It is 1am Italian time, and T and I are wide awake because we are still on the New Jersey time. What is better to do than to update the blog?

Will only give the highlights of day 1.

1. Our Airbnb building is so old, is definitely NOT up to code 🤣, and it has 124 steps (we counted). Elevator? What elevator?.. By the end of this week, we all expect to have thighs of steel. The apartment itself is on the 5th floor and has everything we need. They left us a whole basket of treats (including spaghetti and sauce!) and a bottle of wine as a welcome present. So kind. But the building is definitely haunted.

R asked if the building is haunted 🤣 I wouldn’t be surprised if it were.

2. We are so jet lagged!!! I love travel but I always seem to forget how jet lag wreaks havoc on your system, both physically and mentally. I did not sleep a wink on the plane and felt so out of sorts when we landed. As day 1 progressed, I felt marginally better but I collapsed into bed at 9 pm Italian time.

3. The food is incredible. We didn’t really eat lunch or breakfast on day 1, because, honestly, we felt so blergh… T and I did hog the espresso machine in the apartment but the kids got by with crackers and cheese. Every time I’d ask them “you hungry?” the answer was no, and I could relate. But in the evening, I actually felt hungry, and we went out to a legit restaurant. The food was wonderful. Main courses were anywhere from €15 to €32 so not cheap. R was really feeling the jet lag; he only nibbled off our plates: a few olives, some mozzarella cheese, and maybe one string of pasta?..

You can see that R is just off… He was so tired.🥱

4. But what did we actually DO on day 1? Arrived at 8am, checked in, unpacked, T collapsed for a nap, I got a second wind so the kids and I went out to explore for a bit. Sat in a cafe for a while, went back. In the afternoon, everyone took naps, because a) it was in the 90s and b) we were all so tired. After the naps, we spent about 2 hours at the beach. Then the playground right by the beach. Went back to the apartment, climbed 124 stairs, chilled, took yet another shower, went out to dinner. Roamed around town in the evening, bought some stuff, and hit the playground again 🙃

The playground

And now a slew of images from today.

That’s a wrap! Now it’s 1:46am and I am still awake 😆

Oh dear, I usually find the first night better than the second because I’m so tired from the flight, although we do take ta least 24 hours and usually closer to 30 to get there. I love the food in Italy and your meal looks fabulous. I hope you both get some sleep and look forward to hearing more.

Jet lag can be BRUTAL. We like to arrive in the morning and then take a short nap mid-afternoon and try to push through to 8 pm ish and then…crash.

I LOVE that building. So much character.

Isn’t the food in Italy just…the best. Just yesterday my husband and I were recalling all our favourite meals in Rome. Such high quality, simple ingredients, done oh-so-well.

Your pictures are stunning and it looks like such a fantastic (albeit tired) start to your vacation.

Yay! You’re there! I’d gotten behind on my blog reading and now you’re in Italy! That building looks so gorgeous in your photos. 124 stairs is a lot and you’ll certainly have strong legs after your vacation. If there’s a ghost, I’m sure it’s a friendly one!

Somehow I don’t think I realized you were going to be there already, YAY! I hope the jet lag wears off quickly. The building is AMAZING, the views are stunning. And that linguine and clams is making me want to get on an airplane right now, jet lag be damned!

wooo! that’s a lot of stairs to climb everyday several times a day! I guess that’s the norm in that part of italy?

Jetlag can be tough, especially going to Europe (coming back is easier somehow).

I love all the pictures, what a historical place… including your AirBnB with all the steps LOL

Jet lag is SO rough! I know you’re supposed to just push through to get on your “new time” but I think the next time I travel overseas, I just need to give myself a day to rest and get used to the new time. It’s so hard, especially because all the travel beforehand is a LOT.

Those stairs look BRUTAL. But the place itself looks BEAUTIFUL!
