This weekend is my LAST weekend before having a full week of teaching. Tomorrow I am meeting the students! All is set, and all is ready but I feel nervous every year. I know the students will be nervous, too. But, first day jitters are entirely normal.

Today I have a house to myself for a few hours: R is at his friend’s house, L is another friend’s house with T. And I am home alone! Chili is slowly cooking itself on the stove, the house is borderline picked up, and I am writing this post.

The last weekend of summer was good. We ended up not going to the beach but instead stayed local. The nail salon to get our toes painted. The mall, milkshakes and Barnes and Noble. On Sunday we went hiking and got candles and soaps at Bath and Body Works. Plus, playgrounds. Always. Yoga on Friday and Saturday and got laundry under some kind of control.

Oh, and, and, and!… The back stairs are completely finished and oh, they look classy!!! Now we can walk safely and nobody will fall through.

One last thing that I want to share is that we took our annual family picture! T is a YouTuber and has the equipment to take nice photos without the need to hire a photographer. We took about 100 pictures, a variety of combinations, together, separate, pairs, T and I, the kids and us, the kids alone, etc. Here is one:

2024!

Just for kicks, here are the 2023 and 2022 annual pictures.

September

Self:

I go back to teaching, full time, every day, from 7:30AM till 3PM.

I want/need to keep up with my yoga practice, aiming for three times a week. In addition to regular yoga, I signed up for 1. Reiki and 2. Soulful Sunday workshops at my yoga studio. Those are given on weekends and are outside of your membership.

Wake up earlier: 5:30 to ground myself and have time to myself in the morning. Meaning: I have to go to bed earlier.

Family:

Back to school for everyone!

Three different back-to-school nights: one for me, one for L, one for R.

Piano, gymnastics for L

BJJ and gymnastics for R.

Work: get to know students, build routines for them and myself. Be more efficient at work, not be a slave to email. Don’t even have it open while I am working on something else, i.e. lesson plans.

Pic on the front: me and L fooling around.

This time of year is so full of transitions. It can feel both exciting AND unsettling.

Love all the final adventures like pedicures and ice cream. And what adorable family pictures AS ALWAYS. You are so beautiful and I love, love, love every dress you wear. They’re so colourful and lovely.

All the best with the first-day jitters and gold stars for getting the back stairs repaired and in ship shape 🙂

Yes! You got this! I’m sure this week at work is going to be great. It’s nice your kids went back before you, so you’re not all transitioning back to school at exactly the same time (my kids start about 1.5 weeks before my first day with students, which I always appreciate).
Also, T is a YouTuber? Can you tell us more about that? I am very intrigued…

What joyful family pictures! I love them.

I hope you have a great first week of school! I

We had our back to school night for the 12 year old last week, and I felt like it was really early to do it – it was the fourth day of school. The elementary schools seem to always do it two weeks in or so. I didn’t go to BTS night last year, the 12 year old’s first year of middle school, so I didn’t quite know what to expect. It is a lot different from elementary school BTS Night! So many more teachers and classes to cram in.

Wow, yes that’s really early! Ours is September 24.. Middle school can be quite an experience for sure- I taught middle school for 10 years before transitioning to high school.

It is nice to be able to take your own family pics! We haven’t had family pics in 2 years as the experience was so awful last time that we are still scarred by it. Ha. The photographer was amazing (she’s my cousin’s wife) but the kids were so terrible! Maybe next year we will try again.

I hope return to school goes as smoothly as it can. Re-entry has been rough. Paul was excited but nervous for school to start. He had a good first day but he needs to go to bed earlier and that has been a battle after later bedtimes and sleeping in at my parents… eeks. Taco is just an obstructionist with huge emotions. I made an appt to get his ears re-checked since he’s been soo moody and has been waking at night. But at least I am not traveling this week and am here to help.

Adorable pics! Ha! I have never mastered the “silly photo” look…. other people’s always look cute, but every time I try that, I think I just look weird. LOL.

Hope your first week is going well! It’s always hard to transition. Sounds like you have a lot of good stuff planned, are well organized, etc.
