This week has been a grinder, so glad it’s Friday. Interestingly, nothing bad happened but I am BEAT.

On Tuesday I met my students for the first time and had to teach ALL of my classes. Our high school is on a rotation schedule so I usually teach three classes on one day, four classes on another. But Tuesday was all five classes plus a study hall class. Add to that the necessity to remember everyone’s name and a whole bunch of new [very friendly]faces. Oh, the mental load of the first day of school is immense. I went to bed at 7:30 on Tuesday.

We did go to the playground on Tuesday, after work. I needed the sunlight, the kids have been home all day. I just sat and stared at the space while the kids played. Then I started crying.

Wednesday was an easier day, our rotation schedule kicked in, so I only taught three classes. The school gives us a list of what to do the first week of school so I was plugging away at that. Did my SGO. Started them on a project. Switched their seats so I can learn their names faster. It was a busy day but with pockets of quiet downtime. After school we walked to our local playground, and I sat and read the Measure while the kids played.

In the evening I did a virtual yoga class! I still felt tired but forced myself to do it, and felt better afterwards.

Thursday was the first day of school for MY kids. Oh gosh. They wanted to do the “1st day back” posters so our morning was hectic.

I took the morning off so we could drop off L at first grade and R at his preschool. Both drop offs were underwhelming… You say goodbye at the entrance door of the school and that’s it. Neither R and L cried since I think they are used to going to school and camp. Lunches are provided by their respective schools (L buys lunch, R- free). So at least we don’t have to pack lunches. Before and after care started for one kid but not the other. L didn’t know where to go after school so she just sat in the main office until the school figured out that she is in aftercare. Shouldn’t they have a list??

R and I at this preschool drop off

After school I raced home to pick R up and to bring him to jiu jitsu. We decided to continue with one class a week. It’s more pressure on me, especially when T is traveling but I feel that jiu jitsu good for R. We met a Russian-speaking family at BJJ, and their son Nikita made friends with R. Now we need to do a play date!

There was some push back about bed time from our newly minted first grader but once her head hit the pillow, she was out. I mean, first day of school is hard for little people.

No yoga in the evening, read some of my book and lights out. Whew.

Finally, today, Friday. I am sitting in my class feeling overwhelmed. So many things to do (at work and at home). I am not sure where to even start…

This weekend the kids have gymnastics, and I have yoga two times. T is recording on Sunday, and I have Soulful Sunday workshop at the yoga studio. We need to catch up on putting away laundry, get groceries, make some kind of a meal plan, pick up the house. Maybe not clean the house but just pick up stuff currently lying around: toys, blankets, pillows, books… Some random object that really should be in the bathroom but it’s in the hallway?.. T is traveling next week so it’ll be me and the kids! Which means that preparation is even more important.

Have a nice weekend! Tell me how your week was and what you have on tap this weekend.

I wish Paul fell asleep as easily as L did! He was up way too late and then was a BEAR in the morning. I am trying to patient because I know he’s tired and his bedtime was later when he was at my parents but sheesh. Taco has rough mornings. I took him to get his ears checked yesterday to make sure he didn’t have another infection because he was SO MOODY! My week has been good at work bit rough at home. Last night I asked Phil if he felt like we were on candid camera? The kids were screaming so loud! Paul didn’t want to take a bath so took a shower. Taco wanted to take a bath but I told him he didn’t need one since he has one the night before. If Paul took a bath, I would have put him in the tub but Paul didn’t want to take a bath so that didn’t work. Oh the horror of not getting to take a bath!! Gah! Part of me is glad I travel next week, another part of me feels bad that Phil will have to deal with this on his own.

I really miss the stage when my kids fell asleep so quickly! But school IS tiring both mentally and emotionally (so many social dynamics to navigate). There were some tears in our house after the first day of school (a child not me) and it REALLY helped. I find crying can be so cathartic. I’m so, so sorry you felt overwhelmed but glad you continued to take time to do things that make you feel better and are grounding: sunshine, yoga, etc.

Hope this weekend is restorative ❤

I have two in-person yoga classes next week for the first time in TWENTY years. I’m nervous but excited.

I thought your kids started before you! They started after you?! That is harder. I feel you on sitting at work feeling totally overwhelmed. I’ve been feeling like that this week, especially now that I have real work to score from student. I realized when I got home today that I left all the tests I have to grade at school. I was so bummed. Usually I would go over the weekend to get them but we have a new alarm system and it’s messed up right now so I had to drive right back down and sit in a ton of rush hour traffic to grab them. It was a giant bummer. At least now I know I’ll grade them because there is no way I’m going to let them sit around when I drove over an hour to pick them up. Blerg. The school year has officially started.

Holy cow you are a gem for doing that. I would just let the students wait longer for graded work. But I know, middle school. I wanted to bring home my sgo to grade then left it- the deadline is 09/14 I have time.
The overwhelm is bananas. The house is a mess, the laundry is piling up to be folded, need groceries… Gah. Halp.

Whew, this was a busy first week back to school! You’ve got a lot on your plate and doing it solo – that’s tough! I’m sure it takes a while to get back in the swing of things. I hope you get some rest over the weekend!

I totally feel the sitting on the bench at the park crying part. Back to school is always so overwhelming. Hopefully, we will get into our routines soon. Hang in there.

That first day sounds so hard. And being present and concentrating all day is such a heavy load.

I loved The Measure. Hope you enjoy it.
