.

Some good things…

We decorated our artificial tree and put up lights above the fireplace. T also put a fake garland on the fence and a wreath on our door. We also have wreaths for windows but those can be hung up at a later date.

Little Santa!

L had her winter concert. Her 1st grade class sang “Frosty the snowman” and “Over the river and through the woods”- it was so lovely!! Then all of first grade and kinder classes sang “Hey, Winter!” as a culminating song.

Last night, L’s school has their annual Ginger Bread House party. In essence, students built ginger bread houses (made of wood) with mints, and jellies, marshmallows, M&M’s and chocolates. Everyone: kids, parents, teachers, admins, sat community-style at these long tables, built houses and listened to holiday music. I thought it was so well organized and very sweet. R, after gluing some candy on the outside of his gingerbread house, started putting it INSIDE the house. His own little secret stash, for later. So strategic.

See? Piling them in 🤣

I have stepped away from podcasts lately since I feel like podcasts are taking away from my audio book listening AND adding to my holiday anxiety. Gift lists, holiday stress busters, holiday planning, 2025 goal planning, gosh… I feel like I already do enough for the holidays; I don’t really need any more tips to make holidays magical for with each episode there is pressure to do more, buy more, see more. Lastly, with new episodes constantly popping up, my podcast queue is loooong and that makes me feel overwhelmed. The only podcast that I am staying true to this holiday season is SHU’s podcast, Best Laid Plans. Every Monday morning.

After stepping away I listened to three audio books. Nine Inches by Tom Perrotta was his short story collection. My favorite was “The Test Taker” and “Nine Inches”. Small Like Things Like These by C. Keegan was a short audio book about a coal-deliverer William who delivers coal to a monastery and meets one of the many Irish orphans. Lastly, American Housewife by H. Ellis was the second short story collection. Many, many favorites here: “Dead Doormen”, “The Wainscoting War” , “The Fitter”.

I gave up on The Change, it grabbed me first, then lost me. Also, I am giving up on Come and Get It. On page 20 and not liking it.

Very tired kids last night, after the Ginger bread event

We have not had any at home projects for Paul. Taco is still in daycare so they are out of the question for him too. I am happy about this. I am the least crafty person so making a 3D gingerbread man would annoy me! The gingerbread project at L’s school looks cute!

Paul woke up sick this morning and tested positive for strep. But he will bounce back fast and we back at school tomorrow. He got the penicillin shot which works so quickly but is a very painful shot. He won’t take oral meds though so it’s our only option. We need to work on teaching him to swallow pills because eventually he will be dx’d with something that can’t be treated with penicillin.

I’ll be in NJ next week but do not worry about trying to see me since I know you are so busy with the holidays and end of school things! I will be back 3 times next year. I already have 10 trips booked for 2025… and 3 more will be booked soon. Sigh.

OMG I do hope Paul feels better!! Ugh, when do these sicknesses stop?? In high school, I still see kids coughing, sneezing, and having snotty noses… So, it stops when they move out??…

    Those gingerbread houses look amazing!

Gingerbread man in 3D: maybe clay? or chunks of bagel/bread and toothpicks?

I am not crafty at all, and typically don’t enjoy it, but the couple of times kids needed to do crafty projects for school, I admit I ended up enjoying them. But – the kids did most of the work and I didn’t care if things weren’t perfect. I was more of a financial (art supplies) and moral support.

I also needed a break after NaBloPoMo. I hated school projects that required input from parents, and I wasn’t even trying to fit in full-time work as well. No thank you. I did craft with the kids but I prefer my choice of project on my timeline. It seems like you’ve had some lovely Christmas celebrations already with yuor children. I hope your week of solo parenting goes smoothly.

Haha. We made one and it looks hideous… Maybe I can delegate this to T- he is a maker in our family!!

Awww – I love little kids performing in concerts! So precious!

I hope the party planning is going well! It’s so funny to me that you would prefer a party at home — to me, it’s so much better to have a party at a place that will host all the guests and do most of the prep work and clean up! But I know I’m in the minority in that opinion.

Oh I know, I am the same, agree 100% but L was adamant to have it at the gymnastics place… I could have pressed on and put my foot down but not the hill I wanna die on. So, gymnastics it is!

Solo parenting is hard. And it seems like you do it a fair amount. Your kids are so cute. Thanks for sharing them here. I actually started this post ON FRIDAY! and never sent it. I’m so scattered these days. I’m sorry I don’t comment here ofter enough, but I always read! Oh, and I’ve been listening to the ADHD Hyperfocus mix a ton! Thanks so much for that recommendation.

    Candy INSIDE. That’s genius :)!

Stepping away from podcasts seems like it came with its own reward and that’s genius too!

It has been a minute since I found time for blog reading. Sorry for having missed so much.

Also very sorry you had to give up on The Change. I loved that book so much.
