It’s Friday, and I am at the end of my rope. Monday was awful, but then the rest of the week shaped up relatively okay. I am still so behind the blog reading and commenting, meals, and my book.

A fellow blogger Naomie reflected on silver linings, and I want to do the same.

1. We hired a once a week pick up person. On Thursday, Charlotte picked R up at preschool and brought him to jiu jitsu. Then I met them there after class and brought R home. Having that hour and a half was priceless. Too bad I didn’t plan well: I could have brought sneakers and gone for a hike, could have brought my book and read. Could have gotten a pedicure. This was the first time so from now on I will be ready 🙂

2. I did virtual yoga twice, even with kids at the house. On Tuesday, I gave them specific instructions: at 6:15, mom is doing yoga, you can watch 30 minutes of TV, then you have 30 minutes to play. They did well. On Wednesday yoga was at 7:30 and by that time they were sleeping.

3. I bribed R with a very small half a scoop of ice cream to eat his dinner this whole week: rice, beans, broccoli, tomatoes. But no chicken. He plainly refused, and I didn’t push. At least he had other food.

4. On Wednesday, my boss came into my class to observe (typical occurrence in education) and left extremely complementary feedback. The lesson was very good.

I rarely take selfies but it’s important to remember your face as I look at this post hopefully years later. This is Wednesday.

5. Every day this week, the kids played at L’s aftercare playground. So, I would sign her out then we will stay for another 15-20 minutes. It’s so great. Her school is brand new so the equipment is still clean and functional.

Who is this long-legged kid?

6. In spite of a difficult week, sleep was fine. I was down at 8:30-9 THE latest, and up at 5-5/30.

7. Writing about the hard week on the blog was helpful. Firstly, it was cathartic, like writing in a journal. Secondly, fellow bloggers stopped by, offered support, left comments. It was nice to see that they are with me in spirit.

8. Coco’s post about her and her daughter’s childhood put a smile on my face.

9. Not having email open constantly at work and not checking it at home at all felt good. It felt like I was setting a boundary. My email is not on my phone but there is a way to connect it, and at some point I felt the restless itch, but then said NO. There is absolutely nothing in the email that I need to see at 7pm at night. I won’t be able to address it then why do I need to SEE it? If there is something bad, it will just steal my peace.

10. Thankful for neighbors on both sides. Neighbor and fellow mom 1 is where L goes in the mornings. Neighbor 2 on the other side is where R goes to play all the time. So on both sides of our house I have two solid connections and very generous souls that can help in an emergency or just to vent.

How was your week? Any silver linings?

This made me laugh

Same, Daria, same! On basically all accounts. 🙂 My week had a lot of bright spots, but some work stress was just overshadowing all of it. Oh, and I saved that same Fall Bucket List- haha! So funny!!

On #4 – so good to have positive feedback – teaching is HARD (especially when life gets full-on intense and stressful), and you are doing a fantastic job. The kids and school are lucky to have you!

So sorry to hear that this week started out so hard.

Silver linings, hmm… Well, my husband will be away next week… so this week we tried to fit in a little more adventures and activities (daytime hike at a nearby park, an event at C’s elementary school) and he did a lot of chauffeuring-the-kids around. Next week is going to be pretty much the bare-minimum week – but that’s ok because most things are truly optional and we do them because we want/choose to do them (thought inspired by Grateful Kae’s recent post).

Some weeks there best thing to happen is getting to the end of them. We started strong, but I’m limping over the finish line today.

Onward and upward next week, I’m hoping!!

Gold stars for fitting in yoga at home. And for doing so well teaching while being observed! That sounds super stressful to me, so to stay calm and receive such good feedback is amazing.

I used to LOVE staying after school pickup to let my kids play at the playground. Late afternoons in the fall instantly take me back to watching them swing and run around. No bugs and no snow. Perfect playground weather!

Hopefully T is back next week??

Oh and I think it’s a great idea to have someone do pickup! Buying a few hours of time is so smart.

The realistic fall list is hilarious! It’s awesome that you’ve got some help with the driving now, and 1 1/2 hours to use for anything you need. I don’t know how teachers do it – those pop in observations would make me panic. I hope you have a lovely, restful weekend!

You made it to Friday! Hooray! I’m glad my post inspired you to write a silver linings post. I was going to write a grumble grumble post but now I’ll probably attempt something else. 😉

I’m so glad you are holding your email boundary! And bravo on having someone pick up R and take him to jiu jitsu. That is huge! Not only getting that time, but not having to rush to do pick up and change kid clothes and do drop off. Double win! Amazing.

I hope the weekend allows some rest and respite from everything. Keep that email closed!

I’m so glad that you hired someone to do pickup one day a week, and that gives you time for yourself! AND that you did yoga! Taking care of yourself is so helpful in taking care of others.

I’ve been off work this week but can’t help but look at my stupid work phone and really got myself stressed out about something stupid. My company is in the midst of doing layoffs, so any weird thing that happens is scary. We got an email on Wednesday about benefits in HR and mentioned a job change, and I thought I was being let go without even a discussion. SO SCARY. it turned out it was a change in classification from remote to in person office work for my team, and was just auto generated. UGH. We got a follow up email the next day that explained it, and if I had just NOT looked at my email when I’m off of work, I would not have gone through that.

love that pic of you with the fall theme color lipstick! It’s great that you got great feedback from your boss. We all need to be reminded from time to time that we are good at what we do, often time not enough reminder.

I’ve never tried virtual yoga before, how does it differ from just recorded classes? I try to do yoga 1-2 times a week to balance out with my running and the mental benefits of it.

Our week was good, except one night that I didn’t sleep well as I had a 9pm meeting. Otherwise we are outside of Jakarta, mountain area with cool and clean air for few days.

I’m glad things improved from Monday. And I’m really glad you hired someone to take R to jiu jitsu so you could have a little extra time to yourself. I think that is totally necessary!

I am so glad you could find some (really awesome) silver linings this week. I am glad you took the time for yoga (even if that meant screentime for the kids) and how wonderful to get positive feedback at work. Your selfie reflects that appreciation and happiness 🙂
