Friday. I kind of fell into a should-less day. On Friday, I was mulling around the house, and a thought came into my head – can I go to the beach? And I went to the beach. Spent about 4 hours at Sandy Hook. I alternated my time there with hunting for pebbles, reading, wasting time on the Internet, planning, and just staring at the water.

Saturday. An open day! Kids had their gymnastics classes in the morning, L had piano in the afternoon. Then we bummed around the back yard, T set up and filled the pool, and we scavenged the refrigerator for an impromptu barbecue. We happened to have franks, ground turkey and I whipped up a salad. S’mores were the culmination to this nice evening.

Sunday. I started feeling down but I saw my two sister-friends. My fried F opened her place for a nice brunch, we all brought what we could, and had some quality time and nice conversations. On Sunday night I felt miserable. Looked at the calendar- yep, luteal phase. I spent the evening by myself, on Pinterest, feeling weepy and low.

Sister-friends.
My sister-friend B couldn’t make it and was missed.

Monday. Continued to feel utterly miserable. Low mood, weepy on the inside, “nobody loves me” feeling, moping, etc. Plus, it was raining! So that added to my misery.

But: R and I had tickets to the Liberty Science Center, so I was good for me to actually get out. The visit was so, so cool. The exhibits, the activities, the animals, the planetarium. R had a wonderful time. When we came back, we both collapsed for a nap- him, because he is four, and me- because, luteal phase and perimenopause.

Tuesday. The sun came out AND the period started. And I felt marginally better. L and I had tickets to the New York Botanical Gardens to see Curious Nature: Wonderland. All the installations and plant designs were based on Alice in Wonderland book. We left at 8:30 and arrived in the Bronx at 10:30. Two full hours in traffic and three accidents. The gardens opened at 10 and, by the time we arrived, were empty. We could have spent the whole day there but we had a long drive home. Arrived home at 3pm. The beauty of the plants is just astounding and of course I took a million pictures.

All in all, the five days off were nice. Thanks to the pool, the neighbor kids, the toys, the activities, the iPads, and other stuff to do, we had a good weekend. Long weekends with small kids can be rough because you run out of stuff to do real fast. There were days when I was like “how much longer till bedtime?”

Have you ever been to a botanical garden? Is there such a thing as Memorial Day in your neck of the woods? If not Memorial Day, is there a similar holiday?

I am glad you had a shouldless day and the brunch with your sister friends sounds so wonderful. My cycle is so messed up from being on high doses of steroids which suppress your adrenal system so I am like day 60 something of my cycle. Plus I am extra cranky from the steroids. Oh the joys of being a woman!

It was a very rainy weekend here and yesterday was especially bad so the weekend felt very long!! I was so happy to go back to work today. That garden looks amazing! I would love going there!!

I hate that stupid irrationally emotional feeling … yuck! I’m glad you are feeling more like yourself now, and overall it was a good long weekend with lots of fun things sprinkled throughout. The Wonderland display looks truly gorgeous.

in Australia we have Anzac Day which is a set date public holiday on 25th April, so no long weekend, but coming up we have the King’s birthday weekend which is the second Monday in June. It’s not his actual birthday, but is celebrated then to coincide with the start of better weather in the northern hemisphere which is more conducive to outdoor celebrations, but of course, here in Australia, it is winter.

My cycle messes so many things up for me emotionally. I struggle every month and every month I try to remember to show myself kindness. But IT IS HARD.

Love all the photos; it looks like a truly delightful garden exhibit and the science centre looks so fun.

As always, your home and landscaping look so lovely! You’ve created a very inviting place to spend time this summer ❤

That looks really fun, Daria. The botanical gardens remind me so much of the one at the Calgary Zoo, so this gave me nice nostalgia.

I love the should-less days – I *should* do that too!

One day I will visit Canada, I’ve never been! There is a zoo next to the gardens in the Bronx, too, but we were so fried after the gardens visit alone lol

So many lovely photos, Daria! I’m glad you had a should-less day and went to the beach! I’m sorry you’re having to go through all that hormonal stuff. I’m 55 and here to tell you that it gets better! I still get an unexpected hot flash once in a while, but the hormonal mood swings have gone. Hang in there!

My cousin and I went to the Prominade Plantes in Paris, but it was too warm and we couldn’t manage the idea of going inside the greenhouses, so we kept walking and went to the Luxembourg gardens instead. One of the prettiest gardens I have seen is in your neck of the woods, Longwood Gardens. I was there in 2000, but haven’t been back to PA since.

I’m glad you had some time to yourself on Friday. I can’t remember the last time I went to the ocean alone, what a great idea.

The Luxembourg Gardens were so beautiful, yes! There was a nice play are that the kids enjoyed 🙂 albeit you had to pay to get in. I have heard about Longwood gardens, and it’s quite a drive, maybe this summer.. Stay over ? Thanks for putting a thoughts into my head 🙂

A day by yourself at the beach sounds so lovely! I don’t like the water at a beach, but I do like to sit and watch the waves and listen to the seagulls.

We have a small Botanical Garden near us, run by the county. I love that it is free so I can go there on a whim if I want and not have to think about paying admission. It is about five minutes from the library so sometimes I will go to the library and check out a book and then go to the gardens to read. It doesn’t have a wide variety of plants or anything and the greenhouse is quite small, but it is really nice to have such a great green space to enjoy whenever I want.

Our Memorial Day weekend was quiet but full – I had to work Saturday, and then there was a party afterwards. Sunday was playdates and birthday parties and family game night and Monday was a nature walk, lunch and a movie with friends. No big adventures, but lots of moments of connection.

I think I know the garden you are describing! It may have appeared in one of your posts. I only wet my feet but other people were swimming full force. Good for them. I see New York City in the distance from Sandy Hook beach and just imagine all the crap from NYC floating down to Jersey beaches lol

Both outings with your kids look so fun. What an adventure.

I love botanical gardens. So much to discover. It’s been a minute since I visited the one in Berlin.
