The kids and I were off today (and we are off tomorrow!)

We took a day trip to the Big Apple.

We live about an hour from NYC by train. In the morning, we took a train in, and that ride took 58 minutes.

On the way back, we did have to transfer at Newark so that ride was a bit longer.

Five things from our NYC day trip:

1. Aux Merveilleux de Fred. It’s a French bakery that has delicious pastries and good coffee. We had to refuel after our ride from NJ.

A cherry mini merveilleux

2.Kinokuniya store in Bryant Park.

I bought some stuff with cats on them; some notebooks, a small 2026 desk calendar, glitter markers, and stickers. The kids got some toys and puzzles. We also bought two Christmas ornaments made of felt-like material.

Unpacking our Kinokuniya haul in Bryant Park

3. Bryant Park. I just love Bryant Park. They have a winter village already set up, including a skating rink. I *almost* bought a $40 glass ornament with NYC on it. I stopped myself in time. There were chairs all over so you could sit and enjoy the vibe of the city.

Chilling

4. Chinatown. From Bryant Park, we took the N train downtown to see Chinatown and to have lunch there since my kids and I enjoy Asian cuisine. We got off at Canal street and walked for about 10 minutes (but what felt like an eternity) into the heart of Chinatown. We then ended up at a Nom Wah Tea Parlor: a dim sum restaurant and a tea room.

5. Herald Square Macy’s. On our way back home we popped into the famous Macy’s. Inside, the halls were all decked! But they were still working on the windows which had some kind of ginger bread framing? And they were doing them by HAND.

We saw a person using some kind of a tool, similar to a frosting squeezer, to create these patterns. Wild.

And that is five things from our day trip.

Do you have a big city near you?

This month I am participating in #NaBloPoMo2025. A running list of participants can be found on San’s NaBloPoMo page as well as more information about this lovely initiative on this NaBloPoMo page.

What a great day you had! Does your daughter love Totoro? We are big fans around here.

We live close to San Francisco and Berkeley as well, so there’s always a lot to do if we feel like getting out of our little suburb.

I don’t know why this is happening to me lately. I did not submit my comment twice, please feel free to delete the second one (and this one!)

Oh wow, I’m pretty jealous that you are only an hour by train from New York City. When we went, the hotel we stayed in was just opposite Bryant Park and the winter village was set up. Your photos bring back good memeories. We live in a big city—not quite as big as NYC though (pop. 5.1M). We are about 10K from the CBD.

    Oh hello there, Totoro!!!

Looks like it was a lovely day in NYC.

We are near Philadelphia – we don’t go as often as we should…

I don’t live near a big city, so this sounds like an amazing day to me! The big Totoro would have been hard to resist!

Looks and sounds like a great day was had by all. I live about 2 hours north of Seattle, but honestly, hardly ever visit. I enjoy my bucolic life in the country.

This sounds so, so fun! I love the little shopping spree- notebooks, markers and stickers would be fun purchases for me. I love all the holiday things beginning, and your lunch in Chinatown. I bet the kids loved this!

You went to such cool places!

We live near Chicago. We don’t go as often as we used to, but we always enjoy it when we do.

Kari, whenever I’m in the city, I always think I should go their more often. I mean, it’s so close. And then life gets in a way and I don’t.

What a magical visit to NYC. I have always wanted to visit over the holiday season. I haven’t made it happen yet, but it’s definitely on my list! I really want to see all the store displays and I think it would be magical to see the tree in Rockefeller!

It looks like it was a perfect day! By the way, if I haven’t already mentioned it, your children are adorable. I’m near several bog Florida cities – Tampa, Miami and Orlando, but thankfully not too close.

Oh that is fun. One day I will be in NYC during the holiday season. It must be amazing and overwhelming.

I would skate on an ice rink in NYC though.
