Today is Juneteenth, so first and foremost, I acknowledge the struggles that African American people went through to get to freedom.

Where to start. This week is kind of magical- the kids still have school but I am done for the year. I find myself with lots of hours to fill.

There is always, always, work to be done around the house: kitchen, laundry, meals, garden.

I am almost convalescing. Reading, taking naps, meditating, sitting outside. My job is not THAT hard. But I guess I did get burned out this year. That’s something that I do not like to acknowledge.

In no particular order, here is what I have been spending my time on this week:

Sitting outside, morning and evenings

Pulling weeds and watering garden

Reading (!) books and blogs

Just roaming around the house and yard

Reorganizing + decluttering a little

Walking

Watching a show with T

Now for some images so I can anchor this post in time. Days tend to blur one into another if I don’t anchor them with something.

Yes! Take a break! Teaching is hard. The interpersonal work alone (dealing with SO MANY PEOPLE EVERY DAY – people who are still learning how to be people!) is insane, let alone planning and grading and all the rest. It’s a hard job, even when you’re not teaching the hardest subject or population of students. I really do think teachers need the breaks we get, because without them we’re unable to turn off in the ways we need to recharge.
I always kept my kids in day care and then put them in camps when they got older during the summer because 1) they need the structure at least some of the time and 2) I need the time away from them and people in general. And as you said, there are always things to get done, but I’m glad you’re also taking the time to rest and find yourself again. It’s so important.

This sounds like a perfect week, Daria! I’m glad you’re taking some time for yourself. I’m sure the end of the school year is very busy and intense for teachers, and you do need time to recover from it.

Love all these snapshots of life and you’re so right about “anchoring” the days. I don’t struggle with that during the fall and winter, but as we slide into summer I have a hard time keeping track of what we’ve done when because routines are so varied from week to week.

Teaching is SO intense and I hope you get as much time as possible to decompress and unwind this summer.

Also, I ADORE the colour of your bathing suit. It screams summer and fun!

How wonderful to be off for a bit before the kids are out of school. And your job IS hard! You love it but it’s still hard! So I am glad you are getting some time to rest! The pics of the kids are so cute. That looks like a challenging puzzle that L is working on. I need to find some more challenging ones for Paul.

Sitting outside, mornings and evenings.. yes please, that sounds like summer! I also love the reorganizing and decluttering part (I am actually doing a bit of that too right now).

    And I love the photos.

OMG, Tove Jansson!!! I’ve heard that she had books for the grown-ups. What did you think of the True Deceivers? This is the same author who wrote Moomintrolls, right?

YES! I grew up with moomin books, when I was a kid, we had a subscription where the books will just arrive and I devoured them. True Deceiver was… interesting- I did not love the language- it’s in translation – but the premise was intriguing- the book in a slow going, definitely a very “nordic” style which is kind of similar to Russian outlook on life.
