Just listened to Laura Tremaine’s “10 things to tell you” episode 245 and I want my morning routine back.

I used to have a very rigid morning routine called “The Golden Hour.” I would be up at 3:30, read, have coffee, write three pages free hand (The Artist’s Way morning pages), meditate, do yoga, plan the day, and be completely ready to go by 6:30AM.

I miss the feeling of accomplishment that routine gave me.

Right now I am up at around 5:30 and that is when R is up, too, sooo…It goes more like this: up at 5:30, go downstairs, make coffee, make breakfast for R, and sometimes even L, scroll, talk to T briefly, get ready, and it’s 7AM. My contractual time is at 7:30 so I have to be out of the door by 7AM.

Can I get back to 4AM wake ups? I used to love them, then I got lazy.

Will try tomorrow. You can hold me accountable!

I want the routine to look something like this. And my phone should not be anywhere NEAR me during that time.

1. silence: 5 minutes

2. morning pages: 10 minutes

3. reading: 20 minutes

4. weights: 10 minutes

5. meditation: 10 minutes

Sounds doable, right? I will let you know if I can do it. Wish me luck.

4 am sounds like the opposite to doable to me. Good luck!

Oh that is so early, but it is the most quiet time of the day without others all up in your business. You can do it. Good luck.

When my daughter was your kids’ age, I don’t think I had any me time in the morning. I don’t think I had any me time that wasn’t in the car on the way to work. I missed it so much. I hope you can get it back.

My daughter is an adult, and I work from home, so my mornings are my own. I love it. I get up at about 5:30 or 5:45, and play my word games and drink tea until about 6:15 or so. Then I do my yoga, then go for a morning walk. I get home by 8 which is when I start work.

Yes, I protect my morning routine by all cost. if I’m rushed in the morning, i don’t have a good day.

4am get up, read blogs, newsletters, while drinking mate

    4:40am: meditate for 10-20 min

5-5:10am: get ready to head out for my run

5:10-5:30: eat a snack while prep girls breakfast and pack their lunch.

I am an early morning person – but 4:00, not 3-something!

My morning routine is like your golden hour one. I get up early, read blogs, have coffee, sometimes go for a run etc. then at 7 or 8 or 9 other people are up and I am fully invested in them without feeling like I’m being rushed or over-socialed.

Yes, it’s hard not to have that time in the morning. If it’s not a running day for me, I get up at 5:30 which is the same time as my daughter and immediately start getting things ready for the day (including packing her lunch and making breakfast, etc.) If it is a running day, I get up at 5 but still have to get moving right away, getting things ready before I leave for my run. I just don’t think I can get up any earlier- I don’t get enough sleep as it is. What time do you go to bed?

Good luck with your 4 am- I want to hear how it went!

I go to bed at around 7:30-8. Sad, isn’t it?…

Oh wow, 4am wake-up sounds painful.

That said, I woke up at 4 am this morning. I was so tired last evening, I fell asleep on the sofa as soon as my daughter stopped explaining keystone species to me (she was studying for a bio test). Did I do anything useful at 4am? Nope, I trundled upstairs to my bed and fell asleep again, with really weird disconnected dreams.

While I was sleeping on the sofa, my husband and our youngest fell asleep on the floor of the study… We are a mess, clearly.

Good luck with your early morning! Your morning routine sounds absolutely doable. I like your #1. What do you typically read in the mornings?

Haha, s’all good. Today I was up at 4:20 and it was… okay but today is the first day. I need to so it for about 20+ days to make a habit. or longer. But i enjoyed the quiet house very much today!

I get up at 5, and Minnie has one of those OK to Wake clocks that turns green at 6:40– meaning I get 1 hour and 40 minutes to wake up and exercise alone– I adore it.

Oof I am a hard pass on getting up before 6 am generally… I need more sleep than others do so 6 is my ideal wake time. I can get up at 5-5:30 occasionally but it’s not my ideal time to wake up. So 3:30-4 is bananas for me!! I’d be a total zombie by the end of the day. I hope R starts to sleep later. Our kids are finally reliably awake after 6am and sometimes they even sleep until 7 on the weekends. Sometimes I will wake on my own and have the house to myself for 30-40 minutes and those days are so nice.

I can understand that you crave a morning routine and some time to yourself.

I disagree about the time you put out there. How can you function at 3.30 am or 4am.

So, you had a 3 hour middle of the night morning routine?? It sounds delightful, but when did you go to bed to get enough sleep?
