Been away from this space a while but am back.

Snow. We had a major snow storm here in NJ, stating on Sunday morning and finishing on Monday morning. The clean up took a while, of course. I very much appreciated a snow day, and I know my students (and my kids!) did, too.

However.

Having a snow day is fun up until… maybe 11am?.. After that you run out of things to do and the arguing starts. The Y was closed, the skating rink was closed, and the library..

The only two people who braved the elements were: 1. my husband since he had to snow blow and 2. my son because he is six.

Five minutes later:

Theater. On Saturday night, before the snow, I went to see Drum Tao in New Brunswick. As expected, it was phenomenal and otherworldly. No pictures were allowed but I did snap one before the curtain went up.

Drum Tao

Whenever I go to see a live show, I am always reminded how special it is to have actual people perform for an actual audience, in real life and in real time.

I mentioned before that I shell out more money for sitting near the stage. Firstly, I am myopic. Secondly and specifically for drums, you need to feel the vibration in your chest. I find it healing. Lastly, the performers make eye contact when you are sitting up close- wink, smile, even give thumbs up. Could be part of the performance but still feels special.

I want to purchase tickets for the following shows but am stalling for a variety of reasons:

Les ballets africains – it’s on a TUESDAY night but tickets are reasonably priced. I’ve been mulling it over since September of last year..

Diana Krall – expensive tickets

Nai-ni Chen dance company, year of the Horse– it’s on February 14th, Valentine’s Day.. My daughter and I saw them perform for the year of the dragon, in February of 2024.

Riverdance– the tickets are…$$$!

Shen Yun – always wanted to see them perform but tickets are very expensive.

But, enough about theater…

Health. I am sick today and took a sick day. Yesterday I had a soar throat and felt very cold at work, but pulled through, ending the day in bed at 6pm with a soar throat, gut cramps, and a terrible headache. I googled it, of course, and it looks like a norovirus. The cramps are not related to pre-menstrual syndrome since I’m in the middle of my cycle.

Also, fatigued with an overall feeling of malaise. But no fever!

Mood. I have not exercised this whole week. I miss it. Even weights. Naturally, because I haven’t exercised and not been feeling well, my mood is low, but nothing terrible. Hoping when the physical health improves, my mental mood lifts as well. I’m just grateful T is not away this week.

Cafe on Saturday, pre-blizzard

A sick day means I got to read a bit more than usual:

Truly is delightful

On my mind:

At the moment I am thinking about what I need to do to feel better and get back to the Y. I want to do weights and I want to swim some laps.

I also want my stomach cramps to go away.

I want the world to be stop being so crazy.

I want to finish my novel (see above) and start “Heart Wood” that is waiting for me on my digital shelf.

I am thinking about my parents…

Also thinking about what I have to look forward to.

What’s new in your world?

What are you looking forward to?

How is your mental and physical health?

I was wondering what you have been up to. Hopefully you will start to feel better soon. I love the snow pictures, but don’t think I would want to live where it snows, I like to just visit and enjoy snow when I’m on holiday.

I have also been sick with some kind of virus. i’m much better now but have a lingering cough which is annoying.

ALL day today I was horizontal… Terrible cough and congestion that just would not quit. I wanted to claw my eyes out, they are itching so bad. This is a tough time of year- for sure. And we have -20s C in NJ all week :/

A snow day and then a sick day. That is brutal! I am glad T is not traveling this week (I don’t think he is??). I was the one who is away this week but I got on an earlier flight back so I land at 5:30 instead of 7:30 so that means I will be there to help/oversee piano practice and do both bedtimes. Phil will be glad.

I hope you feel better soon and everyone else stays healthy!!

That’s wonderful! Tony takes earlier flights, too, when he can- sometimes a red eye to be in MJ for morning drop off – I honestly do not know how he does it. Or how I do it when he is not here lol

Oh my goodness, yes to snow days peaking before 11 am. Thankfully, we had tons of snow for this snow storm which makes it feel more “legit” and my daughter was babysitting so my kids couldn’t fight. In the end, it turned out okay.

Winter can be such a drag emotionally and physically. There are so many bugs circulating and I think the cold and weather is so draining and makes it harder to recover. I hope you’re feeling 100% soon.

All the gold stars for going to live events. I love that you do this (and that you expose your kids to arts and culture)!

I hope you feel better fast. I loved that book. I also cannot go a day without a workout. I do not understand people who don’t exercise every single day–so I get your exercise craving for sure (I obviously take sick days off, too). LOL you are right about the allure of a snow day ending at 11am.

Went to work yesterday but collarín a heap today- with terrible symptoms of congestion and body aches. My eyes itch so bad I want to claw them out!

That is the cutest photo of your kid in the snow!

So difficult to have all those difficult symptoms one after another and on top of each other. I hope you feel better soon.

Live music is one of the best things in life. I am (gulp) leading the music (singing) at our church retreat this weekend. No professional singers, but we will sing our hearts out! That is what is new in my world (I am not a professional musician so leading music is a stretch for me) and it is also what I am looking forward to.

Maybe we should do a drum circle next year…

My heart goes out to you, thinking about your parents.

My health…. is not great. Last year I had been getting some exercise by door knocking for candidates. So far this month feels like it has been 8,000 days long and it is so bitter cold. It all makes me feel down. But… music at the retreat!

Music is everything, isn’t it?… human voices signing together is so healing.

I hope you got lots of good rest and are feeling better!

Our school was cancelled all week, and it turns out tomorrow (Monday) too. It isn’t snowing anymore, and the streets are almost all cleared, but there is still not a lot of space for buses to clear or for pedestrians to walk, so the school district is saying it isn’t safe.

I think it’s okay if you don’t see Shen Yun – They are kind of … shady. (I might be biased because my parents are from Taiwan. But seriously, maybe google them before you buy tickets…)

Ohhh I didn’t know that about them… I keep seeing advertisements everywhere, I even saw them in Paris, but did not know they are a bit shady. Will research.

Snow days AND sick days? That’s not a great combo! I hope you’re on the mend and can get back to the gym. It’s always hard to fall off that kind of routine when you’ve just gotten into it.

My physical/mental health has been a lot better thanks to finally having a diagnosis and treatment for my chronic pain. ❤

Thank you, Stephany… I know, you went through such an ordeal but now you have answers. And no, they may not make things better but still, it’s good to have clarity.

I laughed so hard when you said that snow days are only fun until 11 am. I remember those days vividly. After lunch, I needed a nap. 🤣

So much snow! And then sickness on top of it. So many people were sick lately. I hope you feel better. At least you got to read a little bit.

    How are your parents?

Oh, San, my parents are not doing so well. My dad fell into a depression which is understandable. He was always so sought after- at work, with friends, with us. He would do free projects with his friends (i.e.) digging the well (??) completely for free to help his friends out and also to stay busy. And now. He cannot move his left arm or hand and he just watched TV all day. And cries.
      It’s a sad, sad situation.
