This week is the first week that the kids are HOME from school.

We are on two different school calendars: I finished my school year on June 14th, the kids: June 27th. Plus I pulled them out on June 25-27 to go camping.

We are kinda sorta falling into a routine: in the morning/afternoon we do an activity or go somewhere (i.e. down the shore), and in the late afternoon/evening the kids play/watch movies/swim in our tiny pool/roam in the wooded area behind our patio (fenced in). I told them: “don’t come back unless you have found at least three snails and one mosquito.” They were there for a while.

It took me three days to unpack, clean, and repack all the camping gear, and do all the laundry. Some bins are still downstairs and should be brought into the basement. The day after we came back from camping, we just rested. My body hurt, I needed a down day. But on the weekend we went to the beach, the library, and the playground.

On Sunday night I sat down and schemed what I can do with the kids this week, since they are home, I am home, and T is working. Next week they have camp for the next three weeks, then Italy, then it’s the end of August.

So, yesterday we went to an amusement park in Hope, NJ: The Land of Make Believe. The park is not big and caters to small kids, aged up to 12, maybe? So my kids, who are 4 and 6, could ride all of the rides of their choice. It was very quiet, no lines, and we could ride some rides over and over again, without getting off. Isn’t that wonderful? There was also a waterpark, with a lazy river, a wading pool, and water slides. How fun. I am not an amusement park kind of person but, let me whisper in your ear… I had a good time.

Today, Tuesday, we did another beach day. Rather, a half a day. We left early at 9am and came home at around 2pm. Happy to share that the kids were particularly good.

I even had segments of time where I did not have to referee. I could read my book while they scrambled in the sand next to me, built and destroyed sand castles and bridges, and ate non-stop. When we came back, the kids watched a movie then R had Brazilian jiu jitsu in the late afternoon.

There are moments when I am like “I am so sick of you two.” Especially when they fight, or argue, or whine, or fake burp, or real burp, or fake/real fart, or make weird and kind of disturbing noises with their mouths, or fingers, or toes, or all three. And then a second later they have the nerve to ask for ice cream!

Some sanity savers for this summer are:

The beach (we go to the same beach over and over)

Brazilian jiu jitsu lessons for R

Piano lessons for L

Our small pool + the woodsy area in the back

TV/movies

Library visits

Yoga for me! Just signed up today and going to my first class tomorrow morning. 🙌

How fun!! I only have one little kid at home, and the big 4 just sort of schedule themselves to go into the pool or go places with friends, but I miss these endless days at home. It;s easy to occupy Minnie all day and fun– but I miss the crowd.

Your amusement park sounds like one that I used to take the boys to all the time when they were small. It was so cheap to get an annual pass, so that’s what I did, and it was such a fun way to pass the time. All the rides were accessible to them, or mostly, and it was a small park that they knew their way around, with few lineups! Ahhh those were nice memories!

That amusement park sounds wonderful! Anything with limited lines in the summer is amazing. We have a similar approach to structuring our weekends. I do something with the boys in the morning, then I need a 1-1.5 hour break midday to lay down and Phil is the point person. Then we do something after I have rested. I have done most of the weekend activities lately to give Phil a break since he solo parents so much. But I mostly enjoy what we do. Last week we went to a very nice pool with a great kids area. I didn’t have to watch Paul at all as it’s very shallow and he’s way more competent in the water thanks to swimming lessons. Taco wanted to be attached to me at all times. I looked at the moms reading novels in chairs and yearned for that stage of parenting. Ha. But at least they water was at a comfortable temp so it wasn’t terrible to sit in the water with taco.

We go to my parents tomorrow. The weather looks iffy but a change of scenery and other adults to entertain my children = better than being at home even if it rains every day.

You’re doing such a great job keeping the kids entertained… I can imagine that sometimes tensions are running high. I am glad you’re seeking out things to do for yourself, like yoga!

[…] I won’t regurgitate the month of June 2024 since I already reflected on it. In short: end of school celebrations+ a week of deep rest+camping+summer activities. […]

Oh, we used to have a little amusement park nearby that we would go to. Nice memories. Actually, it’s still there. I think we had my daughter’s birthday party there when she was in Kindergarten. Of course, she’s an adult now, so we don’t go anymore. The beach…I just love the ocean, though that’s not something we do very often either. The ocean in Northern California is very different from Southern California. Very rough and cold.

That amusement park sounds perfect! What a great place to escape to where you can wear the kids out.

What a fun summer you have planned! I hope you also get some rest and relaxation squeezed in there.
