On Saturday, R and I went to the Prudential Arena in Newark to see the Monster Jam. Six monster trucks race and compete on how high they jump, how long they stay on two wheels, and how they spin.

I loved it.

I didn’t think I would because, I am an introvert and, apart from plays here and there, I don’t go to this type of giant events. This was quite a SHOW.

The trucks were colorful, shiny, and oh so LOUD. The whole place was vibrating with such great energy, catchy music, tons of kids, very informal and interactive- the hosts continuously interviewed children, played cam games, gave out toy monster trucks.

In total, six monster trucks, with two women drivers and four men.

My favorite was El Toro Loco, an orange truck with horns and steam coming out of his nostrils
The Grave Digger is done
The Sparkle Smash
The Zombie truck had two hands sticking out like a zombie

Saturday night.. I was so tired.. But I had a wonderful time. This event cost us $86 for two tickets, $26 parking fee and $24 for one beer and one water. Gas, our town to Newark? Maybe $7?

Worth it!

On Sunday L and I went the Korean spa and sauna. I usually go alone but she has been asking me to go so together we went. Every last weekend of the month is a family weekend where you can bring your kids. We were the first ones in line, there at 9am sharp. She has been up since 6, ready to go 😜

L at the Himalayan salt sauna

We stayed from 9 to a little past 2pm. We (I) alternated between a variety of saunas (Himalayan salt, gem, charcoal, forest dry). While I was sweating buckets, L would stay for a short while (think a few minutes) then come out and wait for me outside. She had her sketch pad and pencils, her two dolls, and her iPad. The place had plentiful seating.

We also explored the wet part of the spa – a section with three hot round pools with burbling jets, a Turkish steam, and a dry aromatherapy sauna. L loved the jacuzzis. That section is female only. Men have their own wet section.

This was a good experience for L since in the wet section of the sauna, no clothes is permissible. In other words, you have to be naked. I talked to her before hand about that so that it wouldn’t be a shock to her. I told her that she will see naked women and girls, and that we all have different bodies but in the end we are the same- humans. When we were about to go into the wet section, I told her to get undressed and she was shy, but once she saw that everybody had no clothes on, she relaxed and started playing.

During the visit we consumed a boba tea, a coffee, a smoothie, and some vanilla ice cream. Lunch was two Korean dishes at the spa restaurant.

Bubble tea 🧋

These were expensive five hours: $132 for the admission for both of us, and we ate/drank $58. Free parking and not far from our hometown.

Overall, a good, albeit exhausting, weekend. I don’t feel rested at all in spite of having some time at the spa. I will need to incorporate some SAT (sweet alone time) this coming week. And, next weekend we are taking it easy.

How was your weekend?

That weekend sounds expensive and lovely. I have zero interest in going to a Monster Truck Show but I have always thought that if I DID end up going for some reason, it would be a lot of fun. Looks like I was right! The spa day is more my speed, though I don’t really like the hot rooms (either dry or steam) but a hot tub is nice. I’m going to get a massage at a nearby spa this coming Friday, and they have all of these options (dry/steam/jacuzzi)…maybe I’ll sit in the hot tub a bit. It will be SAT for sure.

I feel like in the mid-2000s there were always commercials for those monster truck events and there was a truck called Gravedigger and the way the announcer said it was hysterical and sometimes my husband and I still say it to each other. There’s no point to this story other than I’ve never been to a monster truck show, but I do think I’d like to see Gravedigger in action. Ha!

HA! Gravedigger was there! He was down for a while, after an unfortunate landing. The tractor towed him backstage and he rolled out shortly after.

Minnie is VERY EXCITED to see monster trucks– none of the other kids have ever asked, so we’ll take her– it looks weird and fun. Your spa date was darling.

There is a monster truck rally at our county fair every year and we always say we’ll take the kids but we never get around to it. But it seems like it would be very entertaining. Maybe we’ll do it this year?

I love the idea of a spa day with my daughter. Only I don’t like spas. I went to one once with my girlfriend and I couldn’t relax. Something about the quiet and the water and the people touching me (we got facials)… just makes me tense.

When I was in my 20s we had a big family trip to Taiwan – cousins and aunts and everything. We went to the hot springs together (separated by sex, of course), and there was definitely a moment when I realized that we were all going to get naked together and I felt really uncomfortable for a second, and then realizing that it wasn’t such a big deal because, as you said, there are lots of bodies out there. The more you see real bodies and not just Hollywood perfect bodies, I think, the easier it is to accept your own body.

Wow what a weekend! Great experiences all round, but I can imagine you don’t feel well rested after all that! L is so cute with her barbies in the spa, my daughter would definitely brings her too. Expensive weekend but lots of memories made.
