On Thursday, after yoga (yep, still going because $$) I took myself to Barnes and Noble book store. Treated myself to a caramel macchiato. Sat there for an hour perusing magazines and books. Did not purchase anything else, just the coffee.

This book… was something. I am a Taurus so the self-care recommendations were wear a turtleneck, surround yourself with woodsy images/smells, and use sauna.

Thursday night: a date with T! We saw Longlegs, a horror movie. It was okay. The trailer built it up so much for me that the movie itself was disappointing.

T is very excited over his popcorn 🍿

Friday I could not go to yoga because I met up with a long-time friend and a former colleague for breakfast. And afterwards… I think I just came back home and had some alone time?.. I probably read, did laundry, picked up the house.

Notice the “fairy” necklace – created in camp

Saturday and Sunday the kids were home so we made sure to spend time with them. We have been getting thunderstorms almost every day, and they are welcome! At least a thunderstorm breaks the heat a little bit and waters my roses.

Saturday morning, R was invited next door to play with his friend. L practiced her piano/fooled around. Then they each did a project: R was building a volcano, and L decorated a water bottle. I called my dad in Russia and chatted with him, feeling sad after hanging up.

A volcano project, not finished yet

We then went to the mall since I needed to go to Sephora to buy something for dark spots on my face, plus I wanted a new scent. Over the course of fall and winter I had a Tory Birch set of teeny tiny bottles that had since been used up. After smelling about 5 scents, I settled on a very small bottle of Jo Malone. Rose and green tea? Don’t remember.

After Sephora, lunch was at the Cheesecake Factory.

GOOFS

Sunday was beach day but first we went for a nice morning walk.

These trees on our street -sequoias? are lovely but they constantly shed bark, especially in the fall

We left later than usual and it took us… wait for it… THREE hours to get to our beach spot (this trip takes about 1 hour). Traffic was unbelievable. The beach we go to – Sandy Hook- is part of a federal area that has about 8 different beach areas. Only three were open due to the crowds. Oof

I wasn’t a happy camper and neither were the kids. But, we arrived, parked, and went to the bay side. It has a lot of rocks- huge boulders- that can be interesting to play on.

A few hours later…

Time to go ⛈️

I want to take the time to also write about the project that T is working on right now. The back stairs. The house is old, these stairs were sinking and rotting, we had a wasp nest under there. It was time. This project is kicking T’s butt- he had to rent a jack hammer from Home Depot to remove some concrete underneath. Anyway, it’s a boatload of work, so,honey, if you are reading- thank you.

Where they standing the old stairs used to be

Three hours to get to the beach, that is a lot. I can imagine the kids were pretty restless in the car that long.

I’m curious about the books suggestions for self-care. They seem very specific. Do you think they’re accurate for you?

Honestly, I don’t even know… I do get a soar throat often that seems to be my “vulnerable “ area so maybe a turtleneck is a useful tip. Sauna… could be for anyone really.

Three hours for a one hour trip, aiieeeee. Bad enough for you, but having the kids there too, I can imagine the general feeling in the car!

That’s a big project your husband is taking on!

Wow that’s a huge project ad what a cool p[ic of the approaching storm. Love the fairy necklace showing up again at lunch— so cute! I also love perusing titles and B&N and putting books on my library holds.

Props to your Husband for taking on that project! We do not DIY anything of that scale – that is strictly a “hire a professional” kind of thing for us.

My parents (who live in a suburb of Los Angeles) like to tell me that they live close to the beach, and how fun is that? But with traffic, it can be upwards of two hours to get there. I tell them our closest beach is farther away in terms of miles, but it takes me less than two hours to get there.

I don’t know if anyone could ever convince me to wear a turtleneck, not even in the name of self-care.

OMG. 3 hours to get to the beach! I think I would have had to turn back! It’s tough when traffic makes it so hard to get to fun places!

We lost power on Sat night during a huge storm and it didn’t come back on until Monday afternoon. So it was kind of a rough weekend for us. We spent Sunday afternoon at my MIL’s. It was oppressively humid outside so we laid low and watched a couple of movies in the a/c. I had a bad 7 mile run that morning – probably because of the heat and not having caffeine (I usually drink coffee before a run) so I was totally wiped out. But wow am I thankful to have power again in our house!!

Lovely beach trip, but that three-hour journey sounds tedious; Nice convo with dad, but then that letdown-aftermath; Fun date night, but disappointing movie.

    So many up-down things… hugs.

Wow, that stair project sounds really challenging and worthwhile! Way to go, T!

My husband has mentioned wanting to see Longlegs… I get WAY too scared, so maybe it won’t be so bad for me? But then again, he doesn’t get scared easily, so maybe it will be a letdown?

OMG, a 3-hour car ride to the beach sounds MISERABLE. I’m glad you guys finally made it there and the kids could get out all that energy! Whew.

That house project sounds intense. Good thing T is handy!

[…] I was determined to go to the beach. After our terrible experience of sitting in traffic for three hours on Sunday, we left at 7:30AM. It took us 56 minutes this time to get to Sandy Hook!! And that is with a Wawa […]

Wow, I am impressed T is taking on the stair project. Jon is not a handyman at all and I am in awe of all husband’s that attempt projects around the house 😉 (let us know when he’s finished!).

I am sorry about the long car ride. Ugh. That’s no fun for anybody.

I hope all is well with your dad. You said you were sad after you talked to him. Or maybe you just miss him. Hugs my friend, it’s hard to live so far away from family.
